I get so TIRED of people telling me "You dont have to eat that way, you know?" and saying things like "I eat ice cream and cake and pasta and I lost 50lbs!!"...... Well whoopty do for you! I WISH that was the case for me (or many people like me). I love the "ITs all about calories in vs calories out, you just have to work harder, you arent being honest about what you are eating". Oh really? Well, I call Bull$***. I dont CHOOSE to live a low carb lifestyle. Well, I do because otherwise I would be diabetic and weigh 500lbs. For me, and many people, it is medically necessary. Hell, even if its not medically necessary, who gives a rat's *kitten* whether Joe Smith or Jill Jones is low carb, if it works for them.... leave them ALONE about their food choices. I think its great that YOU (not YOU.... but you know what I mean) can eat whatever the hell you want and then exercise and the fat just pours off your body. Congratulations, I totally envy you but guess what... everyone is different and just because you and the skinny ***** (jealous much? LOL) next to you eat ice cream everyday, doesnt mean that we can all do that and lose weight.
I was on WW for a YEAR. NEVER strayed from my points, exercised, took supplements, etc. I gained weight. I got on MFP and stayed with a 1500 calorie diet for 6 months. I gained weight. I went to low carb on advice from a Dr. Lost 28 lbs and still going strong. Why cant the people of the carb eating world leave us alone? We arent telling them they arent working hard enough because they eat carbs and arent losing weight. Grrrr! I am sorry to go on a rant like this but there are so many MFP-ers that bash the low carb lifestyle. We are all on here for the same reason - to lose weight, get healthy, etc. Leave me to my choices and I will leave you to yours. When I say "I cant eat pasta"... well, I guess I could.. if I want my blood sugar to skyrocket and my health issues to go haywire. Maybe next time I will just say "I would rather not eat pasta". Is that more PC?

Honestly I can tell you yesterday was a bashing fest and I just stop reading what people were saying about 1 pages into it
Short story is I did 5 months with a trainer followed everything she told me to the T and lost a whoping 3 pounds the entire time. She accused me of "cheating" not being honest etc I was on the floor of the gym crying because I felt I was having a mental breakdown. Go to the doctor she suggest I have some serious problems with insulin, BAM weight falls off me when I do Low carb.
Do I wish I could eat ice cream and lose weight hell yeah! but the reality is my biochemisty is not the same as the average person. Im highly allergic to gluten (found this gem out from the doc) and have to stay away from the breads and pastas!
I got a message today from a friend who said Im going to quit "low carb" and I hope you wont remove me as a friend because I like you etc. That really made me sad.. Like we cant be friends if you dont do the same diet Im on? but that seems to be an on going theme on MFP what I believe is gospel and if you dont do what Im doing you are nuts etc. Primal diets will kill you, Low carb is dangerous, or Im going to die because some study XYZ said so...0 -
I get tired of hearing that Atkins is just eating hamburgers, bacon and cheese and/or just 20 grams of carbs forever and ever. Uhh no. BUT I use to think that too. It sounded llike the most idiotic diet I had ever heard of, next to the cabbage soup diet. I only began Atkins in desperation after gaining 65 lbs over the last 7 years. Low fat, low calorie, south beach and weight watchers made me realize I am sensitive to pasta and fruit. The loss of cravings on Atkins confirmed it.0

I agree with you and feel your pain. Carbs are not my friend and I need to moderate them. I don't get annoyed at them eating ice cream and losing weight and I don't expect them to ridicule me for my choices.

I like the wilds of the F&N forum ... the forum is fun ... I guess that is just my combative nature If I set one person who wouldn't naturally low-carb (or concentrate on the biology rather than the math) thinking a little differently then it's job done.
It's not for everyone but I'd wager most people struggling on yer standard low fat, deprivation, hungry and exercising like crazy plan would benefit. Hey, if only to give it a go for a month.
Seriously, I am comfortable with what works for me so I just let the more ridiculous comments slide and rock on.
I'm happy to take on advice and warnings though. It all just goes to refine the framework of my nutrition.
A simple way to weed out the less than savvy is to ask about the benefits of consuming coconut oil, if someone says 'It's saturated fat, avoid it' then I have a pretty good idea of how much attention to pay their advice.
That would go for a doctor too ...

My thought is that the human race is getting fatter for some reason. Something has happened that is causing people to fatten up and the "people in charge" have no idea WTF they are really talking about. I honestly welcome people to offer suggestions but I cant deal with people who are close minded and want to beat the "low carb diet is the devil" all the time.
As for the coconut oil thing... I have had so many people tell me Im going to kill myself eating that way I giggle a little to myself when I hear this!0 -
desk jobs/laying on the couch all day. i ate the same way for 5 years, but i walked to and from work, and i was on my feet for 8 hours a day. once i stopped being so active (lost my job) i got fat. fast.
sure eating carbs was fine when everyone was doing farm work or factory work or whatever.. being active!
but now most of us have desk jobs (or no jobs!)
that's what i guess about why we got fat =]0 -

I hear ya! My boyfriend was like, "why don't you just count calories." Well, sweetie, because I've been trying to do that for most of my life and it hasn't worked so far!0

When I was just counting calories I got down to about700-1000 cals a day and was still not loosing.
Maybe a lb a month...
Switched to low carb and got to my goal weight...Eating 1300-1400 cals a day
If only the poor people knew they could eat more food on this woe I bet they would come join us

The other day I had a check up at my gym. They measure your weight, body fat and make some measurements of hips, belly, arms and legs. The coach was so surprised that I finally started to lose weight since starting low carb. All these months before they accused me of cheating and eating too much, tried to push me into their nutrition group (which would cost an additional crazy amount of money) and so on. After I told her I started low carb and that this is the reason I started to lose, she got angry and said the yoyo effect would kill it all away and that that kind of nutrition would only make me sick, weak and fat.

The key thing I want everyone to remember is this: MFP recognizes low-carbohydrate intakes - plain and simple.
PCP's, Endocrinologists, Vascular Specialists, Podiatrists to name a few, prescribe it to patients with diabetes, peripheral vascular disease. Slowly, OBGYN's are coming 'on board' the low-carb train because of the effects of insulin and the role it plays hell on other body systems and how it effects fertility.
We are a medically accepted dietary intake - and yes, Dr. Atkins was a real doctor (aka solid science that just hasnt been debunked as of yet, and probably never will).
I was actually having this conversation with my personal Podiatrist (we work together too), she advocates STRONGLY as clean-as possible with a reduction in refined foods. Foot-care-related, it makes a significant difference. By looking at my feet, she knew I have a healthy diet... just not healthy calcaneals! LOL!
Unfortunately people easily (insert dramatic voice to that word) misconstrue low carb with total elimination. That is not entirely true for all folks who choose this intake. There are people who MUST totally eliminate, there are those who restrict greatly, and then there are those who have found manageable ways of incorporating it without getting heavy-handed carb-count-wise.
I work in healthcare and I have ANYONE's backs when it comes to low carb-intakes... I know exactly what refined carbs do to a person's body... Im not just a healthcare worker but Im also a patient too! 8-)
I would like to advise each and everyone here, if at any time you are being badgered, attacked or targeted whatsoever on the main boards, do not hesitate to report the offensive post. If its a clear and concise violation of MFP's rules (which, from the sound of things, its 'there'_, report them. If the volunteer moderator replies to you and says "this is not offensive"... you have the right to take it to one of the MFP staff.... copy-paste the volunteer mod's message, and give the link to the thread and indicate who you attempted to report.
We are just as much allowed to be here, use MFP and feel as though we are accepted here. No one.. and I mean NO ONE is to be giving anyone here any trouble: main boards OR groups.
Chin up folks! If you ask me, we have the best food porn here.... the rest of them dont know what they are missing!

Hello Fellow Low Carbers,
I can totally relate to your rant. When I first started my low carb lifestyle (notice I didn't say DIET) I never told anyone I was on a diet because when I mentioned to a few friends that I'm cutting out certain food to lose weight they gave me unwanted negative advice. So I used a medical issue that I had for years as my reason to change the way I eat and that's when people stopped giving me advice and actually were interested in what I ate and would encourage me to continue if it helped with my health. :-) Sneaky I know but it works.:laugh:
Sometimes to make a short story I would say I eat high protein foods instead of saying low carb. It seems that low carb is a bad word in some peoples diet dictionary.:mad:
I really can’t stand when people think they know what’s better for my body than I do.:mad:
So over the past 2 years since I’ve changed the way I eat, I’ve lost over 35 lbs and my health issue is no longer an issue.
Plus I’ve had family and friends ask me what I eat exactly and now they’re low carbing and don’t know it ROFL!!!
So stick to your guns….or should I say BACON!!! LOL:drinker:

It amused me that my wife announced at a social event last week that 'xxxx isn't eating bread' like I was some circus curiosity.
If I had some (obvious) medical issue with bread/gluten it wouldn't be an issue but because I choose to avoid bread I'm a freak.

Aside from being a grumpy P.I.T.A. when first getting of the carb roller coaster, I love how I feel limited my carbs. We are all here to get healthy and support each other. If Bob over there wants to eat nothing but snails and rice cakes, more power to him! If Jane wants to eat chia seeds and seaweed, go for it! I'm interested in what people are doing and what their results are, not judging them and making them feel like a freak. Whatever works for you and your body.0

Aye, there is wide difference in perception if you say 'I avoid processed foods and sugar', versus 'I am low carb' or 'I eat Paleo'.
All amount to, basically, the same thing ... it's just a matter of mostly minor details.0 -
They get all crazy because they are sad that they can't eat carbs AND what we eat, too. I say this because I was one of them at one time. So when they bash, I would just say it's a medical thing and leave it at that. Usually if someone says it's medical, people lay off. Even more so, when people say stuff to me, I go on and on about how awesome I love this and how great I feel!0

I thought i would add my 2p to this discussion, ive suffered the same "ignorance" i would call it about what others think about low carb. Ive also had the medical "ameteurs" tell me its wrong.
I suffered 2 heart attacks back in 2010 and I would say the major cause of this was the type of food I was eating (pizza, takeway, pies etc...) and the fact that I smoked 30 cigs a day - the consultant said the cigs and diet definately played a part in my problem. At the time I was only 40 years old.
Ive since stopped smoking and for the last 2 years I have felt great but knew inside I had to loose some weight after weighing in at 105.5kg.
I started low carb a little over 3 weeks ago and i feel absolutely fantastic, im no longer tired after meals, I have a great memory and can recall things that I previous couldnt or struggled too, I am full of energy and the best thing of all ive dropped just over a stone.
I did this cutting out beer, bread, potatoes and the processed foods I craved for. - no real sacriface. So if it means I continue to loose weight and my blood pressure, resting heart rate, cholesterol etc stay fine then sod what other people say.
One day ill get in the "normal" weight range ;-)

It's nice to know that I am not alone in this boat. It's not like I sit around all day munching on bacon wrapped butter sticks. LOL
I FEEL so much better and my weight loss has been slow and painful at times but the fact that I dont feel like a slug makes it worth it all by itself.
Today, we had a company picnic and I allowed myself a small sliver of german chocolate cake and a few of these fabulous pastry type cookies called Rosettes. Anyway, I did pretty good with the exception of the sweets. Now, a 1/2 hour later, I feel horrible. THIS is why I dont eat carbs, not because of my Dr., not because I want to be skinny.. but THIS, the nasty, greasy, bloated, lethargic feeling I get about an hour after eating sugary, processed snacks. I do envy those that can eat cake and not feel this way but its not for me, not anymore.

This was my experience when I went to the gym/trainer. She is 130Lbs solid muscle never been overweight a day in her life. I spent 5 months doing exactly what she/doctor told me, logged everything, never cheated once!, and I got a whooping 3 pound weight loss! So I am cheating, or just "not being honest." I havent been back to the gym in 35lbs/5months rofl! I loathe the thought of going back in there but now I have a different motivation !
I have a BA in social work and am seriously thinking about getting my PT cert so I can start helping people. I told my husband last week my idea and he thinks its an awesome idea! The services I received at the gym were so horrible (not just one trainer many!) that I know I could help/encourage them just by sharing my exp/struggles as a fellow human being! Weight loss isnt just about weight its about a lifestyle change. For me there are alot of emotional/mental struggles also, but I know in my heart I could help SOOOO many people change for the better!0 -
