For my first race, I wore a pair of older Asics that I donated to the muddy heap at the end of the race. Ditto the second race. (I had several pairs of older sneaks just laying around). Since those earlier races, I'd moved towards minimalist shoes.
I ran my last two in Newton Running shoes, which I really do love for the road and dry trails, and they wash to like new, but they don't have traction at all. I was a slippery mess on the muddier hills. I have a pair of Pumas with Vibram soles that I use for CrossFit that wouldn't dare to try, I think stepping on a rock would be agony.
Bought a pair of Inov-8 Bear Grips today.

They had reviews from folks who had done Tough Mudders, and they are still only 7 ounces (double that, I'm sure, when adding mud!)
What are you racing in?

I ran my first race today in a pair of low-end Nike running shoes that I got at Winners (TJ Maxx in the US) for $40. I use them for home workouts (well, I did, we'll see if all the mid comes out!).
When I graduate to races longer than 5k those Bear Grips look very nice.0 -
Salomon SpeedCross 3. They're lightweight and have serious tread on them!0

I hiked the Warrior Dash at Gunstock in a pair of Puma's that I love but they totally aren't made for off road so my traction did suck. The day of the race I used my Reebok Reflex's and it was night and day! I use them as my runners and on the trail they supported me everywhere I needed, even after the Water slide and mud they still somehow remained comfy then washed like new the next day. I'll be sticking with these bad boys for a while0
