Naked Yoga-another question

I realized the naked yoga comments on the "Looking for gay male MFP weightloss pals" were veering off topic but I have another question...so I thought I'd ask here instead of taking up space there. Is naked yoga primarily a gay male thing or do heterosexuals and women do it too? as I said before I can't imagine myself there..

This place is apparently on hiatus. Interesting pictures and discussion of why naked yoga.

It's was in West Hollywood, so not surprisingly it was mostly for gay men. The FAQs do say "Straight and curious men are welcome at Naked Yoga Los Angeles. However do be aware that all classes may include some physical touching by other men. If your comfort level with male touch is minimal, please do NOT sign up for Partner classes as these may include intimate and sensuous contact."

The partnering sections says, "Partnering is one of the joys of Naked Yoga and homosensuality."

Just going from the website, it sounds like it was typical West Hollywood "only beautiful people need apply." They don't want people with BMI over 27 . . . unless they are body builders, for whom they make a special exception!

In Vancouver I go to classes twice a week. Mostly gay men but we have had straight men participate. The link above will give some more info to those who want it. We also have all shapes and sizes. I started going when I weighed 205 lbs, my BMI at the time was around 27, but there were other guys bigger than me who there. The West Hollywood place sounds a bit pretentious.

I love the fact they mention they do not support discrimination, yet it's blatantly obvious they are body fascists and only want physically fit members.:noway: I'm sure there are a lot of folks, myself included, who are quite fit and would love to try yoga, but as my BMI is still way above 27 then that would rule me out

I like the idea of http://www.skycladyoga.com/ better. There are similar classes in London, but I'd like to go with Jem and only wish there was something closer to home.

I fart constantly during yoga... so naked yoga in a crowded room is probably not something I should do.

Although, maybe I will because the whole thing sounds ridiculous and gross to me anyway. Why not bring a little irony to the situation?

Typical Weho - I am so glad I am far away from there. It's not that there aren't a lot of similar people here in the Bay Area it's just that the community here is so much bigger and more diverse that it allows for a tremendous range that you don't see in Weho. To me, Weho for the most part embodies nearly every negative stereotype about gay men : superficial, materialistic, *****y, mean, shallow, sex-centric, the list goes on.

Of course there are exceptions. I do know a number of them personally.

I have never heard of naked yoga, but maybe I am just living under a rock. ;0

There's a studio in Atlanta that has a naked yoga class for men and its taught by a straight dude with a mix of queer/straight students. I would maaaaybe do it if there was a female class. That's one life experience not everyone would have lol.

Oh, I've definitely done naked yoga at home. Can't say I've done it in a group situation.

Oh, I've just never really had the opportunity. I'm not opposed to the idea at all.

I meant why have you done it at home??? it seems it would be uncomfortable, then again, why do it in a group? something skimpy yet supportive makes sense but, well .. one of my original posts comes into play

No, it's not a problem at all doing yoga au naturale. Not as though you're doing jumping jacks. That would be a completely different situation. :)

Thanks, if we ever do make it to BC we'll take you up on that offer. I've a cousin that lives outside of Vancouver (although she also spends half the year now in Nova Scotia) and I've always fancied a visit. Was actually hoping to go this year, but other things got in the way! :ohwell:
