  • The other day a guy was lying on the bench doing leg lifts, but his knees were bent at a 90 and his range of motion was very short. A little down, then a little toward his chest. He was working HARD judging by his vocal exertions. Maybe start on the mat?
  • I've taken a tracking break, although I've still kept to my normal gym schedule. After a bad case of the blahs, I decided to work on squat depth and de-loaded a ton on that. My golf elbow is still tender, but getting better. I'm looking forward to getting back at it and finishing my weight loss as well as mixing things up…
  • One of my friends posted this on FB today. I lol'd when the scene mirrored the experiences on this thread! Can't wait to show DH. His "elder experience" still makes my laugh ;) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1GUQVo1Lps
  • Honest ones usually are. 3 sets of 25 reps, bodyweight won't burn much at all. It IS a good avenue for getting up the gumption to try strength training, though. Unfortunately, not a lot of calorie burn there, either. Strength goals aren't about that, though. Cardio will burn a lot, and strength training will preserve…

  • Monday Dec 14 - yoga. Stupid elbow still hurts during chaturanga and I got through 3 before having to modify to 8 point, then modify again. I have one of those sleeve things- impulse buy today. It does make a difference for everyday...we'll see. I was worried that medium wasn't going to compress enough, but it leaves marks…
  • Pull-ups are a kind of Holy Grail to me. Color me inspired! I like it, too. Every time a regular gives me a "nod", I stand a little taller. Not very many are there for "strength" per se, but there are several hard workers. They recognize the dedication to keep going.
  • I began strength training a month after I committed to a deficit, with 60-70 pounds to lose. I've lost 30-ish and am SO HAPPY that I didn't wait. I wear sizes that I couldn't get into at the same weight, previously. Your body is "tighter" when you preserve muscle. Now, I'm not lean...yet. It's cool that I'm more than 10…
  • Show her this thread. http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/977538/halp-heavy-lifting-made-me-supah-bulky/p1 OK, there may be a couple of women on there who are genetically gifted in the muscle building department. Most everyone has to work for every ounce of "bulk" from muscle, so it's not an issue for the…
  • I've been pretty unmotivated for the last several days. EVERYTHING seems like such a chore. I knew that a yoga session would lift my spirits, at least for a couple of hours, so I went to my regular class with the possibility of doing SL afterward. I skipped on Thurs. It worked. I felt better and didn't want to blow lifting…
  • Squats 120 lb 5x5 Bench 90 lbs 5x5 - didn't need a spotter, woohoo! Row 85 lbs 5x5 Working my way back up to previous weights. The elbow is better, but still needs a little TLC this evening.
  • Yoga. Still have stupid elbow issues, but it's getting better.
  • Yes, increasing reps is a good strategy. I struggle with upper body lifts, too, and watch form videos regularly to try to help. Eh, they are lifts that I just keep working at. This video helped me with my bench a LOT. Struggled at 70 lb for quite a while and progressed to 100 nicely after using her tips. Unfortunately, I…
  • Yeah. I'm a 45 yr old woman, with a goal of around 1500 cal/day, who has been following SL since Feb. The newbie gains (new lifters can actually gain a little muscle) surprised me. The strength gains are even greater. I freaked out at the thought of squatting 45 lbs and struggled a bit at first . I got up to 150 for sets…
  • That's a shame. You progress pretty quickly, even while eating at a deficit. It's simple, it has a free app to track your lifts, and a timer for resting. Compound lifts do a body good.
  • Took some Aleve, went to yoga and felt loose enough to go ahead with SL. Squats 115 lbs 5x5 Didn't get stuck, thank goodness. OHP 50 lbs 5x5 felt confident enough to do this without the rack. Used a pre-loaded barbell and watched the unevenness between left and right in a mirror. Oy. DL 165 lbs 1x5 BP narrow grip accessory…
  • I didn't do my usual today due to DOMS...which sucks. A week off to tend to muscle/tendon issues and, after getting back to the routine, my quads were screaming for two days. So, tomorrow I'll go to yoga and, hopefully, the thigh muscles will be recovered enough so that I don't get stuck in the hole during squats. Bright…
  • Another de-load for me, after taking a much needed break last week. Squats 110 lb 5x5 Bench 85 lb 5x5 Row 80 lb 5x5 My elbow bothered me during squats. Nothing I did to modify the grip helped the twinge-y feeling go away.
  • I took last week off to try to let the knots in my back un-knot and rest my elbow. I feel so much better! Yoga today, still had to take it easy on certain poses due to my elbow/wrist. Bah. Back to SL tomorrow and I'm looking forward to it!
  • ^^^That's nice. I'm glad mr squat listened and had a good result! I've done my strength stuff on Tues/Thurs for several months. There haven't been very many people who have acknowledged me in that time. I'm not an extrovert, so part of that is me. Thursday was an anomaly. Deadlift is last and I move out of the squat rack…
  • I wear Fila Skele-toes EZ, because I already had them when I first began a program. I had some wrestling shoes from my karate days that I wore occasionally, but didn't like them nearly as much as the Fila which are close to barefoot-feel. I'm looking at a basic canvas shoe to try, since my Filas are coming apart. It…
  • +1 to the above Great job! Keep up the bodyweight exercises because, you're right, weighted workouts DO shape your body very nicely ;) Strength training and yoga get this woman to the gym religiously...that's never happened before!
  • I imagine that you're much more flexible in that area than I am, and/or already practice correct posture. I could hardly breathe at the beginning so I'm all kinds of screwed up. I googled and saw one site recommend the mat be placed horizontal for a more intense stretch. I don't know the details, though.
  • Holy crap! That's an intense stretch! I could feel the knot on my shoulder blade pop several times. Couldn't get my arms to the floor, at first. And man, my chest muscles are a mess. I started with bent knees, but was able to stretch my legs out toward the end. Then, my elderly German Shepherd came to investigate and…
  • Tha That sounds like it would hurt and feel so good all at the same time! I'm going to try it right now. Thanks so much!
  • I follow Stronglifts, too. In Feb I started with the 45 lb bar and progressed to 150 on squats by Sept. Vacations, illness, concern about form led to several de-loads over the course of the year. I'll stay at a weight to get form dialed in, too. I was at 145 and have de-loaded all the lifts again because of some back/arm…
  • You've made me CAW! That really loud sound that startles everyone but the person emitting it. That's dang funny. It's interesting how boobs kind of define us. I think my shoulders roll forward because I want to minimize their presence. Which has caused all kinds of pec/back issues. Seriously, if I walk around like the doc…
  • It took me a while to go over to the rack. My only instruction came from books, random posts in "Fitness", and watching videos of Mehdi and huge guys/big, bearded guys on youtube. I felt so self-conscious at first. I got over it. I had a guy tell me I was monopolizing the rack for my squat sets. He wanted to use the…
  • That's hilarious! I'm a nipper. I don't love it or hate it, and had no idea that others had strong feelings about it until a few years ago. What's to hate, really? There aren't adequate foam bras for 36 F people. My current sports bra is woefully lacking in all categories but I refuse to by another $70 one until I'm close…
  • And here I was thinking "Thank Heaven he doesn't "man-scape". I'm an older woman, though, and haven't been brain-washed into thinking that males should be hairless. Testosterone means some fur! Testosterone is male, why dilute male-ness? You look great. We understand that "making THIS a 10" takes time and effort. You're…
  • The fact that ANYONE is telling the person in that avatar what to do...boggles the mind.
