Ok, just started is not accurate. I'm on my 60thish day. My first 30 was at .025 and then I got retested only to find that my levels went down. My "new" doctor (old one up and moved) doubled my script. and retested. still went down but hardly enough to count... "her words".
Everyone in my family is HYPO and all but two of us are severly overweight.
My brother was saying he heard synthroid masked hypo and really didn't help. Have you heard that???
I've gained weight the past two months. But honestly can't blame meds.. I had horrible eating habits. Now I'm focused and curious to see if on a weight loss diet path if I can lose this bulge.
How are ya'lll doing???

Hi Lizz,
Welcome :flowerforyou:
I started taking synthroid 6 weeks ago too. My dr. lowered my dose at the one month check-up. He had started me out on 75 mg. It got my THS level to the proper range, but it was giving me hyper symptoms.
I have lost 35 lbs. Most of that before I found out I had hypothyroidism, but it is still continuing to go, slower now, because its the last 10 lbs. So its very possible!! I do think you have to be totally committed to diet and exercise to succeed. Its harder, so if you mess up, it will take twice as long to recover from the mess up... and that can be so discouraging.
I have learned so much reading this site. Apparently calcium is bad for your meds, so I take mine at midnight, so I don't have to change what I eat for breakfast. Do you avoid calcium when you take your pill?
Also there are several vege's that are bad for us; gluten-free diet is better, and virgin coconut oil is good for us too. As well as some good supplements.
I don't know about what you heard about synthroid masking hypo. But several people here like the Armour / natural thyroid. Terry is really good with that, & will help you a lot with her knowledge.
Anyway, hope you have success losing that bulge. It feels so much better!!0 -
The reason to think that Synthroid masks hypo is because Synthroid increases your T4 levels and decreases your TSH. Since most doctors only test TSH, it looks like you are "normal". But they rarely test other levels that are critical to a healthy metabolism - such as T3 -- if your body isn't converting T4 to T3, then you are still very hypo. They also don't typically test Ferritin/Iron, Adrenals, Reverse T3, etc.
So, you can be very hypo and doctor will tell you you are normal - or worse, lower your meds because your TSH is low.

I'm on synthroid myself, matter of factly I'm on a generic version Levothyroxine, .50 mcg, and it doesn't effect my weight loss. I effect it when I have poor eating habits that week.0

Thank you Terri for the info. I'm trying to learn.0

Did not know some veggies weren't so good. Which ones? I take my pill about 3 or 4 in the morning. Then I get up and eat breakfast around 7ish. No milk in my food, but I do make me a mean latte.0

That's good!
I went back & found another person's post & borrowed it (its from an article it mentions the vege's)
Natural Treatments for Hypothyroidism
There are steps that you can take to make your condition manageable at home. Try some of these suggestions to help you cope more effectively:
Surround yourself with a good support system
Educate yourself on your condition
Involve doctors, homeopaths, naturopaths, specialists, therapists, family, friends etc in the management of your condition
Try to maintain a positive ‘can-do’ attitude
Eat a healthy well-balanced diet
Include lots of salt water fish, shellfish and sea weed in your diet as these are rich in iodine – essential for healthy thyroid functioning
Avoid cruciferous vegetables (cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale) as these contain a natural thyroid blocker
Try to do regular physical activity or exercise
Take and adjust your medications as necessary
Have your hormone levels monitored on a regular basis
Perform a daily thyroid self-massage. To massage the thyroid gland; gently stroke up and down the sides of the trachea (also known as windpipe).
The coffee reduction is from another article..0 -
Been reading up on adrenals - and it is recommended to eliminate caffeine because it if you have hypothyroidism, it is thought that caffeine overstimulates your adrenals -- and your adrenals are already working overtime trying to take up the slack in your metabolism that your thyroid disease is causing.
Also - on cruciferous veggies -- they are perfectly ok to eat as long as they are cooked. Just don't eat them raw.
