Two mile swim!

So, bored with the mile? Looking for a new goal? How about a two miler? That's 3,600 yards if you are doing round statute miles (1,760 yards but most folks do 1,800) or if you are into the "swimming competition mile", then that's 3,300 yards.
For those of you in any other country, yards are pretty useless so a swimming "mile" is probably 3,000 meters for you or 3,200 meters if you want to be very close to the actual statute mile. :flowerforyou:
So, I swam my first two miler for 2012 this morning (3.600 yards). Unfortunately, I'm slower and less long-swim-endurance-fit than I was this time last year, but it wasn't too bad. About 1 hour 23 minutes. I wasn't going for time, of course, and I stopped now and then to adjust goggles and cap.
You don't have to share your time, but if you hit the "swim two miles straight" milestone :blushing: in 2012, post about it here!

I upped my workout about two weeks ago to two miles 3x a week. I alternate between free and breast stroke, stop twice to go to the bathroom (old age and 5 kids sucks!)...it takes me about an hour 45 min.0

You are awesome!
I sometimes have to ake loo breaks on long swims, too. We could have a whole discussion about that problem... I swam a 5k once...0 -
I swam my first 2 mile swim today. Well....actually I swam a mile and a half and then I alternated the last half mile with pulling and kicking. This took me 1 hour and 15 minutes. I think boredom made me start kicking and pulling. I'm planning on getting a waterproof MP3 player and a finger counter soon so that should help with the bordom!
Glad to see there are other swimmers here!!!

good for you...I would love to have a waterproof MP3 and a finger counter, and a heart rate monitor, but can't afford right now. That probably ok, think how long it would take me to get all wired up for my swim :laugh:0 -
Perdie
I have been dropping hints to get all of my electronics for my birthday..lol. I sometimes sing to myself but....I lose count...lol0 -
I just swam my first 2 mile today (3300 yards - it still counts ) - 1 hour 27 minutes. I was pretty happy that I was able to make it, I just did one long swim, all crawl, only 1 break for about a minute or so at the hour mark. Things began to cramp a little at the end, but nothing unusual.0

Very nice job! Congrats!0

I want to do it by the end of the month.
Right now I'm doing 60 laps 3 days a week (25yd pool). When I started last July, 10 laps was all I could do. I've just been adding more and more, and last week I went from 55 to 60 laps per workout. At the rate I've been increasing I should be able to add 11 more to make it to a full 2 miles by then.0 -

have to break my sessions in two due to needing loo breaks too.maybe a common over 50s theme?
a big increase from 500 metres 8 weeks ago.
onwards and upwards.....0 -
That is awesome!
I can't imagine doing two miles yet.
The first time I swam one mile I was so shocked I could do it, lol.
I had been working up from one measly lap last October, slowly adding 2-3 lengths every time. I was up to 40 lengths one day and thought to myself " just keep going and see how far you CAN go". Damn...was I ever chuffed when I got to one mile.
Now I just aim for one mile in freestyle and then follow that up with another hour in the deep end doing resistance exercises. I use the ankle buoyancy wraps and belt and gloves.
Rather than trying to increase my distance, I've been trying to improve my strokes and go a bit faster.
My best accomplishment was relearning how to breathe while freestyle swimming. I've always been a 'left side' only breather. I'd get water down in my ear canal if I tried to breathe to the right side. Now I just use one earplug, lol. Took me a few days of practicing but now it seems normal.0 -

Cramps...ugh! Once in awhile I get bad foot cramps and have to take a short break until it passes. Only once have I gotten a leg cramp and I had to stop...it was awful!0 -
I've done it before, takes me 90 minutes.0

repeated this feat on satuday with the majority as front crawl.
now on monday had to swim breast only as my muscles refused to lift my arms!
lesson learned hopefully.0 -
I swam a swimmers's two miles (3500 yards) in an hour and 5 minutes today.0

Hi Everyone, just joined the group! I've been swimming 2 miles as my standard swim all summer - about four times a week. I'm about 1 hour 15. No loo breaks, but I do have to pause from time to time to sort out the hat that rides up and the costume that rides down.
But that's in the 50m pool that's just closed up for the winter and now I'm having to use a 20m pool and that's an awful lot of turning around, so I think I'll switch to more technique and speed-based stuff rather than distance now.0 -
I'm from Oz and we talk kilometres so I swim 2500 metres (50 metre pool) which is 1.55 miles it takes me 70 minutes.
I'm in Tasmania which is right down the bottom of Australia and our pools are heated all year round - cause its chillier here than the rest of Oz - the ocean is often very cold even in summer.
I am pretty slow but continuous. I reckon I can swim 3000mts [1.86miles] quite easily but don't have the time most days - I'd be in the pool another 10 or so minutes.
So I plan to try this when I get faster, which I am doing very slowly.
Competition open water swims in Australia tend to be 3km (1.86 miles) and 5 kms (3.1 miles).0
