Not Hungry

Hi All -
I have a question for those of you who've been eating primally for a while. I've been at it for about 2 months now, and everything is going well, except I get in these slumps where I am literally just NOT hungry. I don't want to put any food in my mouth, in fact, the thought of it makes me nauseaous sometimes. Yesterday, I choked down 1100 calories, then woke up hungry today and thought that today would be a "eat all your calories" type of day....Now here it is, 9:45, and I've only had 950 calories or so...and nothing sounds good. Minus my exercise, and I've netted something like 650 calories for the day.....argh.
I don't want to stall my weight loss by not eating as much as I "should" but I also want to listen to my body when it's sending me hunger signals.
So, is this a primal side effect, or what the heck is going on? I can literally say I have NEVER IN MY LIFE NOT been hungry on a regular basis like I am lately.

I am experiencing the same thing. I think I am going to listen to my body. I don't know what the correct answer is though.

I've noticed that I don't have to eat as much to feel satisfied, especially on days where I'm not getting a lot of exercise. That may have something to do with it. Also, intermittent fasting really works well for me when I'm in the right conditions (I don't like to fast much when I'm busy/physically active during the day 'cause I don't want to risk being sluggish). Have you tried that at all?

I've only been on the Paleo bandwagon for a week, but it's now after 9am for me and I haven't even gotten hungry...previously, I'd eat breakfast at home, and oatmeal again as soon as I got to work at 8am. I'm just going to listen to my body, and have a bite to eat when I next feel hungry. It is SO nice not to be starving every 2 or 3 hours!

Yep - I have switched up my snacks to be higher fat/calorie ones - I KNOW my body needs the fuel - especially on workout days...so lately I have been eating things like a serving of nuts with a few squares of dark chocolate, guacamole with veggies...things that pack a lot of punch...

I have found it is a fine line - because if I go too long then all of a sudden I will be ravenous

Yes, I totally IF, without even meaning to...for example today, woke up not hungry (even after only having 950 calories yesterday ?!?!?!?) and am now just eating my first meal at 11 AM.
Twinmom01 - Good idea with the higher calorie snacks....I think I've sort of ODed on nuts the first month or so, but avocado sounds good... :D

Wow this whole thread makes me feel so much better! I haven't eaten 1200 calories a day in over a week, because I'm just not hungry. I worry about those threats of my metabolism slowing down though. Does anyone know if there really is a safe minimum to eat or should I just listen to my body?

Maybe your body is fighting off an illness (even if you're asymptomatic), in which case it needs to keep the liver freed up to do its job as efficiently as possible. Maybe it's doing something else. Who knows? A few days/a week/ 2 weeks of low calories or fasting won't hurt and is even beneficial. Just be sure to drink a lot of water.

Generally I try listen to my body. Some days I'm not really hungry, some days I'm more hungry than usual. I find it all averages it out just fine for the week. Who says you have to eat the same amount each day?

Learning to listen to my body has been one of the best side effects of Paleo/Primal. I was never a breakfast eater, but thought I "should" because "they" said it was critical. Learning about intermittent fasting & actually reading the studies gave me the reassurance that it's okay to eat when *I* want to eat. That means I fast from about 8PM - 1PM every day and I feel really good. But if for some reason I am hungry at breakfast, then I eat.

FWIW, I've lost weight consistently despite calorie highs and lows.

I started like this. It could be a sign you are in Ketosis, appetite usually drops a bit then.

I had this same issue when I first started. I honestly think it is due in part to an adjustment period- because it will start to pass. However- I started doing things like putting coconut oil in my tea (high calorie and fat- WONDERFUL for you), eating nuts as my snacks (180 cals in a 1/4 of walnuts)- choosing steak over fish if I was low on cals etc. Especially on work out days. The coconut oil definitely helps though. If you aren't hungry, but a cup of tea sounds good, then this will help get your cals up without "filling you up" or forcing you to eat when you're not hungry.

Additionally, you can perform your own IF (intermittent fasting) if you feel comfortable- for however long or short of a period you would like. I recommend researching it a bit if you haven't before, but I usually take my bodies cues as a sign now. That being said- if I haven't eaten much for that day, and I'm not hungry- I don't usually work out. I'll let me body rest a bit.
