Primal Newbie

Hi everyone! I wanted to start a new topic because I didn't see an introduction thread for newcomers.
Anway, I've actually eased into Primal eating the past 2 months, gaging what foods I liked, didn't like (same for the bf) etc.
I then decided to "give it up" because I missed my Sunday morning pancakes. I've tried protein pancakes and they just aren't the same.
I also HATE COCONUT IN ALL FORMS WITH A PASSION lol. That's a pretty big staple. And sweet potatoes. And pork. So I felt like my options were limited.
After about a week, I missed it so here I am, kind of starting over. I can't wait to read everyone's tips and tricks of the trade!

You can make pancakes with almond flour if that agrees with you. Or gluten free grain flours if you want to make an exception.
I don't eat coconut or sweet potatoes, the fructans irritate my gut. My "safe starches" are winter squashes, yum!
I eat grass fed/ pastured meats, ORGANS!, eggs, fish, fermented vegetables, squashes.
Occasionally I eat low-fructose fruit, dark chocolate, wine, kombucha, and raw dairy.
I am trying to heal my gut with probiotics so "primal" things I avoid are: nightshades, non-fermented FODMAP vegetables, high fructose/fructan vegetables and fruits, nuts, seeds, and sugar of any kind. My diary is public.0 -
If you do dairy, I found a quick and easy pancake recipe.
2oz of Cream Cheese
2 eggs
1/4 tsp of cinnamon
Blend all three ingredients but make sure the cream cheese warms up a bit before you blend. Allow bubbles to settle, then pour into hot skillet. It should make about four pancakes.
I also hate coconut with a passion.0 -
You don't have to eat coconut.. Just eat other fruits, veggies and meats, not pork obviously if you don't like it, and no one is going to force sweet potatoes on you either. You can eat the "legal" foods you do like and not worry about the ones you don't.
You should look at it more like, would you rather give up pancakes or give up being healthy. Sure a
there are pancake alternatives as listed above, but try eating paleo/primal for a little while and you might find you don't even want those real pancakes anymore :-)0 -

It's true, I don't eat paleo baked goods at all. I only want them psychologically (dripping with butter and maple syrup in my mind). I'll just eat the butter with a spoon instead.0 -
I did notice last night that I haven't had, or even had the cravings for frozen yogurt, and I used to eat it at least once a week!
I can do dairy, but I have been able to cut back a lot, and when i do cheese, I do a richer, high quality cheese.
I'll try almond flour, I've seen it, just haven't picked any up becuse it's pretty pricey.
I mostly just stick to meat, veggies, some fruits and eggs as well. I've never gone through so many eggs in my life, I think that the farmer should give me a discount lol.
Have any of you done the 21 Day Transformation by Mark Sisson? I just started reading it!0 -
I actually kinda started with the 21 day transformation. I went to a live seminar and got the book.
When it came to the actual "21 days" I did not follow that format.
I pretty much just went cold turkey, but reading the book gave me the understanding and the inspiration.
For me it was much more about why I should or shouldn't eat certain things rather than "these are forbidden".
Having that solid understanding makes this much more of a lifestyle than a diet. And makes maintenance that much easier.
I do/will/have cheated but it is limited to a weekend date night and my cheats are a creme brulee or the occasional legume etc.
I was a HUGE pancake fan. Goes back to my childhood and some of the best Sunday mornings were mom making stacks for the whole family. Sure I can make alternatives - but then I'm just tricking myself. And besides, without all the syrup it isn't as satisfying.
I find that if I don't eat the grains - I don't miss them or desire them.. but if I indulge, it is a very slippery slope.
funny side note: when I started this, I was told probably 3 times, "Oh I know I guy that did that, it worked great but he gained it all back the minute he stopped"... Um, doesn't that tell you something? I laughed, "then why would he EVER put grains back into his diet".0 -
I think a lot of foods that other people swear by are gross. You just have to do what works for you. Mushrooms aren't allowed in my kitchen, I think chicken is largely vile (though I will sometimes eat it) and I dissect things to remove all traces of fat, skin or connective tissue. Marrow and organ meat are nasty and I don't anticipate developing a taste for them anytime soon.
But I don't *have* to eat any of those things. I eat a lot of eggs, fish, ground animal (beef, turkey, bison) and random vegetables.
Past week or so has been crap, but I haven't been near a grocery store except to order wedding cakes (got a flourless chocolate cake for us!). Sigh. At least the cafeteria at work is awesome and I had a bacon tomato omelet this morning. With a side of bacon. Next couple of days will be okay-- more primal, but eh. It's what is working at the moment since families are families.0 -
I just finished Mark's Primal Blueprint 21-Day Transformation.. I am also doing my own version of the 21 days

It's so great to read about everyone's start.
I actually don't like syrup, but LOVEEEE raw honey on some blueberry pancakes. But you are right, I mostly just love the comfort and routine of it. And even thought I miss pancakes, I haven't even bought pancakes mix. Weird! I bought chips and made salsa.. and haven't even eaten any!
I do find it very hard to shake ::sigh:: fried foods, like wings and french fries (my fav thing everrrr). Did everyone find it more difficult to shake those?
What I love about this lifestyle is that there are so many more OPTIONS when you go out to eat with friends and workers. Eat an enitre plate of fajita meat and veggies- that's not deprivation at all!
What do you guys set your macros too on here? I am at 83g carbs (though trying to stay more towards 75) 51g fat and 132g protein. Or does it really even matter other than carbs?0 -
I started the lifestyle in stages. First, I gave up sugar and HFCS. Did that for several months until I plateaued. Then I found out about eating Primal. I just gave up grains, and lost almost 10 lbs. Then I read Mark's book Primal Blueprint, and found out what my carb and protein should be and have been focusing on perfecting that. It was easier for me to do it this way, because it was one thing at a time, not everything all at once.0

liveto..
yes and no on the macros. I kinda set them - but since I'm not counting calories they don't mean anything.
I watch my carbs to be under 50 when I want to lose - around 75-100 to maintain.
I make sure I'm eating 120-160g of protein each day - and also making sure I'm getting enough fat.
So some days I'm way high on my protein and fat and my total calories are through the roof.
My new move is ordering something like a salad with chicken on it and always doubling the protein. "double chicken, charge me anything you want" always gets a good laugh, and people are blown away at the volume of food I am eating - and in their mind, all I did was skip the crappy bread they put on the table to start. (they usually only add a buck or two)
I will still get the french fry craving - BUT, without ketchup I don't feel as bad. When I'm dying for something crunchy, I eat a bag of pork rinds
