Hey Guys
There are a few reasons I am starting this thread, to facilitate further discussion, and I would love to get to know my fellow lifters! Where are you from? Why do you lift? What are your favorite lifts? Do you compete? Do you have an awesome family around?

I started power lifting at 19 years old. I had NEVER done any formal exercise before other than dance classes in high school and had never touched a weight. I have always had a stronger upper body so I enjoy the Bench Press while I have a weak lower body and lower back so both my Deadlift and Squat suffer. I don't enjoy them at all and tend to only train them because they will improve my bench and increase my overall fitness. I would be what is called a Bench Press Specialist.
My bench started at only 60lbs (I was proud I could do the bar!) and within a year was nearly 200. My first meet my max bench was about 165. It was a huge improvement for me and my first meet ever! We took time off for financial reasons but when we got back into the gym my bench reached 200lbs within about six months! For about two months I couldn't seem to get past 215 bench, but reached my own personal record of 225lbs on stage for the WABDL world record! Can you imagine how jazzed I was!!!
We had to quit lifting again, this time started my own business (food cart, Portland Oregon) and about a year and a half later here I am again! Just started back at the gym about 2 months ago is my estimate and I have nearly met my strongest point before I had to quit last time.
I love to power lift. I still hate Squatting because 200lbs raw is still too much, deadlifts are still such an uncomfortably awkward lift as well, but Bench Pressing seems so natural. I have been trying to lose weight as well, I am now below the weight I was when I made the World Record and my Bench shirt fits me so much better!
I train with my boyfriend and just got my stepdad into lifting as well. We even post some videos of our training on youtube... I will share in the future!0 -
Hi all, Not into the heavy stuff anymore..........due to my shoulders and knees crapping out on me.........but i did powerlift competitively WAY BACK in HS.....
At the time here were my stats
16 years old
147lbs body weight
165lb bench (my weakest event always)
275lb squat
380lb deadlift
That got me second place in our regional ADFPA Meet, (American Drug Free Powerlifting Association)
The only exercise i do is weight training, very seldom do i do cardio at all, I just can't move the heavy stuff on BB benches or squats anymore........which sucks.0 -
never been, nor am I aiming to be a power lifter, however, I am using stronglifts 5x5 for body composition and strength training and I could use some like minds. If I wanted/had time to mod a group I'd make one myself, but since I don't, I figured I could start here. On a start over (again) right now and currently don't have time to post my stats but I will later. 8-)0

Unsure of 1RM for bench, squat and dead lifts. Wrenched my arm last week snow boarding so I'm letting it heal and taking it light with bench. Felt pretty good doing 205# on decline for reps. Had been doing 245# for reps a month and a half prior in flat bench. Really began focusing on squats and dead lifts just this year. Squats would approx 315-365# for reps w/ decent range of motion. Could probably push it to 405# with a belt. DLs are aprrox 315# for reps depending on if I do squats before.
I've never competed. Yet. Spent a lot of time trying to gain weight and size. I'm into Strongman lifting more than power lifting but I really enjoy both.0 -
Was introduced to lifting/powerlifting in college and after. competed at 156 and 165lbs. (I think those were the classes). Best lifts were 230lbs bench/450lb squat/450lb dead. Not that great but I didn't compete that long and was never that strong. But relative for me, I got stronger. And I still do similar lifts (but not nearly as heavy anymore) today.0

Hey everyone!
New to MFP, but I've lifted on and off since high school. I am one of those weightlifting sinners that doesn't do squats so I don't have a best lift for those. I currently bench 315 lbs, and can straight barbell curl 160 lbs (for reps, I have not maxed out on this). When I was younger I was focusing a lot on my max and getting stronger, now this is just an enjoyable way for me to try and get into shape. I have been working cardio into my workouts which has slowed down my progress on heavier weight. I was using Fitocracy briefly for tracking my workouts, but the lack of a food journal on there (and my buddy's wife suggesting it) made MFP seem more appealing for what I am trying to do.0 -

Howdy:
I've been in and around powerlifting for many years. I normally judge events but I do lift in meets from time to time. My biggest focus at the moment is getting in better shape and lossing weight so my strength has suffered. However, I still enjoy lifting as much as I can. Strength is coming back some.
Currently
Bodyweight 330
6'3"
Squat 500
Bench 400
Dead 500
All these are recent raw lifetime drug free, in gym max so they will surely be lower in a meet. Last I did was in November and I did horrible. Missed depth on squat, missed two bench press due to technicality, got too far forward on deads.
I normally lift raw.
Highest bench equipped, in recent years, has been 560.0 -

Squat-405 x2
Bench 325
Deadlift 365x2.....this is my entire focul point! I am working hard on improving. Just odd that I can't seem to pull 385 from the floor but can bench 325...Ima get it!
Look forward to hearing from everyone0 -
Udail, you're still the man bro. I'm about done with the weight loss and will start bulking up with muscle now. Hope to build my strength up again.0

Just wondering, what is your current bodyweight? I can't see it on your profile. Also, what did your bench start at in the beginning? Did you try a one rep max in the very beginning?0 -

Current bodyweight is 89kg/195lb. All those max's are relatively recent except the squat, which was done at around 220lb. I maxed on bench when I started lifting proerly and managed 70kg, I guess its the one lift everyone does in some form or other even when they dont know what they are doing, hence the slower progress0 -

I like to think one day I'll be able to go to a powerlifting meet, but I said that about doing a marathon and running. Anyways, it's a far-off goal for now seeing as I'm not even back squatting yet. Doing a modified version of Starting Strength and just trying to un**** my form.0

Hi everyone! I've been training on and off for a little over 2 years with my now husband who used to compete a lot back in the Orlando area years ago. I'm hoping to do my first meet with him this June (push pull). Now that we have our home gym almost built up (squat rack coming this Thursday!) we can train even more intensely.
Currently I weigh 128 and trying to get down to 123 by early May. My current 1 rep MAX for bench is 110, obviously my weakest lift and hoping to at least top out to 120 by June. I would love to someday have a double body weight bench. Squat is around 185 and deadlift is currently 255. Goal for deadlift is 360.0 -

Hello everyone- I started powerlifting last summer (late May/early June) and have done two competitions thus far- a third one this weekend, actually. I don't have a "stand out" lift. . . They're all developing at different rates, and for different reasons (my pull was stuck due to poor technique, my bench was stuck because I wasn't training my weak muscle groups, my squat was stuck because I was always hesitant about making depth), but all in all pretty solid. I'm glad there's a group here for powerlifters- wasn't sure how much support there would be since the stigma is to usually just cut weight to get to the weight class you want to compete in.0

Hello!
I'm Amber and I started powerlifting my sophomore year of college. I just competed at USAPL Collegiate nationals in Baton Rouge, LA last Friday in the 123lb weight class. Here were my best lifts from the meet (which are pretty much my current equipped maxes)
Squat- 125kg (276lb)
Bench- 60kg (132lb)
Deadlift- 122.5kg (270lb)
Got 5th place in my weight class which I'm really happy about. Now that I'm graduating I think I'm going to stick to raw meets because they're less work and more meaningful to me. Shows me how I really stack up against the competition, not their equipment.0 -
Hi all
I've been powerlifting for about 6 months now, started with CrossFit, which got me into Olympic Lifting plus deads and frontsquats and got me started powerlifting.
I've done a couple of comps, I am in no way competative because my weight is too high for what I lift... but I am trying to recify that this year:)
My current PBs are:
Squat - 95 kgs (210lb)
Bench - 60kg (132lb)
Dead - 120kg (265lb)
for this interested my oly PBs are:
Clean & Jerk - 55kg (121lb)
Snatch - 38.5kg (85lb)
I currently weigh 180lb though... so you can see my problem I am aiming to get down a weight division for comps this year (under 72kg (160lb)), without losing my strength.0 -
Hey there! I'm super new to powerlifting, I started deadlifting a couple months ago and fell in love. I want to do more, but worried that I'm past my prime...(29 seems a little late to embark on such a journey). Any tips, advice, encouragement?? Where do I start?0
-
Rabetts-
DEFINITELY not too old to start!! I started training the powerlifts last June (was 28 at the time) and I'm rockin' hard and kickin' butt like there's no tomorrow! )
Is there anyone at your gym you can speak with about proper training/technique? I think that's definitely the best place to start as those are two BIG reasons why people get hurt, and have to pull out of the sport. Otherwise, when I first began powerlifting I purchased the Elite Fitness Training Manual (on the www.elitefts.com website) and it offered a LOT of information and guidance to make sure my programming was correct. That said, I'd still recommend having someone there to tell you if you're pulling with your back, or if you're not sitting back far enough in your squat, or whatever else, as I can't emphasize enough how important proper technique is to (1) keeping your body healthy and (2) seeing the strength gains you want. If speaking with someone at your gym isn't an option, by all means take videos of your training session and post them here. . . I'm sure there are plenty of people that'll be able to offer you tips and suggestions!!
Welcome!

Thanks for the reply! I did talk to a trainer at my gym. She told me that there's a powerlifting gym about 30 miles away, but I should stay where I'm at because I'm not fit enough to start something like that.(this seemed a little rude and greedy to me?) I looked into the powerlifting gym on the internet, and I can't afford it right now anyway. How did you get into powerlifting? Did you know someone?0

They all had to start somewhere and they didn't have the strength when they started either. Power lifting people aren't rude, they welcome beginners, thats why I wonder if that trainer you talked to ever power lifted. There is a difference, body building, body sculpting, cross fit training, Olympic lifting and power lifting are similar that they use weights but thats it. Don't let the trainer scare you away. Plus you can do power lifting in any gym unless they specifically tell you not to. Oh yeah, I'm 45 and use to do it 11 years ago I quit and now I'm starting back. There are weight classes and age groups up to 60+ years old. So if you want it go for it. Don't let anybody stop you.0 -
Rabetts, I had to laugh when you said 29 was a little too late to start powerlifting! You are definitely not too old...I started maybe a few years ago and about to turn 30 this week.
Where are you from? Look online for local powerlifters or gyms that specialize in it. If someone tells you that you are too unfit, run away from that establishment. I hate ignorant trainers that spout off things that they know nothing about.0
