Wanted to find out if anyone had any exercise ideas for a 10 hour shift/where your job requires you to sit all day long? I try to walk at least 10 laps in a shift around the parking lot/which equates to approximately 1 mile. Any other suggestions would help/thx!

I walk up and down the flights of stairs at the station a few times a days. I also jump rope in the bay, do lunges around the bay (when no one is looking), and I do jump squats in the bay. A lot of times I will wash the truck or my car with music on and dance while I do it. My co workers used to laugh at me when I did it at first but now they join in. I make most of what I have and go with it. I will walk around the station to but that gets boring a lot of times. Just bring sneakers to jump rope in cause boots hurt. Hope this helps some. I work 12 and 24 hour shifts so between sitting on my butt and bordem this helps a lot. I know it isn't a lot or the most exciting way but it is something and not sitting on my butt all day.

Calf raises on the stairs, wall push ups, chair dips, bring light weights and you can do bicep curls. There is also a stationary bike machine that can go under your desk so while you are sitting you can pedal. I know that some of these things don't work for all jobs, but a few might work for you. Also, do you have an adjustable desk? I work in dispatch and we just got our radio room remodeled so we have these nifty desks you can raise and lower so you can stand while working... I love them already! Helps to stand up and get the blood flowing again without having to leave the console. Another thing I have heard suggested is sitting on a yoga ball instead of a chair- my department would NEVER allow that but you could always ask! Hope some of this helps :)

I take it you don't have access to a gym at work. I'm fortunate to have free access to the Police Officers' gym so I spend my hour meal break there walking/running on treadmill, doing circuit training and weights. Stairs are great too!
Feel free to add me, my shifts are usually 12 hrs (2 days, 2 nights then off for 4)

I cycle or walk to work. I know it's not possible for everyone but I feel like I've done exercise
  • Just come work here in Detroit and within that 10 hour shift you will get plenty of running in...lol
  • Thank you all! I will try some of those things! I almost always use a wireless head seat, so I can walk around the room and stay active during my shift. I've also incorporated running in to my weekly routine. For anyone that has an iPhone ... check out the app C25K ... it's great! Stress + sitting = no good!

I pack my uniform and that in a gym bag and head to the gym before work and then come straight to work........my life consists of work, gym and sleep on the days I work.
