Paleo Weight loss and no sugar

Hello,

I just joined this group and am new to the My Fit community. However, I have done a few paleo challenges. I haven't had much success with weight loss, but I joined this group to gain support and hear experiences related to weight loss and eliminating sugar. I actually don't REALLY care about losing lbs, but would like to tone my belly and lose the fat. I have been 5 days without sugar thus far. Does anyone have any experience with this? About how long did it take for you to notice changes in your body? I am a crossfitter and Bikram Yogi follower, so my exrecise is great. I just really want to tone my middle!

Looking forward to hearing your experiences!

Paleo isn't really a diet as such, calories in calories out is what counts.

How have you managed to do paleo before and not be sugar free?
  • Typically with Paleo it is not about calories. It encourages the consumption of fat and protein and vegetables.

I ate fruit in the past.

Right, Paleo isn't about calories, it's about a way of eating for health. However, as the previous poster stated, Paleo isn't about losing weight either. If you want to do that, you need to eat less calories than you burn. A side effect of eating healthy may be weight loss because you feel fuller sooner and eat less, but you still have to count calories if you want to lose weight.
  • Thank you for responding. I know handfuls of people who have lost weight with it, but perhaps it is because they had more weight to lose? I know though by not eating sugar it should eliminate excess fat. Does anyone have experience with eliminating sugar and can you speak to how you feel look?

I will say this. I have lost a lot of weight by eating Paleo. However, I also worked out 3x a week and restricted calories. That being said, by eating paleo, I didn't have any of the unpleasantries normally associated with a reduced calorie diet. I was always full by eating so many vegetables. I was satiated by the fats I could eat (within calorie limits). I never got any headaches or upset stomachs. And I was able to fast when I felt like it because I was eating so well otherwise.

It just makes the whole process easier and more enjoyable. It did for me, anyway.

I did a 30 day challenge - it didn't eliminate all sugars because that is nearly impossible...but I kept my sugars and carbs quite low during the challenge (carbs under 75 and sugars under 20) - I was also keeping check on my calories...

I know for me I can't give up all sugar but I do watch what i eat since I really enjoy berries, apples and squash - all have a decent amount of sugar - even though it is natural...so I attempt to have only one higher sugar fruit or veggie a day...

I am still watching my calorie intake and my carb intake but I gave it a little bit higher limit - most days I hover about 80-90/grams carbs - every once in a while I will go overor be way under...

Let's hear what your diet is like... As the other posters mentioned calories in vs calories burned. I would venture to guess though that if you are not toning up the way you would like, your protein intake is too low and/or your activity level too high making it impossible for you to gain or maintain muscle. For me, I begin to notice significant changes around the ten day mark of 50g carbs/day.

I've been doing paleo for a year and have lost a lot of weight. I also stayed physically active and restricted calories -- something I was never able to do when eating other macro nutrients in "moderation". The combination of fat, protein and vegetables minus all the crap I was eating before has made the difference.
  • I am managing my calories via MyFit and set a goal for myself of about 1390 cal/day. I took a look at my carb intake and it varies between 50-70g. The carbs I am consuming now are just veggies and nuts. I started this "challenge" a week from today.
