I set mine at 25%. For me, that's 75 grams per day or about 30-35 net carbs. Seems to be working well for me - lots of energy, nice weight loss and my BG is in the normal range (under 100) about 97% of the times i test.

I have been upping my carbs and am more at 50 to 70 net per day. In the morning I usually have a protein, 1/2 c greek yog and a serving of fruit. If I don't eat that many carbs I'll die before my workout is done. Sometimes I have a piece of toast instead of fruit.

Some people adapt fine to not having hardly any carbs and doing lots of exercise. I found an article written by a dr. who did a study on it and he found that long distance bikers could adapt. I never could. I went about 2 months eating 2 or 3 carbs for breakfast and pretty soon, I couldn't work out anymore. I do much better now.

You need to experiment until you find how much you need to fuel your workouts. If you are petering out then try a little more carbs until you find the magic number.

My total is usually between 160-200 a day depending on my activity level.I don't think you should restrict them too much. In the begining I was cutting out as much as possible which is probably why I am going bald now so I have found a balance I think everyone is different. You have to see what you can manage depending on your blood readings and your energy.

My doctor told me I can have 45 gm per meal and I can easily stick to that number. I do try to keep below it, though. My energy levels are fine.

It sounds like there is a big range here, from 45g/meal to 45g/day! What do your macros look like? If you're getting 45 g/day, how much protein and fat are you getting? What percentages are each?

I try to keep my total carb intake below 100 per day. I can get away with more, but I find it pretty easy to keep right around 100 and still have plenty of energy.

Definitely watching my carb intake is crucial. Less than 100 g per day...45g at one meal MAX. 80% of my carbs come from veggies. I allow myself 1 cup of strawberries and a few small servings of yogurt per day. Some flax crackers and a very small serving of homemade nuts and bolts are my only grains...very small servings...keeping snacks generally beolw 20g each.

I am generally pretty diligent with this.

My endo didnt want me cutting them completely out, but for me, suggested to try and stay below 60 per main meal.

I know someone who is following the 20/50/30 carb/fat/protein model in the article. He's lost 90 pounds, is off all meds and now has an amazing lipid panel. I spent so long considering fat 'evil" that it's been hard for me to increase my fat to that level

I do 35%carb/35%protein/30%fat at 1200-1400 calories/day. I'm 57, over 200 lbs and have had hard time losing. This formula plus a lotta walking/swimming/circuit training is working for me. I have enough energy for the exercise. I normally don't get hungry. If I cheat, it is stress not hunger.

I gave up bread, rice, pasta and eat them only occasionally. I try to avoid wheat, but some of my fav protein bars (my candy) have a little wheat and I'm NOT giving up my 'candy'.

I'm pretty careful to get GOOD fats....nuts, flax, avocado, etc vs bad fats. However, of course, I do slip sometimes....

That's what my macros have been looking like the last couple of weeks. No, wait, 30/50/20. Or maybe 30/45/25-ish. I'm hoping to go to a CDE/nutritionist in the next couple of weeks, so I'm interested to see what her recommendation is.

I can see how sugar would improve but what are the long term effects of a high fat diet?? I'm going to check this site out thanks.

After reading the article it is not convincing. There are too many variables there if they are eating food labeled low fat they are usually higher in calories and sometimes sugar. The high fat diet sounds like it was probably very focused on good fats which are restricted to specific foods. The study is not very old and they won't know the long term effects. Like atkins seemed like a great idea too. Doesn't seem like something I would want to try. There should always be some balance.

FATS do not include ALL fat. Good fats only.....nuts, seeds, olives, avocado, olive oil, flax seeds, flax oil. Do some research on good fats...don't buy a bunch of bacon! lol

    Hi T2s,
I' m new to this group. I've been off an on the pre-diabetic fence for years and pending a follow up blood test, I'll probably land on the diabetic side on Monday.
I saw a nutritionist a year or so ago and was put on a 1200 calorie, maximum 80 grams of carbs daily regime. I lost a lot of weight for the first two weeks, then less and less. Just recently the PA at my docs office said that I should lower protein to no more than 80 grams (60-80) which is a huge change from what I had -- and resulted in 25% carbs,25% protein, 50% fat -which even she said makes no sense. Her suggestion is to divide my plate in half, half 3/4veggies an 1/4 fruit; the other half is 50-50 split whole grain and protein. That may be fine for some, but visual is too subjective for me.
I've looked at some posts with varying opinions about where good fats should fall in the spectrum.
I'm looking for something simple and measurable. What's worked for you?
    Sorry to be so long!
