Stretching is a great idea. Some of my favorite workouts involve long stretching routines, it makes my body feel so great. I'd really like to work in a regular yoga class, just gotta find the time. Enjoy.

My suggestion would be to take a spin class. If you are self-conscious then take a bike in the back of the class. I assure you, if you do not keep up with the instructor no one will know (or care). Let the experience inspire you. One thing about spinning, it is not easy to hurt yourself which is always a potential problem…

LEANER. This will allow you to be faster on the bike and the run. In fact, a critical part of triathlon training is losing weight for exactly this reason.

Have you thought about using a run-walk-run strategy? http://www.jeffgalloway.com/training/run-walk/

I did a partial separation on my right SI joint a couple of years ago, boy that really hurt so you have my sympathies. I spent a lot of time in PT and it is what ultimately healed me. The key was time, stretches, and strength training. For stretches I did (and still do) piriformis stretches, bridges, cat/camel. For…

The footbed on Birkenstocks is pretty supportive, but there is insufficient side and top of foot support

Yep, very common. I often delay my run until I go. Experience taught me this lesson. Enough said

Looks nice, won't do a d@mn thing, but it looks nice.

You can only change the shape of your body by surgery and building muscle. You cannot "spot-reduce" when losing weight, the fat comes off your body in a way you cannot control. Certain exercises will build muscle and this will shape your body but results will limited if you continue to carry extra body fat. Might be best…

I'm really careful about eating any of my exercise cals. I will admit to sloppy tracking but I do consistently lose so my experience is that not eating my exercise points gives me some cushion. With that said, long runs burn lots of kcals, I commonly eat back <50% on those days.

I live in Florida and love to run in the morning. The air is cool and the humidity is high. When I get home I am absolutely drenched from head to toe. Nothing makes you feel more like a successful workout.

How good of a swimmer are you? Swimming is great exercise but you have to have halfway decent stroke mechanics to get much out of it. Maybe walking would give you better results?

+1. An ice bag is now your BFF

My best estimate is that I burn ~800 kcal/hour running. I never burn on the bike the way I do running.

"[it] all comes down to how much I'm eating" BINGO
-
Jeez, I always poo-pooed the 1200+ kcal burns my computer/HRM would record on a 90-105 min (26-30 mile) ride, but maybe my burn rate is that high...
-
Calories burned depends on the intensity of the exercise and your personal ability to burn calories (how big is YOUR engine). This is extremely variable, but I can tell you in a 50 min spin class I usually burn about 325 kcal, and my heart rate would lie in the 120-135 zone for the entire 50 mins. So I think your device…

Oh man, don't get me started about the pool at my gym :(

I kinda disagree with this assessment. Obviously road and weather conditions are not considerations when riding indoors. But as far as a well-taught spin class, the drastic changes in resistance and cadence and the in-and-out of the saddle make spinning quite a different workout than road riding IMHO. With a road ride, I…

The spin bikes at my gym record Watts (current and average) and kcals burned. I have a Powertap HRM strap (https://www.powertap.com/product/powertap-powercal) and the wattage recorded on that is pretty consistent with the bike. On average, I am ~325 kcal burned in a 50 min spin class, calculated using either the bike or…

You definitely need to go to a dedicated running store rather than a big-box store to get properly fitted and find the shoe that is best for you and your gait. With that said I have run on Brooks Adrenaline, Mizuno Wave Prophecy but am now 100% in the tank with Hoka One One Bondis for road training. These are like running…

These guys are right, the primary use of an HRM is to know your heart rate zones during a workout. The HRMs that work best are the chest strap type, the HRM integrated into the watch are less accurate.

One notch tighter on my belt today.

I *think* I had a 3000 cal burn doing a 3hr triathlon once, but no way I could do that on consecutive days never mind making it a regular workout goal.

It is true that a good quality pair of running shoes will last you 300-500 miles. If you are heavier perhaps a bit less, lighter a bit more. Some of this is also dependent on whether you are a forefoot or heel striker. I am a overpronator and this tends to wear my heels down faster. The issue really isn't the tread wear -…

To that point, if my running/bike volume is high, I’m not inclined to do a lower body workout in the gym. Am I missing something?
-
Yep, that’s how I got started. Have done 3 half marathons and countless triathlons

I have 3 bikes, an old hardtail that is my beater bike, a 20 yo dual suspension MTB, and a road bike. Most of my riding now is on the road as I really don't have any friends that are into MTB. I will occasionally go out by myself but little worried about hurting myself 5 miles into the woods. As for tracking, I'm pretty…

Intrigued by this StrongLifts 5×5 Workout, wondering what most are doing here, 3 weight workouts and 3 runs / week?
