Xanax forever?

I've always had an anxiety disorder, and was able
to cope with it most of the time. For the past 5 weeks
it's been at its worst.
Everyday, the tightness returns and I take a xanax (0.5mg)
and in about 15 minutes I'm alright again. As soon as the
xanax starts to wear off, the tighness starts coming back.
Last Wednesday I thought I was having a heart attack, and
went to the ER. EKG, heart and chest x-rays, blood work,
everything came back normal. They put some adavant
in my IV, and I was fine after about 10 minutes.
Next day, I had a scheduled cardiologist appointment,
he went over my lab work, gave me a stress test, and
I passed everything with flying colors. I was told to keep
taking the xanax.
This sucks, because when the xanax wears off I feel
the tighness coming back. If I don't take the xanax, I
get the shortness of breath, the whole 9 yards.
The day at the ER, the attack started when I woke up,
and lasted until they gave me the adavant. (8:30-11:30)
The only other thing that works is a couple of glasses
of wine at night. That keeps the attacks at bay.

Xanax is great for occasional stress but it's not intended to be an every day medicine because it can cause "rebound anxiety." If you really need daily medicine, you should be on a maintenance antianxiety like paxil, buspar, wellbutrin; there are a zillion daily medicines that work better for daily needs because they aren't as likely to cause you to develop a tolerance, or rebound anxiety. An heart/blood pressure medicine, propanol, can also be used.
Also, if you need daily meds, you should look up doctor-led meditation classes in your area. I'm not talking about earthy-crunch-granola-new wave- spa stuff with candles and goofy talk. I'm talking about classes led by M.D.'s where they teach relaxation. The classes are expensive, they're usually at hospitals, they're full of professional people like other doctors, lawyers, airline pilots, etc., and they usually work. Meditation is ultimately the state of the art way to get the damn brain to stop cycling so fast and the heart to stop pounding and telling you incorrectly that you're about to die.0 -
Here's the one closest to you.

It's like the one I took at University of Pennsylvania, "Penn Center for Stress Management."
The Penn one was founded for 2 reasons. The only official 1st reason was help people cope who actually were dying, from cancer.
I think the unoffical reason it was founded was also to help doctors on their own staff to cope with the stress of being doctors. One of the founding docs taught my class. I think very highly of him. Even though I think the stress of treating dying patients was getting to him.0 -
I've never had Xanax before... I was prescribed Zoloft and Lorazipam "Basically Ativan." which seemed to work, although I had that nice drunk feeling when I had to take the lorazipam. I had never known Xanax was a rebound anxiety drug, but I do now, so I know not to take it. I have had so many trips to the E.R. due to anxiety. The heart attack like symptoms are as normal as breathing air. In fact, they are so similar in comparison, it scares me to think if I really had a heart attack and didn't know.0

Funny you mentioned that. My anxiety has been really high
right around the time I was taken off of my blood pressure
medication. (Lisinopril) I talked to a therapist yesterday, and
my wife and him seem to think the blood pressure medication
was helping to keep the panic attacks at bay.
Yesterday I lasted until 4:30 before I took a xanax. My goal is
to take zero, but when the cardio issues act up all I can do
is take the xanax. Only took the one yesterday.
I'm trying breathing exercises and even meditation. (new to me)
I was fearing rebound anxiety, but I don't want to be on a long
term anxiety medication. Paxil, zoloft, etc. I guess I could ask about
being put back on a low dosage of the blood pressure medication
I was taking? I was on it for 12 years, before it was lowered and
then eventually taken away. (lowered my sodium thanks to MFP)0 -
clonazepam, Klonopin was my best alternative to Xanax its longer lasted and provided me with the small immediate relief but stayed in my system longer. i did alot of research on it & its a really safe and popular drug that has great success rate to help people dealing with anxiety issues.
hope this helps doesnt hurt to try0 -

I actually have some Clonazepam that someone gave
me but was too affraid to take because I didn't know
how I would react to it. I wonder if it would help me
get off the xanax? I still have my blood pressure med
I could get back on as well. Like I said, I was on it for
12 years before the doctor pulled me off of it.
I may be healthier, (lower blood presure, BPM, skinnier, can do a 5k now!)
but I felt better when I was fat and happy! :mad:0 -
my doctor took me off xanax and put me on clonazepam, Klonopin, she referred to it as a longer lasting xanax & im doing pretty well on it.0

Well, it's been getting better. I'm down to one xanax a day now,
since Wednesday. Way better than the 3 I was having to take.
I'm having less cardio like sympyoms, and more physical
tingling, and a little feel lightness in my head. If I can get down
to one a day, I can get down to none. I have a call in to my doctor
about the blood pressure medication.0 -
A blood pressure medicine could help. I'vve been given the propanol, even though my blood pressure is fabulously low. I've been given the lowest dosege tablet to take "to take the edge off." It helps and seems to have no side effects for me.
The funny thing about my anxiety: after I lost 80 lbs in 2001, and I started drinking coffee, I had my first panic attacks (after 9/11), and months later I realized that when I was fat, I had been self-medicating - with carbs! Literally, a diet high in ice cream, potato chips and white bread had kept my anxiety to a low rumble, and when I took that away and added some caffine, I developed panic attacks. And I think that might be the case for a lot of people here in MFP (maybe not you, but any of us here who love carbs.)
I forget if you mentioned caffine - but it helps to cut caffine out completely. Switch to decaf coffee and decaf or herbal tea is you drink those. I know a lot of people who have trouble sleeping at night and are drinking a big iced tea at dinner and insist that these two things are not related. And of course they are.0 -
My wife is picking up the blood pressure medication
that my doctor called in today. (Low dose beta blocker)
As for caffine, I don't drink coffee or anything, for the most
part I drink water. Once in a great while I'll have a Sprite.
Still down to one xanax per day, so things seem like
they're getting better.0 -
Figured I'd post an update:
I'm on 25mg of Metoprolol and am still getting the
the minor symptoms you get right before an attack
starts. I'm able to fight it off for a little while (3 hours
today!) then I have to gove in and take a xanax. Tomorrow
will be two weeks of only having to take one (0.5mg) a
day.
I feel as I'm almost ready to quit them altogether, but
when the tightness starts to kick in, I know I've gone
to the point of no return and take the xanax.
From what I've read, most people that have gotten hooked
on this are taking 1mg 4 times a day! At most I was taking
0.5mg 3 times a day at the height of the attacks. Got down
to two, now down to one. Hopefully soon (probably after
the new baby arrives) I'll be done with this, and only take
it as needed for actual attacks. Not rebound attacks.0
