Overweight and Anti-Thyroid Medicines

Hey,
I'm new to this site (and forum). I'm overweight and I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism early last month after months of being sick. Several doctors later, I finally have a reason. I've been on Methimazole for a month --- and I feel like I gain weight no matter what I eat. My appetite has been horrible (average day: quarter of an apple for breakfast, watermelon for lunch, some strawberries in between, and for dinner -- i'll have maybe some chicken with bread).
Any suggestions on how to lose weight (especially now that my metabolism is even slower with the anti-thyroid medicine)? What's worked for you guys?

I also am hyperthyroid (Graves disease) and am also on methimizole. I gained 10 lbs on methimizole and it stayed on for most of 2011. Then in 2012 so far I have lost about 5 lbs. Its been tough and SLOW. I eat less than I used to, and more protein, and healthier, and its still super slow!! Additionally, I work out most days (6 of 7) 45 minutes to two hours. But now finally my old pants fit, even though I am 5 lbs over. I also went to a nutritionist who suggested I don't eat back all my exercise calories (she said to eat 1900 calories on the days I exercised an hour or less, and 2100 calories on the days I exercised two hours or more. Some of those days I can burn 700+ calories but she said to only eat 200 of them back. I haven't executed that plan perfectly yet -- I have been eating more of those exercise calories back than I should. I also gain and lose the same pound or two forever. Good luck to you. Add me to your friend list if you wish.0

I've pretty much lost my appetite since starting Methimazole and am not eating well at all -- I don't think I am reaching the 1200 mark every day. I have started using the Wii Fit a few times a week for 30-60 minutes, so let's see if that helps.0

There is a lot of information on-line to help you. Check out the website Stop the Thyroid Madness and google Mary Shoman.
I think you are not losing weight because you are not eating enough and your metabolism is slowing down - 1200 calories is very low.0 -
I was on the same med and could not loose weight, did not feel well. Finally had to have surgery and 1/2 of thyroid removed. I'm great now. It is very difficult to have your thyroid out of balance. I found it impossible to loose weight....between constant low anxiety, increased appetite and food seeking behavior. Take a deep breath and relax, good luck with it.0

Thank you all! It's nice to get to talk to people going through what I am. Been a roller coaster ride for sure. Hope it improves in time.0
