Fat and Cholesterol

I'm sure this has been asked a thousand times so I'm sorry for the repeat....
Do we really not need to worry about fat and cholesterol? I'm usually WAY over on both but no higher than 79g of Carbs on a typical day. Can someone explain this to me in laymans terms, please?

I'd like to know this because I am ALWAYS over in fat and under in protein. i don't know what the ratios should be. i don't pay attention to cholesterol.0

I'm normally pretty good on my protien most days. Today wasn't super great though. Even on days where I eat a ton of protien I still can't help to be freaked out by my fat/cholesterol intake:)0

When you say "over"... How do you determine that? Trying to set ratios will drive you crazy.
Make sure you are getting about 1g of protein for each lb of lbm.
Keep your carbs under 100-ish or lower (play with way works)
I ignored fat and actually did much better when I went out of my way to include extra fat.
Dietary cholesterol... What about that bothers you?
I found having high dietary cholesterol lowered my bad cholesterol and increased my good cholesterol.. Most people that measure their blood lipids after a few months on paleo, end up with much better numbers.0 -
I went in and reset my macros so it better fit the way i eat...
So my protien is set at about 115, Carbs at 85 and fat at 75 (with 15 from Saturated)
If you are using the basic template MFP gives you it can appear to be really skewed....
I worry about carbs first - i.e. trying to keep it under that 85, but will balloon up to 100 depending on the day (i.e. usually on workout days) - then I do my best to get a fair amount of protien sources in - especially on strength training days and I usually don't worry about fat as it pretty much shakes itself out...and the vast majority of my daily fat sources are from olive oil, coconut oil and avocados
Like Mike - eating the Primal/Paleo way my blood markers had an improvement - my overall cholesterol went down and my HDL went way up....my LDL is over 100 but my Dr. thinks I probably have a higher ratio of the big fluffy LDL vs the bad small LDL (in a few months we are going to do another blood panel and he is going to have them check on the ratios)
for blood Cholesterol - it is actually made by your body...so if your body is working correctly then the more cholesterol you eat the less your body will make to even things out. However, one may have high cholesterol that is genetic in nature...My husband has a family history of high cholesterol so he does have to watch his intake a bit - his Dr. wants to put him on medication (have you read some of the side effects of those type of medications) but my husband refuses because the rest of his blood work - the HDL and LDL levels - are good and since he has always had higher than normal cholesterol levels it is simply how his body functions...0 -
IME, an ideal day consists of my calories naturally distributed like this:
25% from Protein
25% from Carbs
50% from Fat
and I've found that many (most??) others following Paleo have that same breakdown.
HTH!
edited to add: I don't pay any attention to cholesterol - eating high cholesterol healthy foods (like eggs) does NOT increase your blood cholesterol.0 -
Thank you guys!
I guess I just have been freaking out about it b/c I guess everyone else (ie, non primal/paleo peeps) says you should. Haha. This is only my first full week doing primal so I'm still getting used to it all:)
I really am focusing on my carb intake first and foremost. I think in the last week, the highest it was was 85g. Throughout the day, I'll check my daily whatever to see where I'm at and it's just hard to ignore the red #'s for fat and cholesterol:) My cholesterol is coming from eggs so that makes me feel better!0 -

For me it was really weird at first to eat a lot of fatty meats, eggs, etc. and still tell myself it's healthy and okay. Now my mindset has completely changed. You'll get used to it!0 -

I'm guessing you're probably right:)0 -
It took me a long time to adjust my thinking. Now when I have bacon and eggs I actually drain the bacon fat out of the pan and onto my plate then I top everything off with big dollops of fresh salsa. With the runny eggs and salsa and bacon fat -- it is quite a runny plate so I just spoon everything up off the plate (or if no one is looking - I even lick the plate). I don't have a huge appetite for fat so I often skim the fat off my bone broth -- but I used to be a fanatic about removing every last little bit and now I leave a generous amount in the bone broth.
One wonderful thing that I have come to enjoy again since embracing the Paleo lifestyle is eating the crispy skin off of a freshly roasted chicken ---- oooh I love the days when I roast a chicken. And I've actually let pork rinds back into my life -- I sometimes pulverize them and use them as a "breading" for oven baked chicken legs or breaded zucchini slices.0 -

I've never thought about using pork rinds as a substitute for bread crumbs. My Gosh, you're a genius :drinker: What kind of pork rinds do you purchase? I have wanted to get pork rinds for when I really want something crunchy like potato chips, but all the ones I've ever seen have tons of added ingredients.0 -

We have these where I live - http://carolinasnacks.com/ - don't know if they only ship to certain areas. I e-mailed them because it didn't say what they were fried in...found out pure lard - and nothing else but pork and various spices0 -
Pork rinds as breading is genius! haha0
