Happy Tuesday everyone!
Ballet costume crisis was averted yesterday, but that means I run today instead. I'll have to see if the weather is conducive to running outside, otherwise I'll jog some hill intervals on the treadmill.
I ate over my calories yesterday, I was just so hungry. Not sure what my problem was. I'm coming up on TOM I think, so that may play into it.
I'm still unsure what to do about my calories - whether to follow MFP and eat back exercise calories, or go the TDEE route and eat the same very day and not eat back exercise. If I go the second route, I can't decide if I'm light active or moderately active. I did the math, and light active is essentially the same as sticking with the MFP range, so it really only matters if I'm moderately active. Right now I'm jogging 3x week for 30-40 min, so I call that light, but next week I think I'll be ready to add back in the weight training 3x/week 20-30 min plus an hour of yoga a week. Does that push me over? I guess I can experiment with calories next week when I'm back up to speed. Maybe I'll post over on eat more weigh less group.
My neck seems like it's healing. Now it's just sore, instead of before where I couldn't even look down.0 -
Debbie, I thought of you and your neck issues last night. I have chronic problems do to multiple cases of whip lash and concusions over the years (not all car accidents - I'm just clumsy). Anyway, after getting rearended a couple years ago I started seeing a chiropractor on a regular basis. He helped A LOT, and eventhough I no longer go, I learned enough that I am able to "heal" my neck issues as they come up.
The ice is a very good thing - definitely keep that in the arsenal. Advil (or pretty much any ibuprofen, I would assume) is also a good thing because it works as an anti-inflamatory. Now, I don't know if you have any specific "alignment" issues, but my problem is that rather than being curved forward and up, my neck just goes up - no curve. This puts pressure on the nerves and such which creates the pain and limited range of motion. My chiropractor showed me some stretches, one of which is lying on my back on the bed with my head hanging off the edge. I let just hang naturally and try to relax everything, then gently press the bottom of my chin to get more of a backward stretch in the neck, essentially training it to curve. He also gave me a special pillow that I sleep on every night and rarely leave home without. It's basically just a very firm pillow, with a deep indention in the center for my head, so it supports my neck in that curved shape. That's what made me think of you . . . nuzzling into my special neck pillow.
I don't know if you have a regular problem, or if any of this will relate to you, but I thought I'd throw it all out there in case there was something you could use to help.0 -
Isn't the moderate 3-5 workouts per week? Seems like most people fall in that range. I would think your workouts plus keeping up with your kiddos would have to put you at least moderate! I ultimately decided on a higher calorie target plus eating back my exercise calories. I end up getting near my TDEE on exercise days but typically stay well below on rest days so there's plenty of room if I go over (which happens most of the time ).
Planning for a crazy day today. I have a dentist appointment this morning so I'm heading into work late and I've got a huge pile of work to catch up on! We have an all staff meeting today and I'm expecting they will announce they will be doing some layoffs. It was hinted at in our last meeting in March. I think my department will be fine, though. We're a new group and haven't been fully rolled out yet so I don't anticipate they will make any changes in our area. Still, never leads to warm fuzzy feelings around the office!
I'll be heading to the gym for my workout tonight, probably should have gone this morning since I have all this extra time but too late now I guess. I hope that weird trainer from last week that got all huffy when I had to interrupt her to get equipment she was blocking by training her client in the storage area isn't there. She was giving me the eyeball all last tuesday after that and it was not appreciated! I mean seriously, why would you train in the equipment storage area? Of course people will have to interrupt you! Every time I got near them after that she was glaring at me. Yeesh.0 -
Good morning all!
I just submitted grades for my students, which means that, as of right now, I am OFFICIALLY on summer vacation! Woohoo! :drinker:
Since we finally have a break in the rain, I'm hoping to get outside and get some much-needed yard work done. I have a bunch of baby veggie plants that need to go in the ground...but first I need to repair my rabbit fence (stupid workers broke it last year while replacing the trim & gutters on my house...rude).
Other than that, I'm looking forward to having more time to keep up with my fitness goals. Yay, summer!

Susan - yes! Ice and alleve is what I was doing. I'll have to try that stretch out. I feel like I should be flattered with you thinking of me while you nuzzled :smooched:
Ellie - Oh yes, I forgot to write that I hardly ever get to sit on the weekends. I'm not working out usually, but between laundry, feeding kids every 30 min (seriously, they are worse than teenagers!), and general chasing after my fearless toddler my legs ache at the end of the day! I'm confused though - I thought going that route you weren't to eat your exercise calories, unless you were netting below BMR? Which come to think of it, I didn't factor that in to my calcs last night. Hmm. Might have to post over there for sure.
Emma - wow that's early! When do you start back? i have to get my lettuce plants in soon, plus my potatoes. Everything else can wait another week or so until after last frost.0 -
Greetings from the surprisingly sunny UK. The good vibes i got from you guys about my lousy day yesterday paid off. Today was much easier to deal with. I had my annual big if i screw this up we're all fired inspection today. Managed to get through the whole thing with zero non conformances which is a big relief for me. I know the inspector and he's a good guy who above all is fair which is the main thing. Plus the one good thing about being in a meeting all day is that I feel well rested. Going to go to the gym tonight and try for a thousand calorie burn. It might be dooable if i remain focused. So how's everybody doing?0

Good morning all,
Hope everyone is doing well. Having a bit of a rough start to the week. Eating thus far has not been great and I'm looking at a challenging week with lots of activities and not a lot of time for exercise. In short, feeling a little defeated already. Gotta change that frame of mind! Everyday has a challenge in some way, it's what you do with it, right?
Cheers,
Jackie0 -
Morning everyone! (Well, just barely, but it still counts.)
So the magical "water retention/don't die of dehydration" fairy came along last night and took her 2.8lbs away with her. Now if I see another 1.2+ go away then we will be back on track. I think I have decide to definitely moving weight in to Sunday morning, so I can just skip over the Monday madness.
Yesterday we mostly rested. Took the dog on a short walk around the neighborhood which I am sure she appreciated but wanted to be longer. There is no amount of time that is long enough for her. Tonight we have our weight loss support group and gym.
Ok, I have a rant. I'll include it in a separate post.

[Rant about calories. tl;dr]
How many calories to eat is really tricky. I will say this for certain. If you believe the estimates you are getting for you BMR, no matter what you do you should never ever go below that. That is literally the bare minimum your body needs to function. It will lead to all the dreaded things like slower metabolism and muscles mass loss. Honestly, I think eating right at your BMR will also cause this to happen since you are clearly doing more than just breathing and cell repair all day. So you have to figure out where calorically you are creating a reasonable deficit that still supports your body.
I am saying all that because MFP has some seriously dangerous and irresponsible practices running around. I saw (one of our dear 30s) receive the comment that she was "Eating too many calories for weight loss because most of (the posters) friends on here were eating like 500 calories less." So here is the thing. Not everyone should be eating the same calories. Weight matters, height matters, activity level matters. MFP does a really sh*tty job of accounting for that. For example, when I feed the MFP BMR calculator my numbers and it told me my BMR was 1750. BUT when I set the site to "I would like to lose 1lb per week" it gave me 1650 daily calories. That just defies logic and good sense.
While I think Weight Watchers has it's own problems I will say this for it, you have a number of points based on how much you weigh/height/activity level and you absolutely must eat that number everyday. On WW, I rarely saw the same sort of issues we are having here. If people followed the plan then they lost weight. Pretty much every time. I just don't get the same vibe from MFP. I feel like a lot of people are working really hard and seeing nothing in return. That is very frustrating.
The worst part is you think you can't up your calories because without proper guidance it feels like you are just making random decisions about where to set it. Like you don't want to be the fat kid in the room preaching about how everyone should be eating more while you're not really losing either. God knows if I was great at figuring out what to eat and sticking to it I probably wouldn't be here complaining about it! How can I claim any expertise?
It feels so lose/lose.

Sing it SG!
I did the 1200 cal for 2 weeks before I realized that my BMR was 1412 and I SHOULD NOT eat below that. Just 10 minutes ago I posted in the eat more to weigh less group and have taken a deep breath and increased my calories to 1640, with the intention of going to 1850 next week.
Yes, I gained 25 lbs over the years, but I was doing essentially NO movement 5 days/week. Now I'm active and I should feed my body as such!
I get what you are saying about WW having a minimum, but in a sense too, the points they set are probably under BMR for many people. So it has its own inherent problems. But I agree on the MFP BMR thing - I was pissed that it didn't falg ti for me, I had no idea when I first started and set my goals. There are a few dedicated people here on MFP that are spreading the word and making the difference for many folks.
It's just unfortunate that people who should be showing SUPPORT tells somebody they are eating too much - without regard to that person's details or goals! Particularly if that person has taken a good approach to setting their calories. Yikes.0 -
I have a good day today - I've eaten three good meals, done some good exercise, and I'm still 300 calories under before even thinking about adding back exercise calories. I also bought a second-hand mountain bike today - an absolute bargain - but it's been 25 years since I've ridden a bike so I'm taking it slowly!
I don't believe in "one size fits all" diets, no two individuals should eat exactly the same, or hope to achieve identical weight-loss if they did. Even assuming they were the same height, same weight and did the same activity, each metabolism would work differently and therefore, the results would be different. I agree that no-one should eat under their BMI, and that for some people - especially those who are very active - eating a good bit more ensures the best weight loss. But for everyone,it's a balancing act and it takes time and effort to achieve optimum results.
It isn't all about how much either - 300 calories worth of chocolate will not keep the body satisfied for long, 300 calories worth of salad is probably enough for the whole day!! Just saying.0 -
Emma - wow that's early! When do you start back? i have to get my lettuce plants in soon, plus my potatoes. Everything else can wait another week or so until after last frost.
Classes start up again August 27. I LOVE the semester system. When I was in grad school we were on quarters and it felt like the academic year lasted FOREVER (not that I got summers off - I was still doing research - but still); semesters are by far superior.
I just finished with all the gardening work I think I'm going to get done today: turned over the soil in my garden (12ft x 5ft raised bed) and mixed in some veggie fertilizer, then put together a new drip irrigation kit...hopefully that works better than the POS soaker hose I used last year. I still need to fix my rabbit fence before I put my plants out, but we're done with frost here so I'll probably get my tomatoes, sweet peppers, hot peppers, cucumbers, butternut & zucchini squash, and corn (we'll see how that works, first time I'm trying it) later this week. Also putting in onions, carrots, and lots of herbs (Italian basil, Thai basil, oregano, chives, tarragon, dill) and flowers (marigolds, petunias, chamomile, and maybe some others). I cannot wait to start getting fresh veggies to eat!
Past that, I'm enjoying reading through everyone's posts - it's nice to be part of a group where people seem to be rational I mean, I enjoy reading through the general forums and rolling my eyes at the ridiculousness as much as the next person, but it's also good to know that other people on here routinely net more than 1200 calories/day.

I see a lot of very interesting points being made today and very well made too. When i started on MFP i was eating about 1300 calories a day. i assumed naturally that i would lose weight faster. But i felt strange, my legs would feel strange when i'd walk home from work, numb or like i had a cramp. The feeling would only go away after i ate something. As time has gone on my calorie intake has crept up to around the 1700 mark. I feel better, stronger and i'm able to work harder in the gym. Shortly i'll be moving to what i've knicknamed phase 2. To add some muscle to my frame. I'm going to have to up my calorie intake to aroud 2000 a day at the very least. This scares me a little and goes against everything that i've been doing. I know that's illogical to think that way but i can't help myself.0
-
Emma, I agree with you about the logical conversations happening here and am so glad I joined this group!
I am becoming a believer in the eating your BMR calories thing. A few months ago I was eating around 1400 calories a day, running and strength training, but only lost about ten pounds in the months. I know some of the slowness of it was due to gaining muscle mass but I was not losing inches in my waist very fast. I am in the Air National Guard and had to take a fitness test last February, but failed it because my waist measurement was too high. I was doing everything I could to pass that test and I went into it pretty confident. My trainer wanted me to eat so much protein that it would blow my calories for the day so I counted the calories instead of eating what I needed. Now I've decided to follow the South Beach Diet to help cut processed foods and sugars from my diet. I like that SBD doesn't focus on counting calories or other numbers, instead it focuses on eating well balanced meals and snacks free of refined sugars and carbs. In three weeks my sugar cravings have gone away. The second week of phase 1 I didn't eat all of my snacks and one lunch due to being busy and I only lost one pound. I really think it's because I ate less than 1200 calories on those days, and I was very cranky on those days. (bless my husband for not getting mad at me) Now that I'm eating fruit and whole grains again I feel so much better!0 -
Good point SG. Its not one size fits all. I know exactly what you are talking about.0

You're not, but I had to adjust it to something that works for me. Thing is I will typically always go over my calories by about 200 regardless of what I set my goal to. Because of that it pretty much works out that I'm eating my tdee-15% on non-workout days and I always ensure I net above BMR on workout days but also typically end up close to TDEE. Its really just a silly of way of tricking myself into eating the right amount of calories without going over.0 -
Locked my keys in my car today. And didn't realize it until everyone was gone from the office but me! Luckily the doc I work with has a hubby that unlocks cars for people and he came to my rescue while my boyfriend picked up my son from after school. But while waiting from my locksmith to get there, I ate. I ate twizzlers, beef jerky, pita chips, laffy taffy. Good grief, I couldn't stop! This is probably my TOM peaking it's ugly head along with stress, but good grief! I thought I had developed some kind of mechanisms to help me avoid emotional eating! Just shows me that I am not above it, and still have a lot of work to do on myself emotionally. Thanks for providing a place to vent.0

Busy day around here! Everyone is so right on about different diets working for different people.
Sara Grace, I hear you on the somewhat irresponsible thing but I suppose on the flip side they have to just give healthy guidelines and let people make their own choices. I have to admit I actually started with MFP in Feb 2011 but I had to delete my account because I had accumulated too many of those not eating enough friends and it was actually starting to have a negative impact on my attitude towards food. I felt guilty about closing out my diary if I was over calories and even if I had "a lot" of calories due to exercise I felt like I had eaten too much-and by a lot I mean netting 1200-1300 but maybe consuming around 1800 total. I got to a place where I was exercising just to eat and ended up binging at least once a week because I was so hungry. Fortunately I had an aha moment back in Jan and joined back up with the intent to go at this the right way with other people doing it the right way. I did spend a brief amount of time on another site and they actually had theirs set so that if you ate less than 1200 you diary would not show up in the news feed, its not much but that was at least something (I didn't like the site as much as this one either).0
