@joelhuebner : My brother has already shared the "beer belly fanny pack" ad to me, knowing I'd like it. He's not wrong! But, taking @BigDfromNJ 's cue, I do actually have a similar story to @springlering62 story: I have been pretty chunky at times, and one day I was wearing a T shirt all morning sitting at my desk. I stood…

Many times! It does come back and then I have to do it all over again. But I just keep coming back for more! The sucky thing about weight loss is that it just takes so long and you have to be disciplined the entire time. For a 50lb loss, you typically need to budget 50 weeks— very close to a year. That might as well be the…

And, to continue, if your goal is simply to lose weight and maintain muscle, you can do that by restricting calories and lifting weights. I don't feel like lifting weights "burns fat," exactly. It often doesn't burn significant calories over all, but it can leave me pretty hungry. "Cardio," particularly if done in the…

It happens that my brother and I frequently discuss the relative merits of dieting, weightlifting, and "cardo." He being more of a weightlifter and I being more of an outdoor enthusiast. My first observation is that using the term "cardo" to indicate any activity that drives your HR to Zone >3 pretty much indicates that…

It's amazing what happens when you restrict calories and lift weights! Ka-bang!

@springlering62 : Sorghum syrup, you say? I've never even seen it in a store or at anyone's house, but I see you can buy it on Amazon. I'll get some! For a time I was using agave syrup in my tea, but I got tired of the incredible sweetness. It is mostly fructose, higher in fructose than high-fructose corn syrup. Nothing…

I got the flu and Covid vaccines on Friday afternoon. I had an unusually bad response (for me), basically feeling like a 24h flu. Prior vax's have had mild effects. Bummer, as it was a beautiful weekend! PS Opinions about vaccinations seem to be black and white falling on party lines. They shouldn't be! Flu and Covid are…

I probably wouldn't like Popeyes these days— I'm just to sensitive to sodium. A Popeye's fried breast has ~1000mg of sodium, which is not at all surprising.

Woah, @springlering62 is making me hungry! It sounds like you're mentally preparing for Thanksgiving. Well, it's never too early! My wife and I predominantly eat chicken, ground and deli turkey, salmon, cod, and swordfish. If we're having beef, it's either thin-sliced stir-fry beef with lots of vegetables (which a go-to…

Boredom is a gift. It drives us to do something interesting. Embrace the boredom!

Welcome! Hopefully, you want to lose weight, not height!

@DiscusTank5 : Very impressive! Don't you think it makes it harder, though? Controlling your eating doesn't come naturally. We evolved to eat extra when possible, and for many of us lucky people, it's possible to eat extra almost all the time. It requires an rational override to curtail eating, and our rationality is…

Assam tea with 1% milk and honey. Lunch was at 11:40.

Best healing wishes! I went through bad sciatica in the Fall 2024, gaining a few pounds. It comes with the territory! I then worked hard to lose it and more in the first half of 2025. I also used this as an opportunity to improve my physical health. My advice is to 1) take your time to heal. While I don't advise throwing…

My 91y mother and her 91y roommate got COVID in September 2024. Both had been recently vaccinated and both were recommended against taking Paxlovid by their perspective doctors. Please don't take that as medical advice, it's just what happened to them! I'm getting the COVID vaccine on Friday. I got COVID last year. It…

@Dianedoessmiles1 : Yes, most fast food contains unacceptable levels of sodium and other less-desirable ingredients, including preservatives. We are free to choose alternative foods, even in an airport. I will steer clear of Chick-fil-A in the future, for sure. I really didn't enjoy it, so it won't be hard. A "Big Mac" is…

I guess the answer with Orangetheory is to take them up on a free class! There are a couple of other trainers and gyms locally. I called one that said the individual sessions were $200 each. But, the trainer has some certification that allows you to pay from your high-deductible pool, which I don't use. So, that was a big…

@AnnPT77 : That's really interesting. I see on the website that they have three different workouts, one intended for strength. Since I swim, run, and ride, what I'd be looking to focus on would be strength, cutting back on the other stuff for a while. I think group fitness classes would be the most fun, so long as they're…

I agree with @BigDfromNJ and @AnnPT77 : Something about the cooler weather makes me want to EAT. I anticipate that I'll get a bit blue in October as the days really get short. I need to find an activity to pull me through so I don't wait until Jan 1 to "reclaim my health." I've done that for too many years in a row! I'm…

@SummerSkier : Best of luck with your COVID and knee problem. I've had COVID in the past 12 months as well AND sciatica. It left me with slight anemia for months as well as lingering breathing problems (asthma). It's taken months, but both problems have slowly gotten better! Finding the "right" PT is worth gold. The person…

Vacations are so challenging to me! I've had quite a lot of fried food, ice cream. and beer these past two weeks. It was fantastic! I can report that, when I got home, it took a couple of days to shed the water weight pounds that come with salt and alcohol, but as of today, I'm back at my goal weight! So, that's 3.5 months…

@AnnPT77 : Fantastic and fun sport! I've tried it once.

Back from a week of vacation (last gasp of beach weather). Way fun! Ate way too much (including ice cream) and imbibed a bit. Still had great jogs, swims, and paddles. Came home and had an epic bike ride, setting my best times of the season on every segment. As usual, I come home and my weight has bumped up a couple of…

No shame necessary! Your body has done exactly what it evolved to do: store up extra energy in the event of scarcity. Our ancestors did that every year. We are so incredibly blessed that we have accesses to affordable food all the time— even in the dead of winter. Our programming is just a bit off for modern living, and we…

Calorie counting (food logging), of course.

That's rather a punt on MFPs part. I assume it's 1000mg per day. (Making each 1% = 10mg. You are reminding me that I need to add calcium to my daily vitamins. It's pretty darned simple to take a couple of tums at bedtime. I've heard that it's good to add a little magnesium citrate to promote digestion. Due to the…

We had one and I did it! We used to do the dirt easiest recipe: a half gallon of half-and-half plus chocolate syrup. The kids would roll it around the back yard for a while and then we'd eat it. It wasn't practical, but it was fun!

@springlering62: Well, pumpkin ice cream can be incredibly good. Why not sweet potato?

Lot's of good discussion above. My answer to the OP's question is: "Yes, but why?" Exercise is such a totally broad word that it can mean anything that is not lying on the couch. Are you saying you want to lose weight while lying on a couch all day? Why?
