Good morning! So I saw a clip on the news this morning that some libraries are banning these books for being "too hot and racy". I haven't read them yet but I don't believe that any book should be banned from a public library... has anyone in here read them? Opinions?

Never read them either, but I agree--no book should be banned. If anything, put a rating system on it like they do movies, if they're that worried about kids reading it (that's the only reason I can logically think of for them banning it). We adults have this lovely thing called choice--we can CHOOSE to read it or NOT to read it.0

That's BS. I've read all 3 and it's erotic literature. If they think that's bad, read Ann Rice's Beauty series. C'mon. They will be banning everything if they start with those books. Just my opinion.0

I just bought it over the weekend. Our library has rated R movies. You have to be "of age" to borrow them though. Why can't they do the same thing for books? I think banning a book is too far.0

I've finished the first 2 books and am enjoying the 3rd. yes its erotica and not for the young but banning from a public libary is going too far. i've seen so much media coverage on them. Dr. Oz did a show with 3 professionals- a gyn, sex thearpist, and pshchologist. It seemed to me his entire audiance was all for these books. You do know they are making a movie based on the series??? I can't wait to see who they pick for the roles of Ana and Christian.

I hadn't heard that they were going to make a movie... should be interesting based on what I've heard.0 -

I started 50 Shades of Grey Sunday evening, I did not sleep and only stopped reading because I had to get ready to go to work Monday morning. My Kindle says that I am 37% done the third and final book and all I can say, is WOWZA!! I cannot get enough. I can't believe anyone is banning it. Whatever happened to the right to chose. I can get behind an age limit for being able to purchase/rent, but c'mon, banning it may be going too far.0

I JUST heard of these books. Literally a couple of women in my office started talking about it at the same time I noticed the thread! I will be downloading these ASAP!0

You might just want to download the first one to see if you like it first.
I thought it was one of the worst books I've ever read. Not because of the subject matter, but it was so poorly written. :indifferent:0 -
I have the first one but haven't read it yet. But I agree they should NOT be banned from a "public" library!!! No way!0

According to library policy, "materials are selected to serve the broad, general interest ranges" of their patrons.
Banning these books is only being considered by a few libraries. Perhaps the patrons at those libraries are mostly children and teens so it doesn't make sense for those particular libraries to take up shelf space with that genre.
If someone wanted to read them, they could probably find them in another branch.0 -
I just finished reading the third book and I agree that the book should not be banned. Maybe they should put an age limit on who can check them out but take them out of the public library all together is going a little far in my opinion.0

I'm a HUGE 50 Shades Lover I have read them twice! Taken a break right now, reading another story that was rec'd by followers of 50 Shades, and will probably reread again after I finish that... CANNOT WAIT FOR THE MOVIE....0

Personally, I read all 3 50 Shades and although they are spicy, I really enjoyed the storyline. Watching Christian learn how to interact with Ana and seeing Ana discover her "tastes" was very engrossing. There is so much more to this series than the "mommy porn" label it has been given. My opinion only0

i read all 3 and i don't agree that they should be banned. they are really not that bad. my library is one of the ones that is allowing it, but the waiting list is HUGE...so i went out and bought my own copies....and after reading them i am so glad i did. i have just let my cousin borrow them, and she is loving them, she just finished the 1st one yesterday and as soon as she was done she texted me to see if she could drop by to borrow the 2nd one,lol0
