Bright Red Lipstick

LOVES her red lipstick!!!
Actually, this is a tinted gloss. Very easy to lick off when needed and reapply. I also wear “no smudge” lipstick around my son or during a race. Yesterday there was a comment about she’s not the one if she wears bright red lipstick. Quite a few ladies (myself included) responded they love bright red lipstick. So I asked a bunch of the guys what’s the story here!
The number one answer guys said was that they don`t care for a heavily made up look. Guys here in the South say that all the time, yet I look at the girls who they describe as “naturally beautiful” and I can TELL that face took at least an hour, and another hour for the “naturally falls into place” hair.
Some other answers were:
- red lipstick is overly sexual; most guys don't want a girl like that for a long term thing, mostly just a fling
- bright and glossy red lipstick can make women look cheap, makes their lips look bigger, think hooker
- This one REALLY surprised me: sends an old lady/too strict vibe cuz only the older ladies wear it
The general conclusion is that most guys said they prefer glossy lips (more kissable, more natural, more “fresh”). That said… back in the day when I only wore gloss and no makeup I got almost no male attention. It was actually my ex husband who asked me to start wearing red lipstick because he liked it. For years that was my only makeup, and WOW did I get more male attention after that! Drove my ex crazy! ;-).
So I’m not sure what to do with this information, but thought I’d pass it on to you single peeps.

Oh, and FWIW, I vary my lipsticks at work (usually whatever I can find in the morning rush) and the #1 favorite of the men I work with is a very vampy dark purple. Whenever I wear it, I always get at least one admirer who says something to the effect of “don’t file sexual harassment charges on me but you look great in that lipstick and I wish you’d wear it more often.”0

Coming from the sticks...any lady that wears an obvious amount of make up is going to stand out.
However most do wear some light eye something and lip gloss.
Not real noticeable though.0 -
I will have to try it! I usually go for the pinks! Maybe thats why Im single!0
-
Do what makes you happy. No one else matters in the lipstick dept.0

And lest anyone go on some rant about how ALLL women take hours to get ready, lol, I'll just throw out there that my profile pic was from the other night: I was late getting off work (and my date was early) so he was already at my door when I arrived. Total time from walking in the door with military uniform to heels, hair, evening makeup (and bright red lipstick, lol): 13 minutes.0

LOL! no, the guys all say they didn't like red. Maybe it's one of those things they ask out the girl they don't really like? IDK
Anyhow, if any ladies of color would like to try out red lipstick, just be forewarned to watch out for shades: most reds turn an ugly hot pink on me. I use mostly Avon Glazewear and Revlon Colorstay. Revlon you can get anywhere. If you don't have your own Avon lady, I sell it and can give you the link to my site off-list.0 -
I think it looks good on women... but I don't want that *kitten* on me, so I wouldn't be excepting any kisses0

I use the following in Rock on Ruby. It shows more orange here but in person on me it is more of a ruby red hence the name but if I wear this I usually only put on some mascara and a light eye shadow. I was always told heavy eye - light lips, light eye - heavy lips.

Lipstick in general gets on my nerves. I usually stick to clear lip gloss and/or chapstick.
I don't really mess with makeup for the most part, except mascara. I'm sure I do myself a disservice, but I just don't have the patience for it. :laugh:0 -
The only time I wear color on my lips and not just chapstick is if I'm using a lipstain. That way I don't have to worry about reapplying, or smudging it every if things get hot and heavy.
If a guy is judging me for wearing red on my lips then he sounds too high maintenance to me, hahaha0 -
As a side note, something that made me laugh and also roll my eyes a bit was a thread on MFP once and a lady posted 3 pictures of herself.
One was no make up (after swimming I think),the next probably for work with a minimum, and the last supposedly for going out and applied heavily.
She asked which one guys preferred and almost every guy picked the first or second with the third dead last.
However there was probably a dozen or more ladies going gaga over the third with suggestions of how to do it different or better.
My conclusion...even though supposedly to be appealing to guys I think it is more of an subconscious competition with lady peers.
Either that or it is a belief gained through the maturing/socialization process that no matter what guys say and mean many women will simply never accept it because it goes against a lifetime of "belief".0 -
Like I said, I'm a visual person. Behind closed doors, I like to SEE things. Red lipstick all over my man is a turn on. I wouldn't smear it all over him in public but in our privacy, different story.
I can see why guys might think "high maintenance" but obviously they're not the ones for me.
I wear foundation, blush, Chapstick/ gloss and mascara most days. It takes me about 10 min to do my face. I like it that way. But sometimes when I go out dancing I'll pull out the smokey eyes, glitter eyes, vintage rockabilly look etc.. Fun being a girl!0 -

Could be. Or, it could be that what the guys "say" and the guys "do" are two different things. They "say" they don't like a lot of makeup, but many of us find that the men pay more attention to the women that wear it. Granted, like I said, the guys around here don’t seem to realize how much makeup their “naturally beautiful woman” is actually wearing.
Where you live women are much more minimalist so maybe it’s also culture dependent.0 -
I wish I had full enough lips to wear red lipstick sometimes!
But alas, I don't. When I do wear makeup (which is normally about once or twice a week), I just play up my blue eyes and if I wear anything on my lips it's just chapstick or a light pink gloss.
Meh. \m/0 -
All you would see on my face would be my lips if I went straight up red. I already get enough DSL jokes from guy friends... SO don't need to go there
Most "natural beauty" is still cosmetically enhanced but just done in a way to enhance rather than draw attention. I'm a 5 minute girl most days with minimal powder foundation, cheek stain, lip gloss, and mascara... end of story. It took me years to get comfortable enough with myself to now leave the house in no makeup, but it's kind of freeing!0 -
Most of the time I just use chapstick. If I get a little fancier, it's lightly tinted (pink) lipgloss. I just don't think I can pull off colored lipstick.0

Sorry but this one made me laugh... I believe you just proved Carl's theory.0 -

Not sure what you mean...he said that a girl posted a series of before/after make up shots. The men overwhelmingly said they preferred less makeup. Yet, judging from what men go for when I'm out, I observe they're more likely to approach the women who are more made up, smokier eyes bright red lipstick.
So if the guys are saying (publicly) they don't like makeup but in real life that's who they're going for...well... then I don't blame women for trying what works. It's like men who keep saying they don't want to take an easy woman home to mom but dump them after 3 dates if they don't dtd.
I added the minimalist comment only because Carl lives way up north, where women are more minimalist, and I live down in the south, where it's very rare to see a woman in public without full makeup. It's a way I can reconcile the two opposing opinions without universally declaring that this is (yet again) a case where the men say one thing but are really lying to themselves.
Edit to add: Carl has long been highlighting how people say one thing and then do another, but somehow I don't think that's what you meant0 -

Even more clarification Carl lives in small town/country north not big city north.0 -
I wear red lipstick when I wear red...other wise my daily routine is powder foundation and concealer..that's it! It helps to work in a job that I'm wearing scrubs and a pony tail and my patients couldn't care less what I look like lol. I do like to make more of an effort going out..but still I'm no MAC make up counter girl lol0

I hate when guys say "I like a girl with no makeup." No, you mean that you like a girl who appears to look fresh faced but is wearing natural makeup.0 -

Listening to the guys where I live, I'm really beginning to suspect that they don't realize how much time/effort/makeup goes into the "natural look." Same with hair.0 -

In fairness if it is truly all they ever really see the majority of times how would they know a person is wearing any unless it was heavy enough to look like a fake skin?0 -
I love my red lipstick. I normally wear perma stains or long lasting smudge proof ones. I'm always getting compliments on it and I've never had a guy not kiss me cause of it. But then again I make sure they know it wont come off. FWB actually thought the reason my lipstick always looked so good was I was reapplying it everytime I went to the bathroom. Like I said in the other thread it will come off with extreme friction though it still wont show on the guy lol0

It might be hard to tell, but you can usually tell that a woman's eyelashes are darker, or her skin tone is even, or her eyes appear a little darker than normal.0 -

This guy would not be able to.
