  • Darn spell check, I meant "VIRTA HEALTH"
  • Google "Vista Health" they are doing amazing work on reversing diabetes. Basically if you reduce carbs and eat more whole foods you may be able to reverse it. Remember, the blood sugar levels are the SYMPTOM of the Disease. Insulin resistance is what's causing diabetes. I had diabetes for years and was able to reverse it.…
  • Believe me, a couple years ago it never even crossed my mind. But once I did my first 5k the seed was planted then it was just a matter of building that running base over many months. A Marathon is pretty challenging but I think a Half is do-able for most people if they commit to it.
  • @DropofHoney Thanks! My life has done a complete 180 the last few years. I'm the healthiest, happiest version of me now. I hope to run many more Marathons! :) <3
  • @HLaR79 EXCELLENT! It's an exciting time for was patients. Knowing that you'll have REAL opportunity to change the rest of your life is exciting! Use this time to research and learn as much as you can about wls, nutrition, exercise, metabolism etc. I'm 3 years post op and always looking to expand my knowledge base. Best if…
  • I would classify this as a BIG success. After losing 200+lbs and starting running 18 months ago I completed my first FULL MARATHON on April 29. I was even the cover story in the local Newspaper on race day! Link below: San Luis Obispo Tribune article
  • Over the past month I've become somewhat of a local "celebrity" (it probably helps that I live in a small city). Almost daily I get congratulated and asked about the Marathon. It's kind of fun sharing with people my story of going from 400+lbs to Marathon Finisher. I'm enjoying my 15 minutes! I've been interviewed by the…
  • Each doctor seems to recommend different amounts. The lowest recommendation I've seen is 60grams. Usually it's around 70 or 80. Our bodies "store" protein for a week or more so you don't really need to hit a certain amount daily. And if you're eating whole foods you should be getting plenty. And for me personally, I…
  • @Samquentin Happy Surgerversary! You've really embraced your new lifestyle. I'm so happy for you! How is the running going? I forget if you did the 5k? My story is startimg to get noticed. I'll be interviewed tomorrow for the third time. Marathon Training Academy Podcast. It's a pretty popular one!
  • @RebeccaMaunder Weight loss slows/stops for virtually everyone 6-12 months post op. It did for me. My suggestion would be not to worry about the scale for a while. Focus on healthy habits and all the other health strides you've made since surgery. You WILL LOSE more weight. It just won't be as fast and it will come in…

  • @lizadaze Excellent! Never too late to be healthy. I'm kind of doing a "modified keto" myself. I basically mostly eat whole foods. Anything in it's natural form I eat as much as I want. Meat nuts fruit veggies seeds beans etc. I'm 3+years post op and been about the same weight for a year. Healthier and happier than ever…
  • I try and tell everyone DON'T WORRY ABOUT BMI. It's a made up formula by a Belgian mathematician 150 years ago. It became popularized in the '90s when insurance companies started using it to deny coverage to "overweight" and "obese" people. It has NO BASIS in health or science. It was never intended to measure individuals.…
  • Oh, ok. I looked at another post of yours and just saw it. Were you ever overweight/obese? This was ten years ago?
  • @HappyKat5 I agree with a lot of what you wrote. Just to be clear, you had surgery @ 130lbs? Bariatric surgery? I guess I'm a little confused.
  • First off, there's no rule that says you have to lose 100lbs to be "successful". So, no need to be ashamed. Everybody's body is different and we all lose at different speeds and amount. So many factors go into weight loss they are too numerous to list. And also, don't forget weight is only one measurement of…
  • @Ultima_Morpha Wow. Super impressed! How were the trails? Elevation? Now that I've done a Marathon I'm itching to do an Ultra now. But probably not on a trail!
  • @Jessical1066 you will have to make changes to see changes. But if you start to like the food you'll find that it is in fact delicious and nourishing. Personally I don't drink any "shakes" and rarely have stuff like protein bars. I believe the more processed something is, the easier it is to eat. And you'll continue to…
  • I did finish. It was an amazing day! I'll post more details later.
  • Yesterday I officially became a Marathon FINISHER. I stuck to my plan of just enjoying the experience. Took lots of pics along the course with friends who came out to cheer me on. Finished in 5:24:19. Lots of room for time improvement so I'm sure I'll PR next one! Thinking of doing CIM in December. Same newspaper did a…
  • Toeing the line of the San Luis Obispo Marathon tomorrow. My first full!
  • Thanks for all the responses! About 40 left. The local newspaper ran a story about my journey to marathon. Below is link. http://www.sanluisobispo.com/news/local/article209854699.html

  • Who said you can't eat for pleasure anymore? Lol. I think what you're do may be more eating yummy junk food when you're not really hungry? Correct me if I'm wrong. I enjoy EVERYTHING I eat. Otherwise I wouldn't be consuming it. I eat different types of food now though. Rarely do I have fast food or sweets anymore. But the…
  • @anbrdr Right on! If you're running hills you're bound to go slower but like you said you're building power. I tend to judge my effort levels more than speed these days. If I'm getting out of my comfort zone then I know I'm making progress. Are you signed up for a 5k race?
  • Miracle Miles for Kids 10k this morning. Morro Bay to Cayucos (California). 58:09 PR on sand. Tune up for Marathon next week!
  • @JessieKat2552 I'm shocked that your FIANCEE would think that. This is the person you plan on spending the rest of your life with? I'm not saying you should dump them but you need to take a hard look at your relationship and how their opinions of you are going to affect your mental and physical health going forward.…
  • I was trying to find a thread that had to do with Artificial Sweeteners and couldn't find one so I'm posting this link in this discussion: https://youtu.be/FKciZz3hfVc It's fairly long (18 minutes) but she does a deep dive into the research about the 4 main artificial sweeteners. I would encourange anyone who really wants…
  • @loveshoe Interview today went really well. We met at a local park and spent over an hour together. There was a cameraman taking pics and shooting some video. They got some of me running too. It was fun to tell my "story". I actually got a little emotional when I started talking about my first 5k last year. He said he…
  • Yesterday I was looking in the mirror and noticed a little definition in my chest/arms. Then found out I could flex my pecs! Now I have "man boobs" that can bounce, lol. Also, I'll be doing an interview with the local newspaper today (I know no one reads newspapers anymore but still...
  • Yeah, get that "failure" word out of your head. If you've gained 40lbs back six years out that's pretty good in my book. My guess is that you lost much more than 40lbs. I don't know ANYONE who had wls that lost all the weight they wanted and never gained a pound back and lived happily ever after. Weight will fluctuate. My…
