  • To OP: I've been reasonably consistent with my weight loss since I started last October. I am not sure I really have any tricks to share, it has all been about accuracy and consistency for me. I found the number I of calories I should eat to lose 1lb per week (and since I got lighter roughly 1lb every 10days), I counted my…
  • I'm 5'5'' and around 165 as well (163 just before My Easter break and 165 just after it). I started at 185 back in October. My first goal is 155, my ultimate goal maybe 145. Please feel free to add me
  • Enjoy the dinner, eat in moderation, log the calories, continue as usual. Call it a celebration, and not a cheat meal.

  • Exactly! For me it was something similar - not giving any thought to maintenance. That's why this time it will be different! I have learned a lot about how many calories my body needs as a minimum (can't go below about 1,400 as I feel awful), how many calories my body needs to lose close to 1 lb. a week (about 1,550) and…
  • If things like tea and coffee didn't count as water, I'd be dead. Most of my liquid intake is from green tea, as I drink a lot of it at work. I rarely drink water. I personally don't count coffee as water only because I drink small strong European style coffees, but most American style coffee, tea, even soup, fruit, salad,…
  • 20 lbs is fantastic loss! I've now lost about 22 lbs (I'm shorted than you and went from 185 to 163), and I am really only starting to look noticeably different. But I feel so much better! The main difference is walking up or down stairs - it's so much easier. Walking in general is also easier - while I've always been a…
  • Wow, you really like your coffee sweet! I use artificial sweeteners without any qualms, particularly in soft drinks as I don't like to drink my calories. But I only use about 1/3 of a packet in my coffee, I just need a hint of sweetness - I do the same with packets of sugar. 8 packets sounds unthinkably sweet!
  • You may want to spend some time learning the basics of nutritional value for various foods, to increase your confidence in making the judgment of whether the calorific value you find is plausible or not. For legumes, rice, pasta, and other foods that soak up water when cooked, the crucial difference is whether you are…
  • I just bought a big bundle of clothes (I think 7 dresses, a jacket and a top) on eBay - they are all by the same brand whose sizing I'm familiar with, so I am reasonably confident they'll fit. Together they cost less than one new dress from that shop would have cost.
  • It is frustrating, and fascinating at the same time. I've seen so many people whose starting weight, where there feel horrible about themselves, is lower than even my goal weight. I'm only just over half way to my goal weight and already feel great.
  • I generally like to eat rather than drink calories, and my protein intake is fine, so I rarely drink milk on its own, even though I love it (semi skimmed, at room temmperature...). I enjoy semi skimmed milk every morning and afternoon with my coffee, as I love coffee but hate the way it tastes without milk. Every now and…
  • I weigh everything at home, except sometimes small side servings of salad leaves or raw spinach, where the margin of error is negligible. I got used to doing it quickly, it only takes a few minutes a day, and it's been so liberating to be able to eat everything in moderation and only restrict calories. Every time I weigh…
  • I am sure you are saying this with good intentions, but it's very dangerous to tell someone recovering from an eating disorder that they are eating more than they think (they'd be more likely to eat even less than they think). This could easily trigger them into eating even less, as they can interpret it as "you need to…
  • That's really such a disingenuous way of calculating percentage protein. First of all, it's not comparing like for like. He is showing vegetables and pulses in their pure form, but he picked two meats that are not pure meats but rather meat dishes containing meat, sauces etc. If you take something like grilled chicken…
  • Broccoli has more protein than most meats? That's so untrue, it's laughable. Where did you get that idea from? (Apologies for digressing your thread, OP, but I wanted to challenge bad advice)

  • I was going to say the same thing. Eating at a 1,000 calories a day deficit (which is the deficit required to lose 2 lbs per week) is hard. It's simple, but it's hard. Studying for an exam is hard. It may be too much happening at once. Obviously, your choice to make.
  • Oh, also - if you are synching your Fitbit and MFP, remember to enter in both that you aim to lose 1 lb per week. Also, one thing to note is that MFP tells you how many calories you have for the day in total, while Fitbit makes predictions for the day based on your current expenditure. So say you've just completed a two…
  • 11000 steps plus cycling is a decent amount of exercise and would certainly allow you to eat a bit more. I'm a 5'5'' woman, 40 years old, currently weighing 165 or so lbs, measuring my calorie expenditure with my Fitbit. If I am completely sedentary (say at home with a flu) I'll use about 1,600 calories. I use about 2,000…
  • Losing weight on a diet without giving any thoughts at all to maintenance. Unsurprisingly, all the weight came back as soon as I quit my diet.
  • I have a large frame. Not shoulders - my shoulders are distinctly average - but I am of very stocky build, with short limbs. My back is very long, so when I'm sitting down, I'm easily as tall as most 6 ft men, and I'm a 5 foot 5 woman. So of course I'm built to be heavier than someone who is long limbed. That's why my aim…
  • I am 5 foot 5, about 167 lbs now, losing weight (up to 1lb per week) eating1,500-1,600 calories a day. I always say I would last a day on 1,200. Moderate loss over longer time works perfectly fine.
  • Good luck on your journey from another Tanja! I just sent you a friend request.
  • My only exercise is walking, averaging about 8,000 steps a day, usually more on weekends. And of course that walking burns calories, compared to being completely sedentary. I've set my activity level to sedentary and I sync my Fitbit to MFP and I eat most of my calories back, and I've been losing fine. I'm a 40 year old…
  • Isn't edamame and soy exactly he same thing? Or possibly edamame are soy beans before they are dried. I tried them and liked them - but then I like food which is chewy in weird ways. My husband found the consistency a bit off-putting.
  • Good luck! I just wanted to add this: I am the same height, and I was pretty much the same weight when I started my diet back in October (185). I am now at about 168 lbs and already feel so much better. I think focusing on getting rid of your excess weight one pound at a time would be a better mindset than focusing on…
  • Yo sushi have full nutritional info for all their dishes on their website, and I think even on the paper menus in their restaurants. You should be able to track exactly how much you are eating.
  • For comparison, I'm 40, 5'5'', I do an average of about 8000 steps a day and no other exercise, starting weight was 185 lbs. I eat about 1,500 to 1,600 a day (and I eat more and walk more on weekends) and I have been losing a steady 1lb per week. I wouldn't last a day on 1,200 calories.
  • I walk on average about 7000-9000 steps a day, which brings my calorie expenditure to about 2100 calories a day on average. I don't do any other exercise, other than regular stretching exercises at home. I set my activity level to sedentary, and I measure my step count through my Fitbit. If I'm completely sedentary, for…
  • I have very similar stats to you (40 yrs old, starting weight 185 lbs, current 168 or so - losing steadily 1 lb per week on abou 1500-1600 calories a day). I wouldn't last a day on 1200.
  • What you have to lose if you eat so little and exercise so much is frankly your ability to stick to your diet. Because you'll likely end up starving, and this will increase your chances of abandoning your diet. If you eat back some of your exercise calories, you have more chance of succeeding on the long run - and it's all…
