As for keeping your motivation to go to the gym - I have found that if you take classes, the dynamic is more fun. I would def recommend classes as it keeps me going and many times other people will inquire why you haven't been around...which def keeps me accountable.

Mine says 1200 as well! Having some trouble adjusting to it after a 3 month hiatus from working out and watching what I eat, but it seems doable! Also MFP tells you that you should eat back calories that you burn working out (though I really am not sure how I feel about that).
