Didn't know I could run or lift until I started in my 40s! Now all my real life friends are whining about getting old and fat and falling apart while I'm in the best shape of my life. Would love to have a few more "old" friends who enjoy the same things that I do.

Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride and Candy Cane Lane by Celestial Seasonings are in my cabinet right now! I also have Peppermint Bark and Eggnogg'n by Bigelow. I discovered those last year and I'm stocking up so I have enough to get through the winter! With a little milk and Splenda they're like dessert for me.

I second the link above. I use a very similar recipe from America's test kitchen and I like it WAY better than slow cooker steel cut oats (my slow cooker scorches them - even on warm).

I got one from my mother in law last Christmas. I was afraid it would end up in the appliance purgatory in the basement, but I love it and use it several times a week. Veggies, potatoes, spagetti squash, rice, roasts, chops, almost everything. I highly recommend the Americas Test Kitchen Pressure Cooker Perfection book.…

I've been lifting over a year now. Just got my own gym set up and loving it!

Puppy chow or Muddy Buddies. Easy, no bake, and you can easily portion into decorated zip bags.

Which almond milk do you use? All of the ones I've seen around here only have a gram or so of protein per cup, as opposed to cow's milk, which has 9 grams per cup.

If I bring a Lean Cuisine or other frozen meal for lunch, I make sure I pack a salad or veggies to go with it. They aren't very filling, and are generally light on the veggies anyway. If it is low on protein, I'll bring a side of cottage cheese, boiled egg, or a 100 cal greek yogurt to help round it out.

I tried the local store 12 weeks before my half marathon. They didn't carry my size and said they would order for me. I waited 4 weeks and never heard from them. Stopped in to check, got a "maybe next week." Waited two more weeks and still nothing, so I bought some at the outlet mall for half the price. They called two…

Hearing this always depresses me at first - then I remind myself that it also works the other way. If I SKIP that extra slice of bread, or the piece of cheese, or the Ritz crackers I can gradually lose a few pounds, too. Just like walking 10-15 minutes 4 or 5 times a day is just as good as that 45-60 walk I "don't have…

Skim milk has more protein - so I generally prefer that. I usually only use almond or coconut milk when I'm running low on calories but have had enough protein for the day.

This pretty much covers it. I am not training for anything currently, so I'm running 20-25 miles per week to keep a decent base in addition to weight training. My main runs are about an hour at a steady pace, but I mix in a long slow run once a week and one or two short fast runs. If I'm feeling good, I try for a 10k pr…

We get the Columbus Herb Roasted turkey from Costco all the time. I like it because it's low in calories, high in protein, and good quality (it's not that mashed up turkey "loaf" stuff). As far as healthy, I guess that depends on what you consider healthy. If you need to watch your sodium you might want to limit how much…

I have almost the exact same routine. When I started training for a half this spring I had to drop SL down to 3x5 two days per week. I'm back up to 3 days now, but kept SL at 3x5 and haven't had any issues with recovery running 20ish miles per week even though I have my squats over body weight and DL almost 1.5 bw. But I…

I don't remember where I heard it, but the simplest explanation for the term "genetic predisposition" I've heard is "genetics loads the gun, lifestyle pulls the trigger."

I'm a rebel. I use Muesli instead of oats. Love the texture and flavor from the different grains, nuts & dried fruits.

What exactly is the difference between that and soda? Isn't anything that is sweetened and cabonated a soda? Those "Ice" beverages are flavoring, sweetener and carbonated water. Just like diet coke or 7up. And green tea is nice, but has no special benefit over any other source of caffiene. There is nothing wrong with…

This recipe is really easy, and even with my kid who doesn't like sweet potatoes loves it: Really Easy Slow Cooker Mixed Bean Chili 1 can black beans, drained & rinsed 1 can pinto beans, drained & rinsed 1 can corn, drained (or frozen corn if preferred) 1 large sweet potato, cut into 1/2" pieces 1 jar of your favorite…

I guess it depends on your definition of rest. I alternate lifting 3 days and running 3 days then rest on Sunday. But even on rest day I try to get at least 15,000 walking steps.

I do the same thing! Especially when I see something new I want to try. Sometimes I corner the kids when they have one so I can try a bite to see if a whole piece will be "worth" the calories.

I used to only get them if they were doing it free at work. Then I got the flu and was down hard for a week, and took a good month the feel human again. Now I get them every year. I did get the flu 2 years ago, even though I had the shot, but I recovered much more quickly than the previous time I had the flu. The 3…

I have an inexpensive rec center under a mile from my house and a gym at my office about 100 feet from my desk but I'm setting up a home gym right now for several reasons. The rec center is closed most government holidays, no wifi, one functioning tube TV that gets one station, is open limited hours, and has limited staff…

My rule of thumb is dress how you would when the weather is 10 degrees warmer but you are not running. Like for 40-50's I'd run with a long sleeve shirt and longish tights. If I wasn't running, I'd wear that for 50-60 degree weather. For 30-40 degree runs, I's add a light jacket or pullover, like I would when out at 50-60…

My go-tos are sandwiches and salads when it's warmer. I keep spinach, lettuce, broccoli slaw, berries, cucumbers, peppers, radishes, snap peas and any other veggies that look good or on special on hand. I get the big package of pre-cooked rotisserie chicken breast from Costco and portion into servings and put in the…

Not surprised in the slightest. I can gain 3-4 pounds if I eat back all the calories from a long run.
-
If you are concerned about sodium, you're better off with regular chicken breast, not chicken lunch meat. You can cook it yourself or I sometimes buy precooked rotisserie chicken breast from Costco for convenience. (It's higher in sodium than homemade, but much less than lunch meat). That being said, unless you have a…

Flip Belt. Even has a clip to make sure your keys don't slip out. Love mine!

Ha! I'm actually considering asking one them to hook up my refrigerator. He's always helping them out with their projects. Time to return the favor.

I just drink when I'm thirsty. There's no set amount that anyone "needs". It varies from person to person, day to day depending on activity, weather, how much water is in what you eat and tons of other factors. Just keep in simple and drink when you're thirsty. That's how we're designed. (And i never did figure out those…

I tend to shop sales & clearance racks and outlets. For tops I'm not too picky. But I do adore my Victoria's secret bras. Not because I need the support, but because I need the shape so I don't look like a 12 year old boy. The VS tights are also great for giving nice shape to my saggy, middle-aged bottom. And they hold up…
