Do you go by time or distance?

I just completed Day 1 of Week 3 of the C 2 5K program. I use Ullrey's free Podcast through iTunes and it goes by time. I do it on my treadmill at a speed of 3.5 for the brisk walk and 4.5 for the running because he said you should be able to talk while you run. (Note: this is not the pace per mile) I am wondering how I will be able to ACTUALLY RUN a 5k at the end of the program. Isn't this just training me to be able to run for 30 minutes continuously? What if I can only get 2k in 30 minutes?

I use the app RunDouble and you can chose to go by time or distance. Right now I'm focusing on time, but according to my app I have been averaging about 9:45 per mile during my intervals which would put me on track to run 3 miles in 30 mins. I figured if I could run for 30 mins, then I will worry about the speed to get the distance in. I think it is your personal choice.0

This. I completed the program the first week in June. I cannot run 3 miles in 30 minutes. I can run 3 miles in 40 minutes or 2 ish in 30. The beatiful thing is that I couldn't run for 5 minutes months ago!0 -
I go by time now since I wasn't a runner before. Once I finish the program, I might restart it but focus on distance that time around. I don't think I'll be able to run a 5k in 30 minutes either based on how fast I can run now. But that's ok. Just being able to run for 30 minutes will be such an accomplishment for me! Good luck!0

Ugh. I am so struggling. I got to about week 6 of the program and was feeling really good and just started running without the app going. I made it 2 miles on my best run without stopping. Then the humidity started and my 50 degree temps went away. Now I can barely run at all. So discouraging. :indifferent: I have a 5K (that I really wanted to run) on June 23 and I feel like I'm gonna have to walk waaaay more than I want. I guess, looking back, I really should have stuck to C25K and finished that instead of trying to do it on my own before I was ready. I'm going to start it again after my race and stick with it this time to the end. And yes, I just want to run for 30 minutes, whatever distance that may be. Speed will come in time. Right now I just want to be able to run again without all the fatigue!0

i'm going by time but it's a bit of a worry. I'm doing a 5k in a couple of weeks. I'm in week 7 atm and can't even do 2 miles in 25minutes yet. speed will follow i assume, for now i'm working on stamina. a couple of months ago i was struggling to run 2 minutes, so i have every faith i'll be able to do 5k in 30m eventually!0

Yes, and you will also have extra adrenaline when you are running your 5K! You will do it!0
