Using cross trainers (shoes) for C25K

I've got another mth left to get a pair of running shoes (made a pact with Yogibella to officially start on 7 May 2012). As I'm a very lazy shopper who doesn't shop often, and a budget conscious person who is only willing to purchase something when it's on sale, there is a chance I might not be able to get a pair of shoes on time.
However, I do intend to stick with the start date. Hence am wondering, is it okay to use the cross trainers I've been using for gym? So far, I've been using the cross trainers for aerobics classes, ellipitcal & walking (both on the threadmill & in parks). I will probably be using the threadmill for most (80% or more) of the C25K program but I have the intention of someday signing up for a half marathon & will be doing more outdoors training then.
What do u think?

yay for our pact!!
If your cross trainers are still in good shape, stick with 'em. Unless you have feet and alignment issues, I don't think getting special shoes is necessary for getting started. I'm sticking to my old trainers but I'm gonna be running on the trails. I don't know about treadmills though? Once we progress through the weeks, you can always buy proper running shoes:) I reckon you'll go through several pairs by the time you move on to the half-marathon stage!
Of course, if there is a good shoe sale, what's a girl to do...?? riiight? :bigsmile:0 -

The yearly Great Singapore Sale is not too far away! 25 May - 22 July 2012!
And yeah I agree with treating ourselves to a wonderful new pair of shoes when we're done with C25K - that wld be lovely motivation. oooo and if I don't end up repeating any week, it'll still be during the sale duration! :bigsmile:0 -
Many people do fine with "neutral" shoes, such as the typical cross trainers you get at the local sporting goods store. But if you start to get shin splints or other pain, consider getting fitted for proper running shoes. I thought I might not be able to finish after the first 3 weeks, but after I got good shoes I finished the program almost pain-free. Just something to keep in mind.
But I'd say give it a couple of weeks in your current shoes to see how you're doing.0 -
Mhmmm... I haven't started the program, but yesterday, I attempted Mission One of the Zombies, Run! app on the treadmill in my cross trainers and was forced to aborted the mission on the 25min mark as my foot got too painful to continue. It resembles more of an injury-type of pain than a soreness type, tts y I thought to not push it further. Am unsure if the pain is caused due to wearing the "wrong shoes", having crappy run posture on the treadmill or both. Am gonna take it outdoors to try it, hopefully sometime this week, and i guess if it happens again I should b getting proper running shoes b4 doing the C25K :grumble:
PS. I had initially thought to get the Zombies, Run! app after I complete C25K, but it was on offer the entire weekend, I couldn't resist and once I got it, I just HAD to start! lol ~ gonna b more of a zombie walk/jog thingy than anything else though0
