I agree lift heavy weights. For starters, you will not bulk like a man. It just won't happen! However, when you lose a significant amount of weight (more that 20 lbs) it seems that you need to add definition to your muscles so that you look good naked. I know from past experiences that only reducing my weight with dieting…

The foam rolling is good, but using a baseball or softball to rub the sore spots is good too. It feels a bit painful, but it will help the muscles to release the tension. Also drink more water as it can help flush any toxin like build up. Another weird trick is to take your shoes off and focus on raising just your toes…

I think 40/30/30 is a good balance. However, I wish to be clear carbs are not the enemy. Plenty of good nutritious foods have carbs. Fruits and veggies all have carbs. However, if you are trying to make life long changes you may need to seriously evaluate if the foods you eat are providing you good nutrition. Additionally,…

I think the problem with skipping breakfast is that you have been sleeping all night. Basically your stomach has been fasting for like 8 hours. Your body needs that wake up call that food provides. I don't think that it will add fat thought, but it very well may slow your metabolism. A lot of science agrees that smaller…

I found that you can actually eat a ton more food if they are "high in nutrition" verses ones that are not. However, it is possible to lose weight either way though as long as you stay to your calorie goals. I personally have come to realize that some foods are just too tempting for me to buy and store in my home. Things…

Spinach, okra, sun dried tomatoes, garlic and kale all have some calcium in them. I just mention them because they are all low calorie and fairly good at providing calcium.

No, the old you was a slacker. That is what you need to set your mind to accept and embrace the good changes. I personally set small attainable goals, which just mentally give me that great accomplished feel. For example, I have been buying and trying more fruits and veggies every week. The old me only liked certain stuff…

Hair loss may not exactly be due to nutrition issues. Some other issues, such as thyroid disorders, have been known to cause this too. Have you been to the doctor lately for a physical. If you mention the hair loss and being overweight I would think that they would order basic blood work to check your thyroid. Have you had…

Binge drinking is not a good way to overcome this struggle. You have outlined that yourself in your post. However, you have noticed that changing your outside didn't change how you feel inside. Congratulations on identifying the underlying issue, which is that you lack confidence. I suggest that you watch the following TED…

I think any good that can come out of personal struggle is great. I am sure that getting the feelings out one way or another will help you to feel stronger. Just a thought! =)

My husband is also guilty of telling me "the right way" to do everything. We have agreed to disagree on the topic of anything exercise related. However, I do wonder why it seems that most men are "programmed" to think that they are the best at anything physical. I know that it is sexist to say that, but it repeats itself…

Taking can only help you with this struggle. It is great that you recognized this issue, and that you are trying to make the changes you need to. I know it sounds silly, but keeping a diary/journal might help you to get out your negative feelings about found. There is something therapeutic about writing it down and…

This girl killed her workout today with her trainer for like an hour! I think he may have been trying to kill me, but it felt great! I will surely sleep soundly tonight! (weighted back squats, box jumps, mountain climbers, regular squats, and what was sort of like a squat thrust using sliders)

Have you been taking measurements too? I know sometimes the scale doesn't budge, but the measurements show the progress. If not, I would start so you can better track your progress. Basic tips that might help: 1) drink more water- current science reccommends that you divide your current body weight in half and drink that…

Most people at the gym are friendly. However, there are some basic etiquette rules that you should follow: 1) Use the equipment correctly 2) put it away when your done 3) If possible wipe off the equipment (most gyms supply towels and cleaning solution) 4) Try to use normal courtesy, which will help you to make gym friends…

I am not an expert, but I find that keeping a journal of your day to day feelings helps. It will allow you to explore what your triggers are and it is therapeutic to write it down and then let it go. I know it sounds weird, but it really works. Also, you can try to see if some foods just don't work for you. I too have…

I have been seeing great improvement using the BodyBuilding.com site with Jim Stoppani's 12 week program. It works based on science and has been tested a lot. In short, he explains how it works but you have set workouts based on periodization. In short, you change up how many reps and how much you lift to force the muscles…

While lifting do you go until failure? I know this sounds odd, but what I've learned is that the last few reps should really make you struggle. If you feel like you could do more reps at the end of your sets you are not testing the muscle well enough. I recommend at first trying to add more reps with the same weight. If…

I agree that swimming is an excellent way to strengthen muscles that doesn't add stress. However, good core workouts can help you if your back is bad. In short, if your abs do more work your back isn't as stressed. On Youtube they have several modified exercises that are specifically to work your abs and not stress your…

Have you tried HIIT or Tabata style exercises. Basically it is high intensity cardio based over low times. For example: Tabata has you do 20 seconds hard work 10 seconds rest for 4 minutes. I will tell you that even a jumping jack feels like torture by the last round of this. However, the calorie burns are great and you…

vinegar, baking soda or even lemons with hot water will all remove horrible smells from just about anything.

Some studies liken sugar addiction to cocaine addiction because of the effects it has on the brain. In short, your body loves that sugar is easy to digest and gives you a little high feeling. However, I wish to be clear that the sugar in fruit isn't as much of a problem as actual sugar or any of "ose" (almost any word…

You can find plenty of body weight exercises on youtube. They are great for maintaining or building muscle to keep shape. However, the elephant in the room is getting enough protein. It is a strange but true fact that your body won't store protein like it does carbs for energy. Therefore, if it isn't replaced regularly the…

Have you tried less weight but be standing up on a bench for more distance. I find that mixing up the exercises a little forces the body to work harder than usual. In short, it makes for greater gains.

You are awesome!

Some people find that more cardio doesn't equal more weight loss for them. Have you tried reducing the cardio to like 30 minutes and adding strength training. Even at home you can do a fairly challenging workout with your own body weight. I have been struggling with weight for a while and I will share what I have learned.…

Well, obviously calories. However, I did notice that giving up soda helped. Even though I was drinking diet soda it seemed to be keeping me from reaching my goals. I think the fake sugars messed with my body. I will admit the first 2 weeks without it was hard, but now I definitely feel much better without it.

deadlift, lunges, squats, squat jacks, donkey kicks, and frogs are all great for leg toning. Youtube has tons of new ideas that can be done almost anywhere.

Tracking will help you to keep control and make better choices in the long run. Try to get more protein from things like meat, fish, eggs, cheese, beans, yogurt, nuts, and seeds to help you succeed with your goals. I too love the idea of little gifts to myself that are not food related. I splurge on new makeup or new…
