At any given time you may have as much as 20 pounds of stuff in your gut. When you restrict your diet that number goes down, but when you slip up and start stuffing in food more quickly than it is coming out the weight goes up. While this also translates into fat gain, the amount of fat gained is far less than the weight…

Sorry, but day-to-day weight changes are almost always "water weight." Yes, technically, you could lose as much as a quarter of a pound of fat per day, but it won't be visible on the scale because normal fluctuations are so much more significant. Personally, I see no value in weighing daily. Once or twice a week is plenty.

If you are on your feet all day, you should have indicated that when determining your activity level. You should be logging the four workouts, after which MFP will add calories to your goal, so on days you work out you should be eating more than the 1200 anyway.

Since we're venting: I lost over a pound last week and I wasn't trying to. Back in October I started tracking calories again because my weight had gone up. I stopped tracking after I got back to my goal weight. Now I'm farther under than I intended to get and I've got the whole Summer in front of me. I usually lose weight…

Here's a way to measure appropriate portion sizes without carrying a scale everywhere: http://www.webmd.com/diet/healthtool-portion-size-plate

There are approximately 37.2 trillion cells in the human body and each one is making decisions independently while at the same time working in coordination with the other cells. A lot of the communication involved is through the blood stream. The bloodstream carries both the "fuel" and the oxygen your body needs. When the…

The theory is that since a measured cup of flour may weigh a different amount than another measured cup of flour that measuring with cups is inaccurate. The irony is that the people who make this claim never demonstrate that two cups of flour that weigh the same have the same number of calories in them. There is actually…

Perhaps you would be better off taking a college biology course rather than asking your questions on a forum. But let me give you the Reader's Digest version: If you move more you burn more. Having more muscle means you will burn more even while sitting still, but to get more muscle requires you to move more. Fat people…

Weight loss isn't linear, so in that sense it is real. But some of the explanations for why it happens are complete nonsense.

I drink a lot of coffee. I drink little else and have never experienced this dehydration they speak of. It would be interesting to see how thick the coffee would have to be for someone to experience dehydration from drinking coffee. I suspect it would have to have the consistency of mud.

Just when I thought we had finally put this thing to bed it pops up again. Personally, I don't find this "ideal" at all. It makes far too many assumptions and doesn't take into account that people are different sizes with different goals. There's a huge difference between someone whose goal weight is 95lbs and someone with…

You were never intended to eat just 1200 calories when you go to the gym. MFP is designed to add exercise calories to your goal for a good reason. When you burn more calories you need to eat more, but as long a you keep your calorie deficit the same you will lose weight at the same rate.
-
Yes, clearly you are not. So take whatever you are eating and eat less than that for a few weeks and you'll be there.
-
My motivation was what I saw when I stepped on the scale. That and fact that I was getting out of breath just walking up stairs.

How do you come up with "Not eating enough" when you aren't losing weight? If you are burning 2000 calories a day and you aren't losing weight then it seems that you are eating that much in healthy food.
-
I find it interesting that people would log coffee and tea differently than they do plain water. If you swallow some dry instant coffee crystals and then drink a cup of hot water, your body can't tell a difference from putting the crystals in a cup of hot water and drinking that.

Have you heard of daylight savings time? Just reset your clocks to whatever time of day is ideal for weight loss and eat. (Sorry, I couldn't resist.) It seems to me that rules about when you shouldn't eat such as no eating after 7pm have more to do with what people are doing at various times than anything else. A lot of…

There's no such thing a negative calorie foods. (Well, maybe hay since we don't have multiple stomachs and the ability to chew our cud.) Many of the foods in the list have quite high sugar content and some varieties have extremely high sugar content.

If you "cheat" then it will take you longer to reach your goal because your calorie deficit is smaller. But you're the one setting the goal. It is up to you to decide whether you want to get there more slowly or not.

I'm sure it adds to ones calorie burn, but so do twiddling your thumbs. Personally, I have a hard enough time on Zwift while trying to watch YouTube. I hate to think what it would be like if I were trying to be productive.

There's no way I would be able to log calories from now on. I weigh myself weekly and as long as I'm within five pounds of my target weight I don't log food calories. That's not to say that I don't pay attention to calories and go completely off of intuition. I think more in terms of a calorie goal at each meal. At each…

Using a food scale helps some people because it makes it harder for them to inflate their portion sizes. I use one for some things, such as when measuring out nuts or pancake mix, but I'm not a fan of saying that people should use them for everything. I see a couple of problems with food scales. One is that while they give…

With you losing an average of 2 lbs a week, I don't think you have anything to be concerned about. As was mentioned above, the calories you are reporting don't match up. There are plenty here who will disagree with me on this but at the end of the day it doesn't matter whether you are eating more than you think, burning…

The best exercise is the one you do, but since excess weight put more strain on the joints it seems like exercises like swimming and cycling that put less strain on the joints are better for weight loss. As a person nears their goal they might consider taking up other activities.

I don't understand why someone would have a problem with sedentary. If you are trying to lose weight, there is no advantage to trying to argue against terminology. The truth will reveal itself on the scale eventually. I don't think the chances of success are very good here.

It's okay to talk to yourself, as long as you don't respond.

For dealing with "skinny fat" problems, any exercise that gets your heart rate up will help, but since the primary thing you're trying to do is to exercise the heart I would look at cardio. Swimming and cycling are viable options for anyone, but since excess weight straining the joints isn't an issue running is a much more…

Coffee is like chocolate. It is practically a health food if you don't load it down with sugar. Caffeine can aid your workouts by giving you a boost of energy and coffee is source of potassium, which most of us need more of.

As you lose weight you need less, so there is no reason to think that decreasing your calories moderately as you go along will make you any more hungry.

Hypnosis is essentially an attempt to convince you that you can do something that you don't think you can do. Instead of looking for someone to tell you that you can lose weight, just lose the weight and then you'll have proof that you can lose the weight.
