A week after I was supposed to get my last Depo shot, I started gaining. Hormones went nuts. Ate sugar straight from the bag. Breasts swollen and painful--had to take showers backwards, the water hurt so bad. Oh, and I lost huge amounts of hair. But for the year I was on it? No problems at all. They all started after I…

I hope the OP takes what she can use from this thread, and leaves the rest. OP, it's worth trying to stop intake of foods with added sugar. If you can make it a week, you might have it licked. Some people can "eat anything at any time," and it works. But if you have an issue with sugar, that may not be the way to go.…

No one here has to understand. What you're feeling is real. There's research to support what you say. As another poster said, hang in there.

Looking for shortcuts is human. What's amazing is that he got away with it for so long. I mean, what made the suddenly pen the letter now? Could it be because Food Babe is on the rack at the moment?

All RIGHT! :)

But the fact that American poor are wealthier than third world poor doesn't diminish their struggle. Just because they typically don't have distended stomachs and no options, doesn't delegitimize the problems they have. The working poor are often in the hardest position, they can't afford to improve their situations,…

I have to remind myself of this all the time.

Got it, softblonde. But in this land of plenty, why does it have to be a choice between healthy and enough? It sucks. But better "unhealthy" food than not enough. But we can and should do better for our kids--for everyone.

Thanks, PeachyPlum, for saying it better than I did. She said, "you are not hungry if you're poor," and I wondered if she was stating that as a fact, for her. This is not coming out right at all.
-
To be clear--I meant no disrespect.
-
No, I'm not. I'm wondering if I'm seeing a lack of empathy, when really she is just stating what is a fact to her. But I'm not rich, either. Entirely middle class.

You can afford "food", just not the food you want. Are you poor?

I thought it was weird, too. It seems disjointed. (Maybe he wrote it on a full stomach.) However, I appreciate EWJ Lang's points. "Hangry" is nowhere near the same as true hunger. But perhaps that prove the point of the article's title. I am ashamed to say that I've tried to fast more than once (for spiritual reasons). I…

I'm a total assclown when I'm hungry. It's usually not from dieting, but from poor planning. And I'm certainly no genius in this state. In my 20s and 30s, I cried a few times when I was hungry.
-
I just posted this because I never heard the word "hangry" before I came here. I've been hangry--just never had a word for it before. It would appear to be true that hangriness is a first-world problem. So no, you don't have to apologize. Maybe just be grateful? Or not. It was just an interesting article, and thought it…

Hair loss, especially if it is falling out in clumps, is usually stress related. Your doctor was probably right. Sometimes the doctor DOES know what s/he is talking about, even if it's not what you want to hear. I assure you, you are incorrect. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9714170

1/2 oz walnuts and 1 T chocolate chips = 163 calories

Bariatric surgery may cause some metabolic funkiness that none of us, however well-intentioned, may be able to identify. Best, maybe, not to go below 1,000 calories without getting your doctor's input and consent. This kind of issue can be so frustrating. One week after I went off Depo-Provera, I started gaining weight and…

The jury's still out, but there is strong evidence--I mean, like peer-reviewed research--that suggests that for some people (not all), sugar and carbs may have addictive qualities. I'm not saying that this is true for you, but there are people who have had success not eating added sugar at all. I understand that it's…

I think it's called a supermarket. The sell cheesecake there, I think. Chocolate and chips, too. And you don't have to have it offered to you. You can buy it yourself, with your very own money.

Hey there, Yes, first things first--height and weight? It really does take more time to lose those last few pounds. What I noticed is that it seems that a lot of packaged, prepared foods come up. While they my be fine in terms of fitting into your allotted calories, they do contain a lot of sodium--could the issue be water…

Roasted veggies. Here's one for roasted Brussels sprouts. http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/roasted-brussels-sprouts-recipe2.html You can roast any veggie, and you can also roast frozen veggies.

Oh man...Moes is the only way to go. I order the Close Talker with steak and guac, grilled onions and peppers, no crispy bowl, cheese or dressing, and use the green salsa as the dressing. http://www.moes.com/food/menu/salads/

"never eat chocolate again" DOES NOT EQUATE to "help you stay away from chips, chocolate, and cheesecake." Most people who want to lose weight, or maintain their loss, would do well to stay away from these foods most of the time. They might be considered "treats," which implies a once-in-awhile special occasion. To those…

Keep it up, you look awesome!

They're not "trigger" foods. They're just foods. I definitely do have trigger foods, and I'll say it in front of God and everyone. For me, it's masochistic to have cheese doodles and pita chips in the house. I have more peace when I accept that I have no control over these foods. I don't feel diminished in any way. But to…

5'2", 1200 a day, age 52, 50 minutes of moderate cardio 5 days a week, no weights. Typically don't eat back exercise calories. Once I put in my garden (strenuous stuff), I'm hopeful the last few pounds will come off more quickly.
-
I should add that my way of not eating that type of food was never to keep it in my house. It worked for me, for years. But he just doesn't get that once I pop, I can't stop.

If I find "his" food (chips, chocolate, etc.), I throw it out and deal with his tantrums. I've asked him nicely, for years, to please keep it in his car, or hide it, but he's ignored my requests. I've thrown it out twice now. I doubt I'll have to do it a third time.

I'm 52 and on January 1, weighed 140 pounds. Today, I weigh 131, and my goal weight is 127. I did it by logging calories (1,200 a day), eating whole foods only, and working out (cardio) 50 minutes, 5 days a week. I am not hungry, do not feel deprived, and my mood and energy have improved. I have to say, logging what I eat…
