Eat Like a Dinosaur

Since starting Primal on July 3, my kids have noticed that I am eating differently. When they get ice cream and ask why I don't, I say, "Mommy is eating like a caveman. Did cavemen eat ice cream? Nooooo." This cracks my boys up (easy to entertain a 3 and 4 year old!)

My four year old is now really paying attention to what I eat. Every meal. Every snack. And he calls me out if I stray.

"Did cavemen drink soda?" Um, no. But it's hard to break a diet coke habit. I'm trying.
"Did cavemen drink iced tea?" Well, sort of, yes. They probably soaked leaves and herbs, right?

He's also really paying attention to what foods he's eating now, and asks whether they're healthy or not. It doesn't stop him from eating sweets or ice cream (which my sugar addict hubby always has around). But, he knows they're not healthy.

So I bought the "Eating Like a Dinosaur" book by the Paleo Parents (www.paleoparents.com). Both boys are dying to cook some recipes from it, and I am too! This weekend we'll be eating like dinosaurs. For toddlers, they actually eat a good bit of veggies and meat... they love spinach, kale, chard, carrots, cukes, and iceberg lettuce. But they also love their mac and cheese and ice cream. I don't plan to force Paleo on the family, but hope that I can naturally replace some of their SAD meals with Paleo meals because they taste good.

And when I've lost my 20-25 pounds, I hope my husband will see the light and try it too.

Great post! The Fat-Burning Man podcast had a similar discussion yesterday. The guest, Isabel De Los Rios, is married and has young kids. She said it was difficult but she never badgered her husband to not eat this or to eat that. However, over the course of a few years, the husband began to see changes in her and pick up on her habits. I think leading by example is the way to go.

The best thing to do is to lead by example, whether its kids or spouses. Especially for the kids, since the earlier they pick up good habits, the more likely they'll care those lessons into the future. I think you are doing a great job and thank you for the inspiring post!

That looks like the coolest book! I don't have kids yet but when I do, I'm planning on raising them totally primal.. The best I can anyways

Kids are pretty adaptable, and monkey see monkey do. Certainly my 5 year old loves Paleo (try Paleo Pals for a good book too) and Eat Like a Dinosaur.

He eats what we do, he's not allowed dairy anyway so that was no great loss. He misses bread a bit but not much. Well done for getting them interested :)

I think I've made about half the recipes in ELAD and they've all been huge hits with my family. My 10 year old loves to pick out new recipes to make together. We've always eaten a more whole foods based diet, but it's definitely helping him transition more fully to paleo/primal.
