I walk at a pretty brisk pace for a couple of minutes, that usually helps. I got a bad one 20 minutes into my run the other day, walked for 4 minutes and was able to complete the last 30 minute run without problems. Being properly hydrated is also really important, muscles often cramp when they aren't hydrated... Or when you are digesting a significant amount of food

Drink a lot of water during the day before you run. For muscle cramps or spasms, potassium is also a big help, so make friends with bananas.

As far as side stitches go, they have more to do with breathing. You need to inhale deeply to get enough oxygen in your system, and exhale deeply to release all that carbon dioxide your body is producing. Try focusing more on your breathing while running and you might be able to solve this problem.
