Can any of you tell me what it is like if you develop a gluten allergy? I have been reading a lot about this lately, and I am beginning to think that I may have a gluten intolerance now. Also, if you do is it considered Celiacs or is it just an allergy? Thanks!

Here's a link you can read to get started. http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/celiac/

I don't know if Gluten Intolerance behaves exactly like an allergy - but I know for me it causes bloating, constipation and other gastrointestinal distress (if you know what I mean :embarassed: ) ... I don't have celiac, but I have Hashimotos Disease and my doctor believes that gluten is not good for hashi: http://thyroid-dr.com/thyroid-disorders/gluten-and-hashimotos/

If you don't want to go through getting tested, doctor visits, etc. you could eliminate gluten for 30 days and see what happens -- if you feel better it might be worth it to you. People on Primal and Paleo diets don't eat gluten because our early ancestors didn't eat it.

    thanks for the links :)
What did you start eliminating from your diet when you first started?
I am seeing that breads and pastas are a big thing. They would be for me...bread not so much but pasta yes. Is there an alternative?

I eliminated gluten in January, 2012. I have Hashimotos and I am determined to never eat gluten again.

You can find gluten-free bread and pasta - Trader Joes has tons of gluten free foods -- but they will be a lot of calories - all carbs -- and for me, that's not a good alternative because that kind of carbs = belly fat for me!!

We don't have a trader joes here in Montana. But we do have a couple of health food stores.
Bread shouldn't be that much of an issue for me, I never really eat a lot of it anyway.
Pasta on the other hand...we use a lot of so will have to find a replacement at least for myself.

I am Hashimoto's as well, have been for 18 years. I only just started having major issues the past couple of years. I have only ever been on Levothyroxine. I am super frustrated with it all....had no idea there was so much more to it than there is....not like there isn't enough but I always thought that if they gave you the right dose of medication then you should be fine....so not the case.

Also depends if you are intolerant or allergic to all glutens or just wheat?

I just dropped wheat and have lost 3 stone and my tummy was 48" around widest part (and I'm only 5ft 3 and half), its now down to 34" and I'm just getting in UK size 12's/12-14's from size 20.

All my weight was around my middle waist also gone from 38 " to 30', its been slow progress taken me since last June to get from 12st 7 to 9st 7 but my biggest loss was when I dropped wheat the end of last august and lost 7lb in the first week and 18lb the month of september, before that I was only losing about 3lb a month!

Sept-Nov were my best months for pounds dropped then it slowed back down after xmas to just a couple of pounds a month again.

I have underactive thyroid from birth and been on thyroxine since 23 months old when they discovered mine had never started working.

I am in the process of getting tested for a gluten allergy and am waiting on my results. I've already done a lot of reading on a gluten free diet. Gluten is added to many other types of food. Reading labels will be important, and even that may not be enough to know if gluten is in the product. You may have to actually call the manufacturer to find out if it is in there. Then you've got medications, beauty products, etc. that may also contain gluten. A good starting place to look is www.celiac.org. They have lots of information on living gluten free.

In place of pasta I use Shiritaki noodles most asain grocery stores and whole foods carry them or you can order online from Miracle noodles. They are pretty good if you follow the direction and steam them in the microwave first to remove the odor. I also like to use spaghetti squash instead of noodles

Have a thyroid specialist run a test on you to see if you have celiac disease.

I have a friend who has celiac and has no symptoms at all -- he had some routine blood work done and found out he was deficient in many key nutrients and vitamins -- they started doing process of elimination diagnosis and figured out it was celiac -- if he eats wheat, nothing happens, but his body is not getting the nutrients from food -- I guess he gets fatigued, etc... but no pain or obvious distress.
