Question for the drivers. If any of you drive an emergency services vehicle patrol car, ambulance etc. and are on your way to an emergency call with lights and sirens on. Do you notice road users either breaking in front of you or pulling into your lane in a panic?

Or is that just in Ireland? And why??? Sorry nearly crashed today because someone did this at the last minute and pulled straight out in front of me, really annoying!

It can go either way. Here people are pretty good and pull over. You get the occasional person that won't move. People are panicky, unsure how to react, and the wrong thing. I'm also of the opinion, if you are unable to react quickly enough to changing road conditions, you shouldn't be allowed to drive.

People move for fire trucks and ambulances, but not police cars. Also, a lot of the time people pull out in front of emergency vehicles because they outrun their siren. You can outrun a typical police siren at around 60mph...which I know I go faster than that to most emergency calls. Though the more I work, the fewer calls I run code too lol.

Over the last 22 years I can't count the near misses I had when people panic. That being said, as I age I expect it now and wait for it before I make my move.

What a great career it's been!

Ditto, except for that one Dodge Diesel HD truck which came right outta the Starbucks lot while I was rolling code after a stolen car. What comes next? A nice vietnamese barber waking you up inside your smoky patrol car, and realizing that your now spaghetti arm doesnt work cause it's broken. And hearing all the fun going on with the now stopped stolen car as the medics cut your clothes off. Hmph. I'm not bitter. People do panic a bit and the police car is a LOT smaller than those glamorous engine trucks..............

By the way, Hi all! Just joined this group and a relative newbie at 30 days in.

  • We have a lot of retired drivers and holidaymakers in our area so they're just not switched on! I tend to make sure there is always some 'muppet distance' between me and the vehicle infront! One of our favourites is when the car 2 ahead has seen you, makes an effort to start pulling in, then the car right infront of you thinks that driver is pulling in to let them past! Yeah - like people pull in to let others through all the time!!??

I ride the motorbike too & they're really not prepared for that! It is nice creeping alongside the mobile phone users though! Hehe!!
