Ketosis/Weight Loss

I'm in week 2 of low carb (but not atkins style - just under 50) and I noticed I lost a 1/2 to a full pound everyday... until a few days ago. I've been testing with the strips (yeah yeah... I know I caved) and I was in it...
Tonight I drank some crystal light energy, went to work out, and FINALLY felt amazing while working out for the first time since starting the diet... I'm sure it was the crystal light. Anyway, something weird: my sweat is usually amazingly salty and tonight it didn't taste like anything. For the first time in my life? So not sure what that's about. Then I came home, peed on the stick and I was no longer (according to it) in ketosis. I'm wondering if the crystal light (which saved my workout) might have caused it?
Anyway, my question to you all that have been low carbing awhile: What was your weight loss like? I know with the riddance of glycogen goes with it water. So i am assuming you lose a lot at first, then it backs off? What rate should I be losing at? 2 lbs a week? 1? I'm 15 lbs within my goal weight. Is it harder to reach that on low carb?
I would love all your sage wisdom. This board is amazing! I learn something new from you all everyday!

Once that initial drop of water is done it slows down but should remain at 2lb a week or so. Hang in there!0

Ms, really and truely, one to two lbs a week in ongoing weight loss is good, very good. Yes 7 lbs or more is common the 1st week, but as you said, glycogen is q part glucose and 5 parts water. The more you have to lose the bigger your 1st week will be.
You didn't gain the weight in 3 weeks did you? Losing is tougher than gaining so it really is reasonable to think that it may take as.long or longer to lose it as to gain it.
Many people don't want to hear this or refuse to accept it. Yes, some can sprint towards the tinker line. Then what?0 -
Thanks guys! No I am totally fine with 2 lbs a week! I just didn't know what was normal0

I am losing about 1.5 pounds a week. And that is with a day or day and a half of higher carb splurge eating thrown in.0

Why meridian. 1) an intense workout will consume ketones leaving less to be excreted. 2) Ketones don't care if they came from Burning your body fat or fat you just ate in that respect ketones in urine are not a clear predictor of weight loss. The goal is weight loss.
3 sweat. Well, when I'm in heavy ketosis I have quite a ripe body odor after working out, and sometimes even without. , so I don't really need the sticks to know.0 -
i would be surprised if crystal light knocked you out of ketosis. i drink it exclusively (i hate plain water)
but i'm more surprised you could eat 50 grams and get into ketosis.0 -
Read the ingredient list crystal light, and virtually all of those sweetener packets use msltodextrine or some other form of sugar as a carrier. Remember it is legal for a mfg to round down. AMD serving size plays a role. one serving of C L has 5 calories right? They must come from something. I don't see any source of fat or protein in the ingredients Do you? Safe to assume that comes from 1.25 g of carb. Just like w coffee. Trace amounts can build up over multiple servings0

Cara - I totally have dropped weight in the last few weeks being under 50 grams of carbs - I really try to keep it as low as possible, but long ago when I kept it under 20 - I passed out on Atkins. It's my goal, don't get me wrong, and I know I would lose more if I were eating even less carbs, but since I am ok with the amount I have lost in two weeks, I am going to see if this will continue to let me drop a lb or 2 a week and I am happy.
As for the Crystal Light, I had one packet. I used to drink the energy one before working out all the time, but I have not drank anything like that at all the last two weeks. I don't trust it either... but it really helped with my workout. I cut out all artificial sweeteners... so drinking that crap is not something I do very often. I just wish that I could have the level of energy I had before low-carb. I know I'm only in week two.... but MAN I used to be so much more energetic!
I have been drinking a little salt water in the morning to counteract the "black outs" I get every time I stand up.... it helped I think. However, for the first time in my life, I worked out yesterday and my sweat didn't taste like anything - it's usually overly salty. Do you think that means I need even more salt?0 -
Meridian, I agree with LCNY that it's unlikely that the Crystal Light threw you out of ketosis. You were using ketone bodies as your energy source during your workout. So you just burned 'em all up. Your body should have made more (by digesting/metabolizing some of your body fat.) So, if you tested the next day, you'd likely be getting color on your test strips.
The rate of your weight loss is best predicted by your net calorie deficit. Meaning, if you average eating 500 calories per day less than you mfp metabolic rate, you'll be losing a pound a week. If you're averaging a net deficit of 300 calories per day, it'll take 12 days to lose a pound, etc.
I'd advise against drinking salted water. It SOUNDS to me like you're not drinking enough water. That would explain feeling better after drinking some Crystal Light and your collapsing. Is your urine yellow or dark yellow? If yes, drink more water! If your urine is so light yellow it looks green or is clear, you're well hydrated.

Hi...
I have been LC for nine months and have lost 50 pounds. I am really LC....stay under 30 a day. I don't know if I am in ketosis or not because I don't test but I feel terrific! I think about 1-2 pounds a week is what is right...

I drink probably 4 liters of water a day, so it's for sure not a lack of water. When I do my bootcamp workouts I sweat like a beast and usually it;s over the top salty... more than the average person even. I read on the internet about drinking broth 9salt) to help with the blackout stuff I get when i stood up... I didn't drink any this morning though. My urine is always clear or really light yellow except when I wake in the morning.
Thanks about the ketosis - I didn't know if we used them up when we work out or what - I think i am still fuzzy on that. We burn fat, it turns into ketones, right? So we use those for energy then, correct? Then do they just come out in urine when we are done with them?0 -
Viciki - that is AWESOME! Do you work out, too? I'm trying to make sure I still workout... but I really have energy issues on this diet compared to me before it. Hopefully they will pass.0
