  • The Christmas holiday season can be very difficult. First off, I am at home for two weeks rather than at work and that mean more temptation to snack and being less mobile in general during the work day. Secondly, the places where I exercise are mostly closed during this time. I really don't exercise as much as at home, and…
  • Morning. I usually try to run a quick mile or two around my neighborhood before I start my routine of breakfast and getting ready for work. I will have some fat free milk, water, or orange juice before I head out. No coffee until I get back home. The nice thing about this is that it is FINISHED; and even if I get lazy and…
  • I have a lot of ideas and comments about supplemental weight training for martial arts. Obviously all martial artists need to develop and maintain a base level of strength, endurance, and general fitness in order to compete. Which is the greatest factor and how should we concentrate our training? Endurance is important,…

I trained hard over the summer and sprained the tendons at my right elbow. The injury continues to nag me because I continue to practice and workout, but it seems to be…

  • No belts worn in kendo but we use the kyu and dan system. Kyu ranks count backwards from 6 to 1 (ikkyu) then obviously dan rankings count forward 1 to 8. 9th and 10th dan rankings have been retired so hachidan is the highest.
  • I hit plateaus like everyone else, and getting older is a factor too. However, I do try to mix up my workouts to overcome this. Going to the gym 3 times a week, my workouts rotate through 6 different routines hitting different muscle groups- then every 4 to 8 weeks I would switch through this cycle: Moderate weight,…
