  • July 3, 7,200 steps. In our state, hiking trails, forest preserves and city trails are open so we're planning on doing as much of those as we can.
  • Happy to be here for another month! I'm also delighted to accept friend requests. I've become active on the McDougall Friends page on FB. Something I love about McDougall folks, and most plant folks is how welcoming they are. It is very hot here...well into the 90s, and I'm have a couple of slips into oat milk ice cream…
  • Steps: 7/02: The strategy of going out early worked, plus having an errand scheduled for after 3 p.m. so 12,869 steps today.
  • Steps 7289. Still in the 90s here with lots of sun, so I've founded that sunrise is around 5:30 and sunset at 8:30, so planning my day around early a.m. walk and after sunset stroll as well. Today there was a battle between a peanut butter sandwich on thick homemade bread (our son is an aspiring pastry chef) and something…
  • June 30th: 8640 steps in 92 degree heat, so I'm both proud and feel hot and sweaty. Not loving what I ate today (I'm happy to accept any friend request...so feel free to send me one. ) My calories were fine, but oh, only 10% of what I ate had the remotest amount of nutritional value!
  • 6/29 steps: 4,250
  • Thank you for the clarification. I'm good with everything! Thanks for being so patient with me as I get the knack. This week my goal is to eat anything I eat at the dining room table. I find my least satisfying eating is done away from the table when I'm not really focusing on what I'm eating, but on watching a movie,…
  • Weigh in: Sunday Today weight: 148 PW: 151 It is in the high 80s and humid here so my steps were lower than average: 5,000. My goal is to get up early and get my steps in before it becomes uncomfortably hot. Delighted to be part of the group, and bear with me as I get accustomed to the format, et al. Thanks!
  • Thank you for the welcome, and looking forward to being part of the team!
  • OP: If you're still following this discussion there are a number of very good, supportive Dr. McD groups on FB. Take care.
  • What a nice group! May I join? Thanks!
  • Food Addicts Anonymous has a daily phone meeting schedule. No one is required to speak, you don't have to join anything. The schedule is updated periodically so you'd have to check their website, but I find these calls really helpful. Just knowing I'm going to hear the voices of others who struggle with the same issue can…
  • That's very insightful. I'm going to make a commitment to weighing and measuring my food as well!
  • We can still go out in my state, just not congregate in groups of 10 or more, and keep social distance. Our son and I are taking sidewalk chalk and writing: Hang in there. by our local parks. It helps us get out of the house, and we just feel like we are doing a little to make things better.
  • Schools in my state are closed, and restaurants will be for the next two weeks. I'm viewing this like a challenge, to stay on track despite having more going on and more to think/plan (we're vegetarians...so suddenly we have to strategize about where to get tofu!). Last week I stayed the same. This week, continue to track.…
  • Congratulations...and I love the look on the minister's face like: Folks this one's a keeper!
  • Yes, I started Weight Watchers this year and I suspect that many of the other attendees wonder why I'm there. I'm actually slimmer than our leader. I'd like to drop a few lbs for athletics, but primarily I'm there to finally develop a healthy relationship with food.
  • I would add the above regarding rowing..watch a few professional videos on form. Rowing was recommended to me after I completed physical therapy for a broken arm/dislocated shoulder and the physical therapist showed me the correct form...which is a lot different from what I see more frequently at the gym!
  • I think addictions are tough to break because they do make us feel good...I loved smoking, absolutely loved it. Never thought about the consequences. I have friends who are destructively heavy drinkers...and they love alcohol. I think where it starts to hurt is when it becomes the only way that we rely upon to make…
  • I can't seem to add to the above, so I'll add here: I think the popular image of a food addict is someone who is visibly overweight. I'm not. I'd like to lose some vanity lbs, and to be a better athlete, but I'm not visibly overweight. However, what people don't see is the amount of time I have spent thinking about food,…
  • Definitely. I find, like the people in Food Addicts Anonymous, that any form of flour or sugar sends me into a binge spiral. While the program isn't one that I've adopted, I find that the fewer processed foods I eat the more food has an appropriate place in my life. The more processed foods..and so many of these have flour…
  • I find it is easier for me to eliminate than to balance. I don't eat meat/fish/poultry, my dairy is skim milk in an occasional Starbucks latte or some Halo once a week. By and large, I don't eat sweets. I have a dessert once a month, and my favorite dessert is pie. With all these eliminations you'd think that I was slim,…
  • I binge to self-soothe when I'm emotionally distraught. It seems that during those times all the other self-care techniques I've found successful over the years (warm bath, a long walk, talking to a friend) are of limited use. There's something about being full of the point of pain that gets my mind off whatever is…
  • Adding: I'm also reducing my screentime. One of my life goals is to do more which gives me joy...and screen is something I've spent too much of my life just getting sucked into...
  • Down .4, I'll take it! This week, I'm pre planning my calories for each meal snack. I've tried meticulously planning my food, but there's something about that total restriction that is too much for me now (maybe in the future, don't count it out!). Something else I'm changing: A treat once a day. I'm pretty much off sugar…
  • I do both, but if I had to chose I would go for more walking (which I can fit into my day without thinking about going to the gym) and weight training. We all lose muscle as we age, and since muscle is what burns fat more efficiently, building more muscle is a win/win both in terms of reshaping the body and burning…
  • Thank you!
  • You know, I think it might be a woman thing. No one has ever commented on my husband's appearance, but when I meet someone the second or third comment is about my appearance.... BTW, I'm seeking some MFP friends for peer support, so please send me a friend request!
  • Jillian Michaels has a very short YouTube video on this...basically your body feels pretty healthy at this range and is going to be more reluctant to release more lbs (she says this with a lot more emphasis...) So, I guess the good news is that we're all pretty healthy, the less good news is cause of this our bodies need…
  • 125 to 130. I got to that number by eating lots of veggies/some fruits, moderate amounts of whole grains and adequate protein. I find that the healthier I eat the more naturally the scale drops and the better I feel. So, while that's the number it is really the feeling I get when I do the right things to get to that…
