I had gestational diabetes with two pregnancies and am now considered pre-diabetic/insulin resistant. I had it under control for a long time but gained a lot of weight and am having to go back to low-carb to control my glucose levels. I can only hit my protein goals by eating animal protein. Looking at a 14.5 oz can of…

What about when your exercise calories up your protein intake? I eat mine back and would anyway because I'm hungry all the time, but my protein macro will go from 90 to 120 just based on my Fitbit readings. What do those of you not eating back do about your increased macros? Ignore them? Or maybe I need to change my…

Everyone says ellipticals are low-impact and therefore better for your knees, but they make mine hurt. I love my treadmill. It's over 100 where I am so I'm all about the a/c and tv is a huge plus. I get hooked on a series and off I go. I mix up inclines and speeds so I feel like I get a good workout.

I was asking if anyone else had done under 20 long term because for me that's hard to do day in and day out. At this point I'm able to control my levels entirely with diet, and the lower I keep my carb counts the better I do. Meals that clock 20-25 do barely nudge me, but like I wrote, I find that hard to sustain long…

I have to say, to the OP or whomever, I found the only way I could get my meals to under 20 carbs consistently was to not eat any fruit or dairy, or very little. To me that doesn't seem sustainable or healthy, although there are plenty of people who think otherwise. Has anyone here kept it to under 20 per meal long term?

I thought the new thinking was that cardiovascular disease is caused by inflammation. All I know is my cholesterol numbers improved by 20+ points--bad down, good ch up--when I went to a higher fat diet. But not lots of hot dogs or whatever, red meat yes but also good oils, etc. When I went back to more refined carbs and…

Paleo is just Nourishing Traditions without the raw dairy. Nourishing Traditions is just Atkins with an "eat like the native peoples" spin, SoBeach is a more glamorous Atkins with more fish. There's nothing new here, whole foods/clean eating/blah blah they're all essentially just a low carb high fat diet.

Diabetes 101 is another good book. I got off insulin and my levels under control with diet--high fat low carb like others are saying. For me personally that has and had the greatest effect--more than exercise, supplements or weight loss. I also exercise but for me keeping low depends on eating less than 45 carbs per meal…

I've gotten leg cramps in my sleep, they're straight-up awful and can make me wake up screaming. Thanks to google I now take Natural Calm Magnesium with Calcium powder--I put some in my water bottle for every workout and it does the trick. You can get it at Amazon or Sprouts or Whole Foods. Try it, it worked for me…

I love Zumba World Party on the Wii. You wear a controller on your waist that tracks your movements for points. When you set it up you enter your height/weight/sex/age and then it tracks your workouts and calorie burns. You can make a custom workout or choose between 20, 40 and 60 minute workouts, medium or high intensity.…

Wait, not to hijack, but this: But you aren't sedentary if working out 2 hrs weekly. That is clearly Lightly Active. Be honest with yourself. from heybales--I thought exercise level was based on your entire day, not on your exercise. No? I'm sedentary except when I'm exercising, but that's only 1 hr of my day, the rest of…

I'm so happy to read these replies. I was getting discouraged reading other threads where people said they were full on 1350 calories and/or had a hard time eating up to that or more. I exercise just to eat back the calories and I'm hungry pretty much all of the time. If I didn't exercise and ate the 1250 that MFP rec's…

I'm having a PF flare up right now but I can still do Zumba--just try to find something that is low impact, and make sure you wear good shoes while you're doing it. When I'm having a flare up I have to wear shoes with support every waking moment or I'll have pain. I have "indoor shoes" just for around the house. Also, make…

I agree that some will make you gain weight--I had one type that made me crazy hungry and when I demanded a switch (had to demand because they wouldn't believe it was the pill) the issue went away, no weight gain. I think it was OrthoNovum that worked, but it was a long time ago. I'd tell your doc your concerns about…

I believe author Dr. Michael Mosley was the first to use the phrase "intermittent fasting" and he used the adjective intermittent because he was still ingesting 500 calories or less. Otherwise it'd just be fasting. To the OP, I got his book at the library after hearing him on NPR, it gives some interesting info. I love IF…

I read the IF guy's book and liked it, and try to fast at least one day a week by his guidelines (less than 500 cals a day). IMO the insulin effects aren't a big deal, because of course your levels are going to be lower if you haven't ingested any carbs for a while. So for someone like me with sugar issues, I may fast and…

I log full fat milk with my coffee and the almond milk with my cereal daily. I measure both and try to limit myself to a cup of dairy a day because it's such a calorie hog and it messes with my sugar levels. If I drink more coffee I cut the milk w/ almond milk to save calories, but yuck, I really prefer milk or half/half.…

Thank you both, that's helpful info and very reassuring!
