My daughter in SF wanted to take the kids out for a (safe) walk yesterday and my 7 year old grandson started crying because he was scared to go outside. I lost a little piece of my heart. 😥

Oops, double post

Thought I'd post something positive this morning as a small counterpoint to the crushing onslaught of the sad and the negative. A 90 year old woman who contacted the virus at the Life Care Center in Seattle is recovering. 😊…

My dad got malaria during WWII and until he had to stop donating because of age they went back and forth on his eligibility. Some years it was ok, some not, it was very inconsistent.

Who knew random acts of kindness would become heavily oriented towards TP 😄

Ha! We forgot we have a small standing order with Amazon Marketplace so we have been notified it's on it's way 😊 We probably won't need it so if I run into anyone who is out and can't get it I'll be happy to share 😊

This is the best news so far today! I'm AB and I've been stressing about my potential vulnerability (because I tend to obsess like that). In all the bs blood type hype, AB features as a weak hybrid blood type susceptible to all the worst diseases. I shouldn't pay attention but my subconscious apparently likes the cortisol…

Geez I really hope that doesn't happen! I'll keep my fingers crossed!

In my opinion, anything that gives you peace of mind is completely appropriate. 😊

I'm in the San Francisco bay area (Contra Costa County) and we now have a mandatory shelter in place. Our local Safeways just announced they will open for seniors only Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 - 9:00. My husband is planning to go pick up a few things, even though I keep telling him we're fine. I am having a hard…

https://community.fitbit.com/t5/Get-Moving/How-can-a-person-average-80-000-steps-in-a-day/td-p/174603/highlight/true For your entertainment :) Ongoing (for years) Fitbit community thread exploring whether it's possible to average 80000 steps a day. It's long, rambling, in places rude and an excellent read while you're…

Not a user, but it's common for people taking supplements that they believe are beneficial to suffer adverse effects when they stop taking them. In my case I take a single daily potassium pill for leg cramps. When I run out I start having cramps again in a few days. I have no idea if the pill actually works or if I'm…

https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2020/03/17/wic-tweet-asks-grocery-customers-watch-labels-heres-why/5066040002/ Never considered this. This is specific to Maine, but would apply to various assistance programs across the country. In the US, some people on assistance are limited in the brands of food they can buy. In…

My daughter and SIL are cooped up in a tiny appartment in SF trying to work from home with 2 kids 7 and 2 and a broken washer. 2 just started licking everything a couple of weeks ago and now has the inevitable nasty cold. And it's raining so can't even get out for fresh air 😔 I feel so fortunate we live in a somewhat rural…

I'm thankful they've closed the casinos in CA because we can't get my 91 year old father to stop his weekly visits. And the gym where he goes 3 times a week. Now they need to shut down mass and lock him out of the nursing homes where he ministers to the sick. For a man with an anxiety disorder he is incredibly oblivious. 🙄

Hugs @lilawolf! Take care of yourself and hopefully you'll be feeling better soon.

My daughter is an artist at a small gaming company in San Francisco and the owner had to shut down the office last week to keep them from coming in. He'd been strongly encouraging them to work from home but it's so ingrained in their work culture to gather around each other's work stations to play through the game together…

Just put my personal training on hold for a month and my trainer sent me "homework" :D

One dilemma solved - REI just shut down all it's stores. Tomorrow we'll spend the day deep sanitizing and then just maintain basic hygiene and social distance, and hopefully ride this out. ETA REI is paying it's employees during the closure.

CA Gov Newsom just ordered all bars closed and urged everyone over 65 to self isolate. Just got back from a visit to our (nearly empty) cider pub downtown so that looks like our last outing for a while. The problem is my husband works in retail and so far his company is business as usual. He works for REI so I expect…

I'm sorry Paperpudding! Being separated from loved ones is one of the most difficult aspects of all this. Hugs!

I did over 40,000 exploring Boston a few years ago. The only issue I had were giant blisters on both feet 😮

That's really interesting. I think the statistics from China show the same skew. I believe the theory was that in China there are considerably more male smokers than female, but of course that's just speculation based on a single population.

Just wanted to address the part about "highly processed" carbs having no nutritional benefits. Just a quick read of the nutrition label on any packaged food will contradict this assumption. They all contain various amounts of macro and micro nutrients, and can contribute to an overall healthy diet.

Another one is "Emergence" by Steven Johnson. Subtitled "The Connected Lives of Ants, Brains, Cities, and Software". Again, published in 2001 but still relevant. I freely admit I only got through the first couple of chapters, but I believe the first one explains toilet paper :D…

Here's a good (if somewhat dry) read on the mechanics of changing social behavior. The link is to a summary of the chapters. The author is Malcolm Gladwell and the title is "The Tipping Point How Little Things Can Make A Big Difference" Even though it is was published in 2000 it's still remarkably relevant. I read it a few…

You can add Andromeda Strain to that list 😄

You make a compelling point.
