Hi everyone, I am on day four of the Sonoma diet. I have done it before so I kind of know what to expect as far as headaches, being irritable etc. What is new is that I have a much more intense exercising routine this time and I am really having a hard time keeping up. Did anyone here exercise during "induction" and if so, what tips to you have to keep my energy level up. Also I am looking for some low carb friends if anyone is interested!

Oh man... I am just doing low carb (no specific diet, just under 50 carbs) and I am starting into week #2 and NO ENERGY when working out. Even more, my muscles get fatigued way quicker than before. If you find the secret... I'll be happy to hear it. There's a noticeable difference in how intense I can workout... and it's something that does really bother me.

Eat plenty of calories, make sure to include fats, drink plenty of water and make sure you are getting enough salt. Especially in this heat.

Here's an article on how to make your own low carb sports drink: http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/beverages/a/sportsdrink.htm

Here's the thing that I've learned over time. When starting low carb, most people feel a bit sluggish and can't workout at the same intensity level that they could before. That being said, you get better results from less intense workouts. Eventually you will see a return of the intensity and your results will be amplified even further.

Most people ignore sodium intake, or assume that it is bad. This is not the case on a low carb diet. If you are feeling sluggish and barely getting through your workouts, drink a salty beef (or similar) broth for a few days and go about your routine as normal. 99% of the time this works for me and I'm back to optimal performance.

Another important factor is to ensure that you are not cutting down too much on calories, since there really is no need unless you are also just trying to shred the last little bit of fat for a aesthetic goal. Get in MORE calories than you are used to, mostly from fat and you'll notice a huge uptick in energy.

Fact is that each gram of fat has over 2x the calories than a gram of protein or carbs...just make sure you're getting enough. And since fat is the preferred fuel for the body when doing low carb, showing it that you are taking in enough will make a difference I assure you.

I am going to try all of this... thank you for this advice!!

once you're firmly in ketosis you should have so much more energy you won't know what to do with it. (takes about 5 days for me to get over carb flu)

Thank you guys for all of the suggestions! I am definitely going to give them a try, and I have to say that on today on day 5 I have much more energy . I also slept well last night for the first time since starting the diet so that could be part of it!

I actually have a question about the sodium. Are you saying that I should be going over my government guideline for sodium every day and this will make me feel better?

What I am getting at is that you should increase the sodium through a broth until the effects that you are describing go away.

Government guidelines are completely meaningless, especially when it comes to sodium. Your sodium intake needs are just higher when you are on a low carb diet, and there has been absolutely no proof that a low sodium diet is beneficial to anyone that doesn't already suffer from heart disease and other circulatory diseases. If you have these conditions proceed with caution, however a low carb diet has been shown to reduce blood pressure anyway, so the additional sodium is not even a factor.

Thanks Marll! I'll try adding some broth throughout the day and see if that helps out. I actually am feeling much better today but it was a rest day. :-)
