New to lifting

Hey! I've started working out again and I know I need to incorporate strength training into my workouts. I'm too scared to venture over the to the weights area in the gym to figure out how to start lifting. Any advice/beginner workouts anyone would recommend?

One of the best ways to start is lifting free weights using compound movements. I've been using Stronglifts 5x5. Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe is suggested a lot. I don't have his book but I use his youtube videos quite a bit to work on form. Don't be afraid to go to the free weight section of your gym.

Just wanted to add. You want to have what you doing in place before you ever go to the gym. Figure out what you want to do and write it down, either using a phone app or a notebook. Then take your phone or notebook with you. That way you can go straight to the equipment you need. It will take some of the intimidation factor out when your standing there looking at benches, bars and plates.

I'm only a few weeks into strength training and will also recommend Starting Strength. I haven't read the book (it mostly seems to be dedicated to how to do each move in detail... a process I'd rather do a bit with in person guidance and trial and error). I go into the gym with my notebook with how many sets of each exercise I'd like to do and at what weight. I don't always hit the goal, but I have fun with it. I actually really like that the whole workout doesn't have many exercises. I've even convinced two friends to join me (one scoffed at how few reps I do until she ached the next day)

Some really helpful books are New Rules of Lifting for Women by Lou Schuler and The Female Body Breakthrough by Rachel Cosgrove. I've done both programs and have loved them. Rachel has youtube videos with Livestrong where she gives beginners and workout program and shows how to do each exercise correctly.
