So to date, I have 10 people that are eating paleo that hadn't heard about it before. They are all doing it despite their amazing love of grains - because of my results. I have never suggested, pushed or proselytized it. Matter of fact I usually tell people that it was super easy for me, but most people don't have the fortitude to go fully grain free - that tends to make them more committed.
I even got the opportunity to go through a couple girls pantry and throw out anything I wanted - they let me and only stopped me on some soy sauces.
I have 4 or 5 that are checking in with me for "coaching". I'm so excited to be able to pay this back. People have been able to see that for me, this isn't a diet - it is a lifestyle. They have seen me drop weight like a bad habit down to super lean (a size most people other than my mother haven't seen). They are seeing my tone up in muscle. Buying all new clothes (out of necessity) and then they see what I eat when we are out.
This is a fantastic feeling. Transitioning from people saying, "oh yes, I've heard Atkins is bad for you" - to "um, maybe I need to know more".

I've had a few friends asking me about it recently, a lot of my friends are doing an atkins esque diet and want to transition to paleo.
Its great you are inspiring people.0 -
I have a friend and his wife moving to Paleo...they have been doing it for a month and a half and have had some terrific results...
I have a lot of people at work ask me what i am doing (more recently because I am wearing clothes that actually fit my body instead of being loose and sloppy) - i don't say Paleo - but tell them in a nutshell I don't eat breads, pastas, processed food items - i eat meat, veggies and fruits while watching my carbs and sugars and only drink water, coffee and tea...
Most balk the fact of giving up bread and pasta....oh well...
My husband has been along for the ride with me since when we cook I usually do the meal planning and cooking. But he has been making small changes of his own...One night we had chopped Bacon, tomoato, avacado and buffalo chicken (sautee cut up chicken in some Franks Red Hot Sauce) and used some broad leaf lettuce to use as a wrap...well ever since then he has been making sandwiches using lettuce instead of bread...(still puts that nasty *kitten* Miracle Whip on it....)0 -
Mike- re the soy sauce - gift them with some Coconut Aminos...basically the same taste but Paleo friendly - anything you use soy sauce for you can use coconut aminos - we use it to marinate our jerky we make and I use it as a flavoring in stirfrys0

Awesome. I'm going to the store today to get two bottles.
See that confused me because it wasn't like kikkoman soy sauce, it just said "AMINOS" in big letters. I was thinking, Oh, this must be good - glad to see them taking their aminos. And it was all soy and they use it as flavoring. Guess I never paid attention.
No soy sauce and no teriyaki sauce has been an issue for my wife who says I tend to make things too bland.0 -
Would Braggs Aminos also be good on our way of eating? It's got such a similar taste to soy sauce, it comes in a nice spray bottle and I love using it as an ingredient in my homemade salad dressing and marinades
Mike,
I love that you're influencing people in your gentle way, leading by example, making people curious, motivating them, that's great! I think when folks let go of a lot of pre-concieved notions about food and really study this, they find it makes absolute sense. It's wonderful that your example is encouraging people towards perhaps the most healthy and easy ways to eat!0 -

Braggs Aminos are made of soybeans...I personally really, really limit exposure to soy (other than occasionally indulging in some fresh steamed edemame) and among the paleo realm soy is one of the no-no's....
You should be able to find Coconut Aminos at places like Whole Foods - I found mine at The Vitamin Shoppe (if you have those in your area - I alwasy call to check before I go since they only have a few bottles at any given time) - to me it tastes very similar to soy sauce...0 -
Really good to know, thank you! I'd never heard of coconut aminos til this post. Something new to try!0

Thanks for the post on Coconut Aminos. I've never heard of it and my husband loves to use soy sauce on alot of things. I can't wait to get some of that and try it.
I'm having a harder time converting my husband to Paleo. He'll eat my dinners but won't encorporate it at any other time. He has even told me that he misses some of the other dinners I've made. (If I can't make it Paleo we won't be having it.)
I tried making Avocado brownies and sweet potato brownies and he did not like either of them. I'll keep trying because I'm not changing. It's been great for me. I'm also hoping to see a difference in my youngest who seems to be affected greatly by sugar.
Some people have been starting to ask what I'm doing and what I eat and I think I'll just start to say that I'm staying away from grains and dairy. When I've mentioned Paleo I've gotten some wierd looks.0 -
I like MDA's explanation of all things exist along a continuum line, not in "good" or "bad" circles. Organic soybeans > GMO soybeans in terms of estrogens, etc, and gluten free > gluten, so therefore an organic gluten free soy sauce like Braggs, to me, is a much better option than La Choy (gluten free but includes corn syrup and other junk), which is better than regular ol' Kikkoman (gluten filled, probably GMO)
I think GM soybeans are some of the worst GMO's that exist! At least all the other GMOs will not give you estrogen and hormone problems. Now that I think about it, I will probably stay away from regular edamame as well from now on.0 -
Wow. You're lucky. I tell people I eat a high fat diet. I don't do grains. I tell them I'm pre-diabetic. And they proceed to try and push cake and cookies on me.
I am surrounded by obese and/or diabetic unhealthy people. When I tell them what I did they say wow, that's great and proceed to go on about their merry way, all the while *****ing about how obese and unhealthy they are.
Yet they listen to the kid who reads out of his textbook: The body will only process 25g of protein in a sitting. The rest you pee out. And they believe him.
I have given up on everyone around me. Even my diabetic brother won't listen to me - obviously this worked for me. His high carb low fat diet with plenty of cardio isn't helping him lose weight - he's come to a halt and won't drop no matter how much cardio he does - "I guess I'm just destined to be a big boy". I have told him why - I have told him what he can do - it worked for me and we are the same blood. Apparently his doctor "knows everything". And his doctor is telling him that his blood sugar dropping below 100 mg/dL is to low and to keep it above that. If it does drop then eat something sweet to bring it back up.
I think I have managed to convert some people here on MFP though. And then I have some who think I'm crazy because grains are just so healthy and important - the USDA says so!!0 -
I love influence through success. It's very validating and effortless!0

Yes, when I lost 10-15 lbs, people said, thats nice, but then tell me I will gain it all back (nice support system eh?)
Then when I kept losing and kept losing - and now am keeping it off, leaning out and getting more definition - they take notice.
While I have several people that are joining the movement - it does irritate me that I have gotten a few "manorexia" comments. When I say, "look you didn't give a crap about my health when i was 30 lbs overweight - and I haven't lost a pound of muscle, only fat", they shut up pretty quick.0
