  • Last night 1200y in 30 minutes. Finally back in the pool last week after more than four months off. Have worked back to where I was at that point, and should be doing my usual mile plus in another week or so. Hard to believe how quickly the speed and distance goes away. Have taken ten seconds/100y off my pace in a week,…
  • The 0 to 1650 swim plan greatly improved my endurance. Was easily able to go a mile at the end of six weeks.
  • My dad wasn't much older than I am now, getting stents in his heart and all that. That was over 20 years ago and he's still kicking (and a bit of a PITA). You know what you need to do, now it's a matter of priorities -- are you worth it? If yes, then get it. If not, then delete your account here. But you are worth it, I'm…
  • Have not been neglecting much -- except getting in the tank. My local (private) pool gets all crowded with children swim lessons and diving lessons and I have learned that I just hate it so much that I can't get in. Now that swim team and most of the lessons are done, I'm looking forward to getting back in. I really miss…
  • So sorry to hear that. If I didn't have a nearby pool to help me two years ago, I don't think I would have made the progress that I did. I know you're in another category, but ... I wish pools were not so expensive to operate. We have lost just a few lately, but when there only are a few around, it's a huge impact. And…
  • Have not been in the water since I was in the ocean last month. I miss it, but my pool gets too crazy in the summer and is not friendly to evening lap swim. Still following you all, and on my bike just about every day for a replacement. But I do miss the chlorine so much...
  • Maybe there is a Cosmo article? Sorry, that was stupid. Of course there's not. I'm pretty old. I get more glances than I did when I was more round than not. I know that women are not always appreciative of attention. Men are not smart about that. We're really not. And younger specimens are really not smart about it. I'm…
  • I get it after a hard swim. Always in my legs, which makes no sense, as I don't use them much except for pushing off the wall on turns. Really freaky to experience and frankly somewhat annoying, but after a couple of years, I don't consider it harmful, just a notification that work was done...
  • I (re)started swimming as part of my initial weight loss and it was very effective. I had competed as a middle teen and had the basics down, just no endurance. Will echo all the good advice here. You will see an increase in efficiency and speed with better technique. I watched a lot of the videos from Total Immersion and…
  • For open water you'll need a watch that uses GPS. In the pool, an accelerometer is necessary. The DC Rainmaker site is one of the best for reviews of this kind of gear, in my opinion. Very thorough, and he puts the equipment through real-world testing. https://www.dcrainmaker.com/
  • I confess I only come here for properly spelled confessions.
  • Nope. Have not done a lap in weeks. Driving me crazy. Glad to see that the tribe is keeping the faith, from fishgutzy through emma, curls, and beerfoamy and all you rest on forward.
  • The power company broke something in the heater at my pool. Hope to see it back in action at the end of this week.
  • Neglected the dog in order to hit the pool last night. Just maintaining pace, no improvement. 2150y, 55 minutes
  • Hi there. I started swimming not long after I got serious using MFP to track calories. I swam a bunch as a young teenager but nothing after I started college. Due to my large mass, it was painful to do much walking and the pool sessions were key to getting me moving without foot and joint pain. I figured I needed a goal,…
  • Look for the green checkmark on food entries. It's far from perfect, but better than no checkmark at all. Good that you are asking this question, though -- you want to know (eventually) the values of cooked vs raw. It's in there, just might have to dig for it.
  • I've been doing a repair job on the house after work that wiped out my swim time. Finally completed it Sunday. After over two weeks, got back in last night and had a very slow mile. It felt so good, even if it was grindingly slow.
  • This is such BS. The whole thing, for the most part.... Glad you made your flight, no thanks to Theatrical Security Aspirants...I have had similar treatment and it boils my Blutos esp after going through the process of getting a Nexus pass. They are selling the theater of security and it's a shame.
  • Awesome pace, @fishgutzy -- I'm way off where I was about 8 months ago where I was knocking off 2500y plus in an hour. Tonight was all I could do to get 2000 yards in 50 minutes. But it was still fantastic and I loved it all even though it was nice weather
  • Finally got back in the water for a cool and rainy evening. Very slow compared to last spring but it felt great. 1850y in 50 minutes.
  • If you can tolerate the band, likely you'll love it. Looks like you have the Sapphire model? I have sapphire glass on an older watch and it is the only thing on the watch that is not scratched -- the case and band are plenty banged up but the glass is spotless after years of abuse -- like wrenching on cars kind of abuse.…
  • Back at it. 50 minutes and about a mile. Crowded, but I'm looking forward to the end of summer so I can have my pool back
  • According to the spec sheet for the HR, you should be able to track speed and laps. You'd need to know the length of your pool. I don't think it will do much for open water swimming. DC Rainmaker has a very in-depth review that shows how it works.
  • These stories are awesome. Thank you all for sharing. Mine is slightly alike....My coworker signed me up for the PreDiabetes class even though I didn't know it existed. My colleague is blind but he figured out from hanging on to me during basic moves through work that I was not only tall but exceptionally well padded. I'll…
  • No, I did not swim. I walked 5+ miles in a homeward direction as an alternate activity. The pool is closed for maintenance until next Sunday. So I hit the bricks (actually a very nice trail) with a brisk stroll and a favorite podcast. Very much looking forward to getting back in the tank next week!
  • Impressive time drops, Emma. Wow! Yesterday was the first time I've combined bike commuting (10 miles each way) with an evening swim. Felt great but definitely slower in the water.
  • I asked my wife and our best friends last night: What's the worst relationship hit? To pay for sex or to have an affair? It was lighthearted at the time but I also didn't get an answer. This should be a gender-neutral question but maybe it isn't...
  • Great work, Emma!
  • Brought a friend who has M.S. with me for lap swim. He had a great time. I forgot my swim watch and figure I did a mile or so. Felt great to get back in after 10 or so dry days.
