my nutritionist just recommended Syntrax. i have the little grab n go packets. they are actually amazingly tasty too -- especially the fuzzy naval. i especially love them because they dissolve really easily and i hate grainy smoothies. if you try it, i would love to know what you think.

As i just finished writing on another discussion board, if i could lose a half a pound a week every week for the next 18 months, i would be the happiest woman in the world. With regard to motivation, my personal experience is that if you stay heavy enough for long enough, your body will obliging supply the motivation in…

For me, there does seem to be a direct correlation between weight loss and getting my heart rate higher for longer, so i am with you on wanting to see that rate climb. my experience has been that my hr gets higher when i do exercises that require me to support all of my own weight, like an elliptical or a treadmill, as…

Senco -- good job taking action now, while you are still down 18 pounds. that is a significant amount to have lost. I was like a feral child in the middle of the night last night -- just eating everything i could find. i am totally keeping up my exercise and i have been right on track for almost two weeks with daytime…

so, first, let me say that i had severe calf pain that i ignored and, by the time i finally went to the doctor i had messed up my leg so badly that i can never do high impact activities like running or tennis ever again for the rest of my life. Those were my two favorite exercises and i soon gained a great deal of weight.…

For almost the last decade, i have found that i am almost always too hot or too cold. I just assumed it was because i am a spoiled Jewish princess. Well, actually that's true also, but at least now i know it is not the cause of my temperature woes.

You are a superstar, Mauigirl!

I think WW is an awesome program, it just didn't work for me in the long term. The points system never got to feel like a lifestyle, and i got too good at gaming the system. (i used to be a lawyer -- maybe all of that legal training was the problem). Following up on Sodakat's post on the importance of learning the science…

As i understand it, my nutritionist's plan for me is to start as i am now, with 50 net carbs a day, and very gradually reduce that number, so that my body can gradually stop craving them (i too, could live on carbs. and practically did). then, as i start to get closer to my goal weight, we will gradually increase my carb…

sure can. (i didnt know a thing about carbs until last week and now i am obsessed!!) Net carbs are the amount of carbs in a food, minus the amount of fiber. apparently carbs are more prone to turn to sugars and to be retained as fat in your body than protein or even than fat itself. (weird but true. they are of especially…

Mauigirl -- i went in and manually changed my goals because MFP had me eating many more carbs than my nutritionist recommended. i reduced my number of carbs to 70, although that is really just a place holder since the number of carbs i am allowed every day is based so much on how much fiber is in those foods. one day i…

I really recommend belly dancing -- it has done wonders for my core strength. BUT -- you have to really really really not mind looking stupid. what with thrusting out your chest and gyrating your hips, you just cant be self-conscious about it or you will be paralyzed. i don't think i could have done it when i was younger,…

Middlehatch -- so glad you went to Zumba. I went to my 5:30 belly dancing and felt much better for it. WOW!! That picture. I would love to see the next one when you get a very well deserved red dress!

Sounds like you and i are in similar places. i have lost about 26 pounds since May but have about 40 pounds more to go. and, similar to you, i went about 5 weeks from the end of november until early january without losing an ounce! i was doing all of the things i always do -- eating less, moving more. then, about three…

i just read a super interesting article about why people who exercise a lot often either gain weight, or lose much less than one would expect. the article gave two possible reasons: 1. people over-estimate the number of calories they burn while exercising. They think they can eat a whole lot more because they have…

oh dear. i love reading this thread, with its emphasis on success, and taking action. i am rereading some of the posts now, because i am in a whiny self-pitying mood. i am sniveling to myself because i am having one of my not-so-great lung days, when it feels like i am breathing salt water rather than air. and so, i have…

Maulgirl62 -- how are finding the carb reduction? for me, it has been quite a challenge. I just recently met with a nutritionist and, as of yesterday. and trying to do no more than 50 net carbs per day (net carbs means carbs minus fiber).

I love the idea of having this thread meld with an already existing group -- much simpler and more organic. the only problem is that more than half of the folks here are in their '60s and it wouldnt be right to exclude them. thoughts?

i have been so inspired by reading this discussion and am wondering if we should turn it into a group. This would have the advantage of making it easier to organize discussions of specific topics (like lifting, for example) and allowing us to do searches. it might also make us easier to find. There are already groups for…

The mention of seated yoga reminded me that when i hurt my leg, i found a series of exercise dvd's called Seated Aerobics for Everyone. I remember i especially liked the seated salsa, belly dancing and boxing. actually, I had totally forgotten that was how i first got started boxing, which has become my favorite exercise.…

Thank you all so much for this wonderful discussion. I am in my mid-50s and peri-menapausal (and have been for years. Oh my -- i actually yearn for menapause!). Last year i was diagnosed with COPD and it was a real wake up call. Doctor said i would need an oxygen tank in a decade or less if i didnt lose weight and get fit.…

so excited to have found this group. I am 53, peri-menapausal and looking to offer and receive support Last may, i was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease on Tuesday the 27th. That Thursday, the 29th, I went to the obstetrician with one of my daughter's, where, for the first time, we saw my first…

I LOVE adjustable dumbbells. My husband and I have had a set of bowflex for years and years (maybe a decade?) and they work great. they are bigger then regular dumbbells, which is sometimes annoying, but i dont have a ton of space to store those heavier hand weights, so the trade off is totally worth it. Recently, i also…
