it can be done. i am a 6 year. just taken off all meds about a month ago now. have good and bad days. my body is just adjusting to not having something keep it steady. it has to do the work for itself with my help of eating properly and exercising.
    good luck to you.

You can either get off all meds are cut down greatly the number you are taking. I went from four (Feb 2006) to currently one, Metformin), It took me 3.5 years but I did it. I worked at getting my numbers undercontrol and didn't worry so much about my weight. In those 3.5 years I lost weight slowly, very slowly, but I can't tell you when I actually dropped all the weight. I do know that within the first six months, I lost 2 dress sized but put on 14 more pounds (the weight came from water because as you begin exercising and then increase the intensity, your muscles hold fluid). It took six months to lose by way of the scale those extra fourteen pounds but I continued losing dress sizes. Everyone thought I had dropped 50 to 75 pounds.

Two good books on the effects of exercise on diabetes are, The Healing Power of Exercise: Your Guide to Preventing and Treating Diabetes, Depression, Heart Disease, High Blood Pressure, Arthritis, and More, Drs Goldberg and Elliot, and The Diabetic Athlete's Handbook, by Sheri Colburg.

Welcome. Weight loss, diet and exercise can really help reduce meds. Walking is a great exercise because it is easy to do and fairly easy on your joints. I still enjoy a walk once or twice a week even though I often run now. This is a great place for support!

I second the strength training. It actually helped me improve my blood sugar levels, from 200+ I'm now at 120-140 still above the normal range but at least its not as high as before. The reason is that weight lifting burns calories mostly from glycogen stores that are found in our muscles that can do wonders for our blood sugar. With that, I can able to eat more carbs after a weight lifting session which trainers also recommend along with protein for muscle repair.
