Help, I have a new "issue" that has now occurred in my last 5 training runs, and I need this fixed prior to my race.
I get up about 4:00 for my training run, due to the summer heat. I"m very "regular" and use the facilities first thing in the AM, never feel like there's a problem. I leave around 5:00 AM for 18-20 miles.
But now, about mile 5-6, I have to "GO" right then. I run on long, out in the middle of no where roads, no facilities close or even near to use. I have made it to a public restroom a few weeks ago, just because I changed routes to head that way. But at a point, it's been me and the corn/wheat fields.
I have tried to wait around the house to see if there are any issues, but frankly don't have time and need to get on the road. I have avoided wanting to take Immodium AD due to other issues it may create. And I'm not a med taker. I've switched to avoiding taking my regular supplements the night before hoping that was the issue as I take Magnesium at bedtime.
My RD suggest (and my DH) that I actually take more fiber or magnesium to really make things loose but then I worry that I would really have troubles out there on the road.
I'm sure I'm not the first runner who has "run" into this problem, and hopeful someone with more experience can help me avoid this situation in the future.
I should add, this is my second marathon, and I've ran numerous half and have been running about 2 years. I've heard this can happen with new runners, but goes away generally with more running. This is not my case.
On a dietary front, I don't do dairy, wheat, and have generally been avoiding meat as well. I've had no dietary changes since this problem started.
I also never eat before my long runs.

Are you eating pre-run? Coffee? Anything?0

For the record I'd go less fiber.0

I find this happening now that the heat is upon us. I take magnesium 2 x day - the largest dose at bedtime. I try to eat at least 1 1/2 - 2 hours pre-run. Used to be oatmeal, but now I have found a bacon, egg & cheese on corn breakfast taco has the right protein/carb ratio to get me through my workout.0

I don't have an answer, but a suggestion. Setup your route so you loop back by the house after 4 miles. Stop in, take care of business, and then finish up (I am assuming this issue doesn't occur multiple times during the run).0

I decided I better look for routes like this - however, I'm so worried that it will happen in my marathon and screw up my time. Plus I am running a half at the end of August, and worried as I know it's VERY small, and I doubt there will be any facilities at the start, during the race and only at the finish.0 -

They would have to have facilities at the start. Everybody has to go before a race.
I take an immodium on race day. The race day nerves make things a little more unpredictable. I've had great success doing it this way.0 -
i have a couple of running buddies that have a slow digestive process and therefore have started to switch ot liquid forms of food for up to 12 hours before their long runs/ races to avoid these issues.0

LOL, Not sure about the facilities at the start. They bus us to the middle of no where to start and we run to the finish. The bus leaves 1 hour before the race start, cuz it's a 30 minute drive for a bus to the start. I didn't think about it when I signed up. Thinking I will pack TP just in Case
With the immodium, do you have any issues of dehydration cuz of it or problems after the race to get it out of your system? That's my concern with that. I've tried eating Ginger, thinking it would calm my stomach, but that doesn't seem to be solving this problem.0 -

This used to happen to me and I called it my "5 mile poo" LOL. Like clockwork, it hit me at mile 5. Didn't matter what I eat, didn't eat, whatever. I did just this, made a loop so I could stop by my house. I did that for about 6-8 runs and for reasons I can't explain it just stopped happening. Hasn't happened since. I haven't changed anything so I wonder if my body is just more adapted to long runs now. Sorry, it's no fun : (0
