  • That is a great blog. Thanks for the link. And the last photo looks like dinner.
  • Way to mess up my plans for the day kirkor! I followed the link read a bit then downloaded his 140 page pdf. Read a bit of that then followed a link to a PhD thesis from Australia. Got back to the pdf and read a bit more before following another great link. Kept reading during lunch, bad habit. I now realize it's 2:30 PM…

  • I haven't been as active posting lately but I agree. I check in daily and read what has been posted and it helps me stay on track. I'll be 70 in three weeks and I've spent at least 4 hours in the past 2 weeks removing snow from my sidewalk and driveway. Not bad for a formerly fat T2 who could barely climb the four steps to…
  • There is a lot to chew on there but worth the read.
  • I find all of the different preferences interesting. I was a black coffee drinker for my adult life. I am also a person who keeps very regular hours. For years my wife's alarm ha gone off at 5:30 AM on weekdays. I always awoke just in time to hear the relay click just before the alarm sounded. I got up, started the coffee,…
  • Interesting, I have not seen on MFP but I usually run that on a Win 10 notebook. I have seen something similar on an Android tablet on a different ap and on a netbook (Win 7 upgraded to Win 10) while using the Chrome browser. I try to keep everything updated but for a 2 person household we have his & hers notebooks, his &…
  • Great read, Thanks
  • I use the Walmart house brand plain whole milk Greek yogurt usually mixed with nuts and cinnamon. After reading this I think I will try with unsweetened cocoa powder & nuts,
  • As a T2 diabetic controlling my blood glucose with diet without diabetes medication that would be a definite NO. If I keep my blood glucose in the 90's Monday-Saturday and then bump it to 120-150 on Sunday that's a few more nerve cells and blood vessels damaged in my toes and fingers. I've grown fond of my toes over the…
  • I just got back from my wife's service awards dinner, 30 years with the hospital. Crappy banquet food most of which I didn't eat. I got home and ate 2 cheese sticks, 1/4 cup of nuts and 2 glasses of wine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2H5uWRjFsGc

  • Stephie, I joined this group about the same time as you, January 2015. I lurked for a bit before posting so I don't know the exact date. I have to echo the things you said. I've gone from a guy who could barely climb the four steps to my front door to one who averages 20 flights of stairs per day often carrying a…

  • I'll be brutal. Are bananas worth the loss of your feet or vision? I'll be even more brutal, for many diabetics the realization of that choice comes only after it is too late. I was handed the diagnosis of T2 diabetes in 2014 when I had a lab test with a fasting BG reading of 126. That was after several years of readings…
  • Diabetes can be a very individual disease. I find that I am best off avoiding foods that cause a rise in either insulin or blood glucose. When I first started "eating to my meter" (2014) a whole wheat pasta dinner would spike my blood glucose from 120's to 140-150's and a white pasta dinner would spike into the 160-170's.…
  • 1 cup is listed at 9 grams. My normal serving is 1/2 cup plus about 1/2 cup of nuts with a generous seasoning of cinnamon. Probably about half as many carbs from the nuts. I'm not super low carb. I'm happy if my weight maintains and my 2 hour post meal blood glucose stays in the 90s.
  • I live in central New York only a few miles from the Chobani factory but my yogurt of choice is the Great Value brand of Whole Milk Plain Greek Yogurt from Walmart. Its ingredient list is short: whole milk, live cultures. Chobani is also good but they make it by culturing skim milk and adding back cream. I prefer the…
  • For a long time I fretted that MFP wasn't counting the first 5 pounds I lost. It also bothered me that it couldn't track net carbs vs total carbs. I finally realized that what is important is: can I climb a flight of stairs w/o pain and is my diabetes under control? The most meaningful metric seems to be: how do my pants…
  • Energy can also be supplied by ketone bodies. The amount of carbs you can process depends on the amount of insulin your body can produce and how efficiently it can be used. Excess blood glucose will cause damage to blood vessels and nerves cells which is cumulative and irreversible.
  • Don't confuse ketosis with ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis is a condition usually found in Type I diabetics or very late stage Type 2's in which the feedback loop which normally controls the production of ketones is broken and uncontrolled levels of ketone bodies build up in the blood. From Mosby's Medical Dictionary "acidosis…
  • When I was first diagnosed I found this site to be useful. phlaunt.com/diabetes/ One of the items discussed is why your blood glucose reading may be higher in the morning than at bedtime. It's not uncommon. There are a number of different strategies for when to test in order to get a complete picture of what is happening…
  • That is absolutely super!. Well done on every count.
  • Of course the number of calories per pound depend on whether it is a pound of fat, protein or water. There are a lot of moving parts.
  • My doctor, WebMD and the NIH all say fasting is not necessary for a1c tests. The exception might be if you have other tests at the same time. When my doc gives orders for lab work they always clearly state if fasting is necessary. I think that should be a standard of practice.
  • Post mortem: My sister-in-law hosted a family get together for 18-20 people. During the pre-meal "snacking" phase I had to make a couple adaptions. My older daughter had just returned from working at a mission in Guatemala with a couple of exotic jellies. One was cocoa beans and spices, the other with non-roasted coffee…
  • I guess that's an ample demonstration of my proofreading skills. In the words of Emily Litella, "That's different, never mind."
