  • MrM27, I think I like your approach. Can I just ask whether you agree with those who have said that the reason I am losing 4.7 lb per week rather than the 2.2 lb that would be indicated by simple application of the 3500 figure is muscle loss and to some extent also fluid loss. Please assume I am tracking calories consumed…
  • Thanks for this. Have you got a link to such an online calculator? And how long does it normally take to deplete the liver glycogen stores? My rate of weight loss has been constant for 3 weeks.
  • If you are going to talk to me in such a rude tone, please try not to put assumptions you know to be unshared into your statements as if they were common ground - a very cheap arguing technique. And if you want to engage with me at all (nobody's making you), please actually read what I wrote. I said I didn't care about…
  • You've got my TDEE wrong. I think you're using the figure (3267) that would be correct if all of the weight I'm currently losing was fat. That's what I started this thread to ask for advice about, because my actual TDEE is probably only about 1950-2050. I'm 5'11" tall and male, but my frame is probably slightly smaller…
  • I don't know why you say that. My target is 71kg (156.5 lb) and I'm 1.80m (5'11") tall. That gives a body mass index of 71/(1.80^2) = 21.9, which isn't underweight by any definition I'm aware of. It's close to bang in the middle of what's considered the optimal range, 18.5-25, which is exactly why I chose it. In fact it's…
  • Thanks chrism8971 and drmerc for addressing where I'm coming from! Many thanks for this. I will look up on what people have said about resistance training and increased intake of proteins as ways to reduce muscle loss when on a low-calorie diet. I'm not so interested in the aesthetics, really - I'm halfway towards my…
  • Thanks socalkay. The post says losing muscle's bad for "metabolic", "aesthetic" and possibly also "functional" reasons. Which doesn't explain much at all. Metabolism is a function. If something's going wrong, what symptoms should I be getting? Why can't losing a bit of muscle while eating a low-calorie diet for a few weeks…
  • Thanks adowe, serah87 and chrism8971 for addressing the question. I've been doing this for 3 weeks and my rate of weight loss has been constant. So you are saying that as well as fat I've also been losing water and muscle, with the rate of water loss going down and the rate of muscle loss increasing. Links? @cwolfman15 -…
  • Does anybody here know the answer? Many people on diets eat 900 or fewer calories per day. Is it a known result that their rate of weight loss exceeds what you'd expect from doing the usual calculations ? If so, has anyone got some links to where I can find out more? Thanks! John
  • That's right, yes. And I seem to be using up 3267, including the 872 I eat. And my lifestyle is sedentary. I can't work out where all that energy is going! :) Can you be more specific about why I'm losing weight so fast?
