Am I going too fast and too furious.

LOL. Okay, been back in the gym for 4 months after being out of PL for 11 years. I'm impatient and don't want to take for ever to get back where I was before except this time I'm eating better. I'm doing a lot of lockouts, negatives and starting on some chain work later. Things that take a toll on your joints, tendons and connective tissues. Am I rushing things a bit or okay to go 100% all out with my training. The fire has been lit and I don't want it to go out. Any input would be helpful. I'm 45 years old also not hat it has a lot to do with it because I've seen guys older than me still hittin the weights hard in PL.

    4 months is definitely long enough to be doing rack lockouts, training with bands, chains and whatnot. Go get it! If you're worried about the joints, take some good joint supps and make sure you listen to your body. Sometimes it really might be best to wait a week if your elbows hurt from squats...

    Really, just pay attention. Maybe you should do some GOOD stretching sessions or go to a yoga class once a week to help you pay more attention to how your muscles actually "feel". I know I thought yoga was funny, but when I do go I really can feel what muscles need special care that week.

    45 isn't too old to lift heavy!

    EDIT: Make sure that during all this you have some good training partners to spot and lift off for you. If you have to lift off yourself, you are putting yourself into bad positions!

    This time around be smarter. Take your breaks. Listen to your body and feed the beast.
    If you are smart I think you can be fine..........Just gotta be smart. Its a marathon not a spring..I know I know. Cliche
    Your going back to what you know. Maybe that changes soon after you realize it doesn't satisfy you as much. Or maybe you realize you love it more then ever.

    Do what makes you happy. Just do it smart

    yes! listen to your body. recovery and inventory is just as important as training!

    yoga is fine if you stay relaxed - don't push for range of motion, go just for the muscle awareness and breathing!

    Just know when you need to back off. If you're feeling beat up, rest.

    I've got to ask, why the negatives? I know you said you haven't been PLing for 10 years, so maybe things were different back then, but from everything I read now, negatives aren't a part of powerlifting training anymore.
    While the eccentric portion of the lift will lead to tissue damage and hypertrophy, it's also making you sore, slowing recovery, and not really benefitting the goal of strength.

    You know my joints actually feel better after I have been working out heavy for awhile. I like the comments of listen to your body. That is the best advice there is.

    I still like the keep it simple approach. Heavy weights and low reps. Also, if you are truely just going for powerlifting increases, I say dont do a lot of extra stuff. But thats just me.

    Lol, I do so much extra stuff I wonder when I'm going to get back into powerlifting shape. Hopefully this year. I am thinking about doing a 6x6 routine to see how I react to it.

    Its funny 12 years ago I was benching twice a week 5x5 one workout and low reps the next and never had joint problems. Now I'm going once a week on the bench and taking fish oil pills and Osteo bi-flex everyday. Knees are better but shoulders are a problem area. Incline bench is at 330 lbs. and flat is at 365, its so close because the incline for some reason doesn't hurt my shoulders. So after 12 years off from lifting my flat went from 505 lbs down to 270 and in 5 months back up to 365. Incline from 405 down to 225 and 5 months back up to 330. So I know I'm making positive gains. All are raw lifts also, I may start using that Titan Ram thing for a while on the flat to see if I can work around the joint problem. I really want to compete this fall in a full meet I just don't want to go and embarrass myself.

    I think the Ram will definitely help take some stress off of your shoulders and allow you to keep training.


    Just compete man. Don't worry about feeling embarassed, from my experience, everyone at the meet is on your side. I wanted to see every person at my meet do well and was behind them. I had one of the lowest adult totals (930) at the meet, but still had a great time and wasn't embarassed.
