Weight loss so dang slow

I am getting so discouraged.
I have been at this for four months now. I started logging after I had lost 3 pounds already. So technically I have lost 16 pounds all together. Which I suppose is on track for one pound a week. I lose the weight wierd too. Not actually at one pound per week. It will be like, Bam! I lose 3 lbs all at once. Usually after my period. But even that isn't always the case.
I read others stories and progress and some have been at this for half the time and have well surpassed me on weight lost.
It is so discouraging at times.
Why? Why do we have to lose it soooooo slow?! It is beyond frustrating.
I am sorry, I just had to do a little bit of a rant, to others who may (or may not) understand how I feel with all these thyroid issues.

Remember- it's a journey, not a race. It took me a year to lose 35lbs, but I made it. Try to not compare yourself to others - that can sometimes be depressing. But, from what I've seen, for every person who's lost 8lbs a month consistently, there are 5 who either didn't lose anything or who gave up early. Make a commitment to be there for the long haul and try to remind yourself that your journey is what it is.0

Excellent words! thank you very much! You are right, and even my son tells me not to compare myself to others lol. I am happy that I have lost any weight at all, and that I have stuck with this for as long as I have. I think I have done well so far. I am working hard and I should not be so hard on myself. I can see the difference as well so that is a plus. That day was definitely one of my more difficult days, which I am sure we all have. I feel much better today and I feel motivated once again. These things cycle, I imagine. But I am sticking it out and I will keep on keeping on.0 -
I haven't lost for 4 months, well I've lost and gained, lost and gained - but I am basically where I was in February. I know how you feel this is all so very frustrating.0

It can be very frustrating. I have the same issue. I average about a lb a week, which is my goal, but it is spuratic. You just have to keep chugging along!0

I started off well after dropping wheat and going low carb but then it had slowed down by last xmas (started last June) After xmas I've only lost a few pounds each month and also usually only the week when water came off at end of period.
At last TOTM I didn't lose anything the week after at all and month before only 1lb the whole month! I'm at weight I used to be before all my weight went on though. My original goal was 9st 7 which I reached but then decided I wanted to go lower but I can't seem to lose anymore.
It is frustrating. I'm trying to up the exercise and do more than one session a day and finding a different way to exercise, maybe try and find a different exercise that will be harder for you to do and maybe burn more learning how to do it?.. eg try Zumba if you did swimming as your exercise before or something?0 -
I know what you're talking about. I'm trying to loose weight since September last year and I lost about 16 pounds until today, which is more than frustrating. I had an ecotrophologist check my diet and she said I shouldn't eat less than I'm doing right now, but it is just soooo annoying to lose perhaps a maximum of 200g per week...
I'm excercising at least 4 times a week and that all kind of different sports (e.g. Zumba, Running, Badminton, Aqua fitness, Pilates) but it doesn't get better.
Has anybody some more ideas?0 -
I've been at it since Jan 2 and have only lost 9 lbs and am 30lbs over my low weight of 4 years ago when everything went haywire. Nothing at all in the last 3 months - I just keep gaining (overnight it seems) 3 pounds and losing it over the course of a month and then right back. I am beyond frustrated. I eat well, stick within my calorie limits and work out 5-6 days a week - have done 1 round of Insanity and am halfway through a Chalean Extreme/TurboFire hybrid. I had extensive testing done 2 months ago and found out I have Hashimoto's, adrenal fatigue on top of PCOS which I've known about for years. So 3 strikes. I found a good endocrinologist. Going back next week for more blood/saliva testing and then adjust meds/vitamins. I'm just so tired of fighting this tooth and nail and not seeing any progress at all but I'm going to keep trying.0

I can relate to everyone's frustration, I have lost and gained the same 4 lbs the past few month, I have just started to add more cardio but finding the time is difficult. As someone said, this is not a race but a journey and this is my journey, and I shouldn't compare it to other people''s journey. I find it comforting to come to this board and see that I am not alone or the only going through this.0

It is so frustrating, I have been at it since January and have lost 10 lbs but up and down all the way. I am seeing nice muscles though from the weights 3x per week and have to do an hour of cardio 5-6days per week to see any results and it is still slow going. So frustrating but if I give up I will just be tired, depressed and gaining weight0

its mega frustrating ... I have not managed to lose anything in the past 4 months......0

It is frustrating but I just keep going. I find that a gluten free, soy free, dairy free diet helps. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's back in January 2012. Since I've been exercising and following a strict diet, I have been able to lose at least 1lb a week or more. I am currently doing only cardio for 1 hour in the gym (or running outside) at least 5 days a week.0

I know how you feel!
was on levothyroxine for years which wrecked my body. have recently switched to armour thyroid and feel amazing on it!
I gained a ton of weight on my previous meds and felt so miserable because no matter how much I dieted or exercised the weight would not come off.
I've lost 10lbs the past couple of weeks and am thrilled. Armour is amazing but took me 6months to get rid of the levothyroxine from my system I think
what thyroid meds are you on?0 -
I am definitely in the right place! I have been working my butt off since October. In this time I have lost 19 lbs. I swear, it feels like an ounce at a time. I am also feeling very discouraged and having a hard time staying motivated. It's so frustrating when you see someone else get amazing results doing less work. We will get there together0

It is good to know I am not alone in losing so slow.
I have started a new work out DVD...well I am at least a week and a half into it.
I had great luck with the first one so I hope for similar results with this one.
Some one asked about the meds I am on. I take levothyroxine and cytomel. I am also on 5000 units of Vitamin D per day, meloxicam which is for my back, glucosamine and condroiton as well, and a few other supplements lol.
I had a bad bout with my back at the end of May, that pretty much spanned June, and I am only just now starting to feel better, back wise. I found out why my back hurt so dang bad, and now I see a physical therapist, and will be seeing an arthritis specialist in July. But I have started working out regularly again now that I know what exercises to modify and which ones to avoid all together. So I am hoping the scale will start moving for me once again.
Cross your fingers lol.0 -
I think that if any of you have lost about a pound a week, or the weight loss is steady, whatever your number, and you are dealing with your thyroid, then please try to be happy! You are doing awesome! Losing 1 pound a week is AMAZING and sustainable. Losing 1 pound a week when you are dealing with a crappy thyroid is sometimes akin to a miracle.
I know it's all relative, but there are some of us on here (me included) that haven't really lost ANYTHING in months. Try to keep your weight loss in perspective, and keep doing what you are doing because something is working!!

Agree that losing any weight while hypo is pretty good and many of us stall in weight loss for months - myself included.
But it is more about what you put in your mouth than how much you exercise. If you are eating a lot of processed foods, sugar, starchy foods, etc. it will stick to you like glue. It's really important to clean up your diet - I know that out on those other forums they talk about calories in/calories out -- and they say that all calories are the same and you can eat any type of food as long as the calories are lower -- that's all crap when you have hypothyroidism - and possibly crap if you are a woman, have PCSOS, are post-menopausal, have insulin resistance, etc.
So, don't believe that you can eat 1200 calories a day of crappy food, alcohol, sugar, etc... chances are high you won't lose weight on that.
You may want to read the book: "Why we get fat and what to do about it" -- pretty eye opening.0 -
I am in the midst of a month long plateau. I started off the month with a drop. Then went up with my period. My doctor switched me to a new pill mid-month, and I stayed up 2-3 pounds all month. I just dropped back to the weight I was at the beginning of the month. Grrr.....I am hoping to just be down 1 for the month. All progress has stalled: inches and the scale.0

I hear you!! I have not lost in weeks! It has been at least a month. But like I said, sometimes, I will drop a couple of pounds out of the blue and it seems to "catch me up". I am hoping that will be the case again. I have had some issues lately with constipation. Trying everything to remedy that, I am sure I would be down if I got that figured out lol. Because my scale shows me at the same weight I have been for weeks, with the exception of those added few pounds during that TOM.
Just hanging in there.
Oh, and I do need to try to eat more healthier versions of some of my dishes. It gets a little hard sometimes. I have to cook a lot from scratch, because my oldest is allergic to soy. We still eat pasta, and I still eat potatoes. I also need to cut my sugar....boy you just never know what or how much sugar some things have...its amazing.0 -

I've been trying to eat no starches at dinner. Just protein and veggies (the rest of the day I follow what I am in the mood for as usual!) It seems to help. I do it Sun-Th.
One easy thing to do is to double or triple up on your veggies at every meal. 50% veggies on your plate, 25% protein, 25% starch. (At dinner I do 2/3 veggies, 1/3 protein)0 -
Slow and steady usually means you will keep it off. I know with this sort of thing it happens so much slower than for people who dont have the medical issues. Just decide you are important and you wont give up.. It may not happen as fast as it does for some but it will if you keep at it..
I too have been doing the gain/lose same few pounds for a while. I will get down to lowest and sometimes have a partial pound lower than previous though. Those days are the best.0
