  • I love this post. I feel like a baby to all this calorie regulating, nutrition, and fitness stuff. I have gone for most of 40 years purposely ignoring anything to do with real knowledge and practical experience regarding health. So as I am trying to lose weight and get fit, I have lots of fails. I have setbacks, days…
  • My sister has been Ingressing for years. I don't do it, but she LOVES getting out and destroying portals. Her activity level has definitely been impacted by this game.
  • While I do think it is un-trendy, I agree with this snip. Swimming doesn't get a bad rap and does get generally acknowledged as legit and highly beneficial exercise. If this board had more retirees, you might see more people who are avid about aqua activity, be it swimming or aqua-cise classes or whatever. I have never…
  • Well, it is definitely not "trending" at the moment that I have seen. On MFP, lifting heavy seems to be the go-to du jour. I go to a gym that has a 3 lane lap pool and see maybe 2 people a week in there working. This could be due to WHEN I hit the gym, but still, the pool is included in membership cost, and I wonder at the…
  • Read the stickied threads in each forum here that pertain to what you want to do. Use an online TDEE calculator to determine your total daily energy expenditure. Use MFP with calorie goal set to something less than your TDEE but NO less than 1200 calories a day. Accurately weigh (grams is best) your food on a digital food…
  • Happy workout day! Trainer Mike reviewed my form for overhead presses & taught me olympic clean form with a real barbell and everything! Very stoked about this. Then took a half hour break and hit the 75 min power yoga class that consistently whips me. I will be a sore pup tomorrow, but feeling amazing right now!
  • Nettamere3 - That just sounds hideous! Ugh!! That beats the "I don't want all that heavy muscle" for me. -shudders-
  • Thanks for the replies! :) Yeah, I figured raises for calves, but not really "there" yet (cutting weight phase for another 30# or so, then will actively work on sculpting, don't see the point if I am just gonna lose the muscle tissue anyhow). I guess I was/am surprised to see as much "pop" as I am on the front of my legs.…
  • Yup, I still am a newbie. If you are looking for more challenge, look for "power yoga." It is no joke. I probably don't have the breathing base I should for doing it, but the workout & poses are intense in the class I do. 75 minute flows will make a burn of it, for sure!
  • Just @ the gym and saw a broscience in action. Dude lifts in a moderately heavy fleece jacket, shirt, shorts, & hat...takes his 5 mins beteween sets in the sauna. I was under the impression that heating like that is probably not good for one, but what do I know. Stilllll, I thought of this thread.
  • Nevermind your shrubberies... I would like to return this parrot.
  • We pay $15/person every 2 weeks for Gold's. I am sure there was a signup fee but I forget what it was. Offers classes (spin, zumba, yoga, bodypump, others), childcare, pool, hot tub, sauna, cardio theatre room, additional cardio machines on the floor, basketball court, yoga studio, and all the machines, freeweights. Also…
  • My protein go-to is greek yogurt (and sometimes hb eggs), but my new protein "thing" is turkey breast. I get the frozen ones from Honeysuckle White or Butterball, put 2 of them in the crockpot on Sat or Sun, have a family meal that night, and then portion the rest out into 4 oz containers for on-the-go. I googled proteins,…
  • I do not do yoga as my primary exercise, but in many ways I wish I did. However, it is too pricey to attend studios. Instead, my main exercise is weight training with yoga as the "side dish." I take one power yoga class a week at my gym (the only one that fits my schedule) and am planning to do yoga again at home on some…

  • I have found that focusing a lot of time & energy into the nutrition side makes much more difference to my weight than time at the gym. This is not to say exercise isn't important, but Cals in vs Cals out (CICO) methodology made me realize that eating (and weighing & logging intake) is a better way to get weight under…
  • Squats, deadlifts, bent-over barbell rows, bench press, barbell waist to chest pulls, iso lat incline press. Prepping to start Stronglifts 5x5. Skipped overhead press tonight in favor of the pulls & incline press. Gonna get coaching on dumbbell row form @ next training session. Good night of lifting, tho, so I get a…
  • Also on YouTube is Yoga With Adrienne. She is super cute & the flows are solid. Her beginner stuff is helpful. Try googling or YouTube searching for "hatha yoga." It is a good starter yoga style. Unless you dive into advanced stuff, you are not going to harm yourself...yoga is hard at the top end, but it takes a LOT to get…
  • I don't do Stronglifts (yet) but I do squats and NO lunges. I had an ACL replaced years ago and lunges just HURT. Squats stress that knee, but nowhere near what lunges were doing. For whatever reason I either don't have the strength or can't hold alignment form for lunges. I am hoping over time that alternate lifting with…
  • Okay, I am about to give you some bad advice. Try shopping for one outfit at Torrid if you have the means. I found that the heavier I was, the frumpier the available clothing selections became. Torrid has -sexy- clothes for big women. Now, limit your retail therapy to ONE outfit, because the better goal is to work from the…
  • My boys are 11 & 14. Like many of you, I do worry about (inadvertently causing) body image issues. Hubby was diagnosed with diabetes in Dec 2014, so we had to make a change. Our boys were regularly mentioning how fat we were anyway (and it was/is true). When I talk to them, we frame it around Dad's health issue and both of…
  • Is the last part a) true and b) also true for chicks? O.o -bookmarks to research-

  • Oh, and fruit. The new Glycemic Index may have changed the specific fruits, but I am sure there were fresh fruits involved.
  • When my folks did NS, there were mad amounts of salads & non-starchy veg dinner sides involved. Yes (and yay!) for eating more & being healthy & sustainable.
  • After being here a while, I pretty much forgo cardio and do strength/resistance training instead. I love it! The weight comes off and what's underneath is happier. What I finally get is what "body building" can mean! :) (Even though I am not technically building currently.)
  • This. My diary is open. If you look at what I eat, there are a lot of foods (formerly known as) "junk". (I am changing that idea from being here: no food is junk, it just has a macro profile that is harder to fit into my goals.) But instead of having 3 donuts yesterday at the office, I had 1 and decided that I could live…
  • <3 this! I tend to lose my focus every few weeks, but I wrangle myself back into "doing the things" (sorta, I try anyhow). I love that you shared your story. Needed this today!
  • Well, you could lose -faster-. Even at the 1650, you will lose, but the rate is slower. That was the "ah HA" thing about it for me: I am still losing on higher cal days, just not as quickly. Ergo, I am not "blowing my whole diet" when I am at 1300 calories (which I used to feel like). I am still in deficit, and now that…
  • I hear that IS one of the hardest vices to give up. >.> Wait, what? O.o
  • The hardest thing for me to give up is old ways of thinking about food. I was a kid in the 80s (no eggs! No bacon! Yes fish oil! Cholesterol, zomg!), a teen/young adult in the 90s (STOP the Insanity! No fat!), and an adult through the millenium (Atkins! No/low carbs! Eat bacon again!). I am 40 years old and have learned…
